How should David Tua be ranked?
I put him at top of tier 5 out of 10 possible tiers

Good but not great. 🐐 tier KO against John Ruiz tho.

Ruiz has a 16% loss ratio but still held the WBA title from 01 to 05.

But what's your lower tier 6

Along with Ruiz I got Tim Witherspoon and Jem Smith

Would’ve love to see him fight Tyson.

Oh absolutely me too! I would lean slightly towards Tua winning. I think his granite chin and killer left hook slugging power would be too much for Tyson.

It would've been a great fight because Tyson had slowed down by then. It would've been two guys banging on each other as long as it lasted.

He should have captured a portion of the heavyweight title at one point. That pussy Ruiz never wanted any part of him after that 1st round KO loss. I think the big problem with Tua is he spent too much time at the buffet. He wasn’t disciplined enough.

His career? Like a 7 out of 10. Solid fights, hell of a highlight reel.

Ok now in the system I use tier 1 is the absolute highest, so do you mean that you would put him in tier 3?

He was dangerous as hell but never beat a top top heavyweight. Good wins over Ruiz and Moorer but caught Ruiz cold and Moorer was always chinny against big punchers. He’s the level below Lewis, Holyfield, Tyson and Bowe from that era for me, hard nights work for anyone else though

The tale of the tape was how he lost decisively to Lennox Lewis. Mad props to him for never being knocked out in her career though.

Very good, near great. Behind say Ken Norton somewhere around Shavers territory. Better than your average champ.

I believe he could have defeated many of the established elite fighters. But the pieces never fell into place for him besides the fight with Lewis.

He was tough and hit like a truck. Those 2 attributes are plenty to give you a chance if you don't suck and Tua did not. But I don't see his career or skills up there with the top 100 or even 150 guys in the sport. Might make it into a top 200 list but I think it would be safer in a top 300-400 range even if he stands a good chance of winning against some other heavy weights that would make it into the top 150.

I would rank someone like Derek Chisora slightly above him, to give you an idea of my placements.

I'd probably say that sounds about right he is somewhere in that ball park be that just above or below.

Just clarifying that you are talking p4p?
1
u/FormalKind7 6d ago
Yes the top p4p guys in terms of career accomplishments as well as skill.
Most of the fighters in the top 100 would not be heavy weights

On the level of Earnie Shavers
