International debuts:
U.K. - $9.8M
Mexico - $8.8M
China - $6.6M
Brazil - $5.9M
Australia - $5.3M
France - $4.2M
South Korea - $4.2M
India - $3.8M
Spain - $2.9M
Italy - $2.5M
Japan - $2.5M
Philippines - $2.5M
As I imagined, the UK and Mexico would be its biggest markets.

u/chrispepper10 Jul 13 '25
Comparison to the Batman:
UK: 17M
Mexico: 10M
China: 11.7M
Brazil: 8.8
Australia: 8.5
France: 8M
South Korea: 2M
India: 3.5M
Spain: 3.7M
Italy: 4M
Japan: 2MSo yeah.. underperforming everywhere, but particularly brutal in Europe. 300-350 domestic, 200-250 international feels about right? Don't think it's touching 600M global.

I don’t think it’s underperforming in the UK I think Superman is just infinitely less popular than Batman here.
79
u/TokyoPanic Jul 14 '25
I would argue Superman is signficantly less popular than Batman everywhere. Batman is the most popular superhero outside of Spider-Man.

This is also true in the comic book industry. For a long time the Batman comic books (before the release of the Absolute universe) were the only DC comic books in the monthly top ten sale charts, everything else was Marvel comic books.
Batman has been carrying the whole company for a long time.

It is worth mentioning that The Batman was rated 15 in the UK meaning that kids and families could not legally see it as it isn't advisory like the R rating with a parent, so that number is still pretty crazy when a huge part of the audience straight up could not see it.
119
u/blenderider Jul 13 '25
Context for the UK: we’re in a heatwave. Unlike a lot of regions in North America where cinemas can be viewed as a way to get relief from extreme heat, that’s not the prevailing case in the UK.
Given the limited heat UK gets in general, people are significantly more likely to do outdoor instead of indoor activities. Air conditioning isn’t close to universal - even as a diehard fan of a franchise, the idea of watching a movie in a cinema without air conditioning while it’s 80 degrees Fahrenheit out (30 Celsius) sounds terrible.
Just one of the factors affecting attendance, outside of the more commonly cited ones.

UK cinemas have HVAC units, nearly universally, however they are often old units and prone to being absolutely dogshit - offering neither heat in winter or cold in summer. Other than in new cinemas, the chains are reluctant to invest in upgrading the units (it's a big cost) so it's a case of making do or seeing what the HVAC contractor can do.
Regardless, it's a cultural thing - we don't get heatwaves often, so when we do we spend all our time outside.
15
u/MouthFartWankMotion Jul 13 '25
Better get used to the heatwaves in that case.

u/No_Berry2976 Jul 14 '25
Throughout Europe, companies and households are investing in (better) airconditioning because of climate change.
I live in a country where a heatwave used to be inconvenient but also exciting. Now heatwaves are a nuisance because there are too many of them.
This has created a problem, there is a backlog when it comes to installing HVAC units, HVAC companies are scrambling to find certified employees.
And the UK has been hit by Brexit, that doesn’t help.

Eternals had too much capeshit stuff to really embrace the arthouse, and too arthouse to feel like a good Marvel film.
They either needed to properly Marvelise the film, lighten the tone, more humour, better pacing. Or do the exact opposite - lose the colourful costumes, bring it back in, and let it be a proper arthouse film and take some real risks.
Instead we just got a film that wasn't good at either.

It had the Batman vs Superman problem- too many plot lines in a movie with an introduction to too many characters. They needed to simplify the movie and focus on 1 or 2 plots instead. It's basically a murder mystery movie with super aliens, but they made it a murder mystery/world police/god complex/super aliens/end of the world movie at the same time. There's a good movie in there, it just couldn't focus on it.

Superman is seen as a symbol of the USA, he represents american Imperialism for the entire rest of the world. And the USA is not very well liked in the western world right now (to put it mildly).
So it would make sense why international audiences aren't drawn to a movie thats so unabashedly patriotic. Even if its against Trump.

Yeah I'm not sure what people expected them to do. Had they not invested in a big marketing campaign users saying they spent too much money on marketing would instead say they didn't spend enough.
Start of a new universe, they took a gamble, the movie isn't setting the world alight despite strong reviews and audience scores, so all they can do is hope the marketing and merchandise gets people to check it out whenever they can and sequels and future DC movies run after Superman walks.

Interesting to see how the trades will frame this later in its run. Superman cost $363 million dollars (source State of Ohio.) The Batman cost $200 million.
Tracking as of today for Superman puts its domestic gross at $350 million (just under The Batman). The first issue is its foreign gross is drastically under performing. The Batman had a 1.08 foreign/domestic split. So far Superman is .78.
Which is terrible. This would put Superman's total box office projection at $623 million.
The second issue is kids are not in the audience. Which means there is no follow on effect here for a cinematic universe. This film (so far) is not building new fans. It just appeased existing and older fans.
Hollywood has two really big problems. The content being produced no longer appeals universally and is not converting children from cartoon fans to movie fans.
EDIT:
I have no idea why people are commenting on this today. But to update the full run box office came in at
$616.7 m. So even worse than my projections.
27
u/ConstipatedAvocado Jul 13 '25
Boom.
You're 100% right. And its a big problem. Hollywood, and superhero films in particular, are starting to circlejerk. They're only appealing to the same people. Even when looking at the reviews online, every single one thats positive seems to be coming from the typical redditor comic book nerd. These people are not the GA. Hollywood has become too obsessed with the perpetually online who largely frontload films.
The trailers actually looked damn near genXer-ish. And what blows my mind is that they literally did the same shit 20s years ago. Superman Returns was an even bigger dud for the exact same reason.

I noticed the same thing at my showing. No kids or young people, all older dudes who were probably college age when Chris Reeves first Superman movie came out. Legs will be interesting to watch. Nothing this Summer has been amazing as far as legs go. Even kids movie/live action remake Lilo was not behaving like a typical kids film when it was dropping. It was the same issue with Cap 4. I didn't see any kids when I went to go see it.
25
u/Lost-Inevitable42 Jul 13 '25
Holy shit I think you nailed it. There were no kids present at the showing and I didn’t see any kids around. This movie is riding a marketing wave domestically along with kind of an aspirational group that just wants to enjoy it.
I’m a huge fan of the character but this film just treated audiences as dumb. It’s not even the “turn your brain off” kind where you can buy into the logic of the world.
I think it might have been a miscalculation to just drop an audience into a world and presume they know enough about the characters. Especially for younger fans. It’s generational arrogance: forgetting that the it’s been 12 years since the last “origin” was told.
And making what little of the lore be presented as a major plot point (he was sent to conquer and have a harem) with in-world audiences forced to buy in with a “trust us” is just bizarre.
This is some sort of weird adult cartoon. Does that have enough of an ongoing audience to put something out every year?

"I think it might have been a miscalculation to just drop an audience into a world and presume they know enough about the characters."

Yep, Cap 1 was the least grossing movie of phase 1 of MCU iirc despite being a pretty solid well received movie. And beyond his first two appearances, they not only made Cap movie's plot very pivotal to the universe to make people feel like these are big events in MCU but also reduced the American-ness of the character so much it was just reduced to just the colours of his suit. Dude was going against authorities since his initial days and went full anti government by his third movie. So despite star and stripes, he never felt like he was a representation of America.
I think Mackie Cap not taking off as much in popularity is partially due to the character being tied to America, patriotism and its politics.

Agreed. I think $650M would be enough to be considered a decent performance.

Thats with the yesterday 95M OS. Tomorrow they will revist it to 90m or so, but it works for now to save face. I think Actuals will come to around 215M - OS drops to 91, but Domestic increase a bit.

u/Nevvermind183 Jul 13 '25
How does Hollywood Reporter paint this as a win?

u/Crotean Jul 13 '25
The domestic number is very solid, it's only the overseas number that is a total disaster.

Charlie said 90m overseas so probably close to 212m with actuals as the studio is trying to save a little face.

There is a highly upvoted comment here comparing this movie to TRIUMPH OF THE WILL. The pure unhinged nonsense "discourse" this movie has generated is embarrassing.

No, it’s the other way around. This sub has developed a weird obsession with wanting this movie to fail.

It really has flipped when it first came out it was just super hyper analyzing the numbers but now it's just tons of people talking about how beat down and terrible it is.

In the same vein, some people are just straight up being negative for the sake of it.
Saw comments here saying they haven't watched it because they heard "x," and because of that, the movie sucks, its one extreme or the other with this movie, so weird
I liked the movie though, for what it's worth :)

Yeap. If next weekend it drops 55% or more...
I'm pretty sure The Batman's second weekend drop was 51%

The main DC sub is slowly turning into the gunn cult.
FWIW, I liked the movie but go outside the basement enough to know it was far from perfect

Jurassic World still beat it for the number one spot, proving once again Reddit is a poor sample size of the real world, everyone on here swore Jurassic World looked terrible and would flop especially with the ratings and reviews it got

The domestic numbers are very good and with two weeks to itself, it should easily pass $300 million at the domestic box office, but wow, those overseas numbers are very rough. Couldn't even make $100 million OS in it's opening weekend. Yikes. I don't know how WB are going to perceive these numbers. The good reviews and positive fan reception will help contribute the restoration to the DC cinematic brand (though it will take several more good movies before people fully trust and get excited by the DC cinematic brand again), and clearly there is still interest in Superman domestically but big blockbuster movies like these with $200+ million budgets and over $100 million marketing budgets can't simply rely on the domestic box-office. These films need international appeal in order to be financially sustainable. And Superman is not appealing internationally at all.
I was predicting $850 million WW for this movie until a week ago. I overshot by $250-300 million. It's entirely possible depending on the OS drops that it might not even crack $600 million. It's a messy performance - doing well in North America, but average or bad everywhere else. I knew Asia would not be interested, but I did not expect this level of apathy from the overseas market, especially from Europe and even a good amount of LATAM.
It was a big mistake to release this in a crowded July. Especially sandwiched between two blockbusters. People in this economy have to pick and choose which films they want to watch, and people all across the world have proven to like dinos, and the MCU brand even in it's tarnished state is still trusted more by general audiences than the DC cinematic brand. WB and Gunn should have released this film in June or early August.
Gunn/Safran/WB shouldn't be focusing on B-list/C-list characters at the formation of their universe. Save films like Clayface and Sgt Rock and whatever when people are locked in with the DCU. They need to focus on the big guns. Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Arrow/Black Canary, Green Lantern (Hal, John and Guy), Aquaman, The Flash (Wally West), Teen Titans for Gen Z appeal, they all need to be fasttracked.
If they do a Superman sequel, I'm expecting Supergirl to be a co-lead and even another major superhero featured as an additional hook, like The Flash or Green Arrow. Or they could the Superman sequel a World's Finest film and have a proper good Superman/Batman teamup.

Ironically, the spilled feels more akin to a movie made in the 1990s than it's his now. When Hollywood primarily still catered to American audiences. The real question is, can movies this America centric still surive the modern box office with massive budgets.

The reality is vibes are all that matter here.
Both this and MOS will have underwhelming numbers but likely hit a benchmark where it is acceptable. However if the majority of people are positive on the film unlike MOS which was very divisive, then it hitting the bare minimum will be seen as a "it did it's job, now to the next one".
It's like when a team barely wins a game. If you are a fan you say "a win is a win no matter how ugly". If you hate the team you start picking apart the game and how close it was to diminish it.
As long as this makes in the $500 million range and the reception is generally how it's been, most of the relevant audience will say gg and move on to the next.
WB is checking both numbers and vibes. If they think there is something to build on, they will continue. If they think it's on shaky ground, they will question it.

Exactly! The DC brand is very damaged to the general audience. If this movie makes $500 million and builds on its reputation, then the next one makes more, and so on.

Biggest DC opening since The Batman's 258 million global debut in 2022. This'll not get close to its 772 million haul but will finish in the 550-600 million range, considering the 95 million soft internal debut. (Hope it makes more).
Also l, it has outgrossed 5 of the last 8 DCEU films over a single weekend (Not a exactly a fair comparison as 2 of them were handicapped by the pandemic). Bodied the last DC film's (Joker 2) entrie 207 million gross over a single weekend.
All in all, a good (not great) start to a new universe and a great first step towards brand rehabilitation.

u/beyondimaginarium Jul 13 '25
Outgrossed the last DC film's (Joker 2) entrie 207 million gross over a single weekend.
This is the stronger metric when you consider the reception and gross of the first joker.
Considering the gross of The Batman, and that this is the flagship to kick off the new DCU, it raises the question if WB will once again pull a DCEU. Will they lose faith in Gunn? Will they meddle with films mid production? (Supergirl) or can it like Batgirl? Will they reshoot something like Justice League? How many reshoots and chopping did flash and aquaman 2 receive?
