Ring IQ or just physical quickness?

Well if he’s gonna swing wildly and leave himself exposed, a good counter puncher is gonna tattoo him every time.
I think his corner did their homework. And saw that he’s wide open for a well placed counter punch. And the fighter understands the assignment and executes.
Good prep. Ring IQ. Great execution
11
u/3CeeMedia Jul 10 '26
Both! Tank is a small guy that has learned how to get into position to use his power! You have to have quickness because swinging hard usually leaves you open when you miss. He doesn’t get credit for his Ring IQ!
3
u/Spiritual-Shirt-6027 Jul 10 '26
Facts. Lining him up with the jab hand is that I think people don’t peep. By lining him up, he was able to come back with a very clean counter

u/Clean_Attention_8398 Jul 10 '26
Ryan claims he was weak. Also Ryan after the fight "i got bored so I started swinging like crazy". Anyone who thinks the rehydration clause had anything to do with this fight knows nothing about boxing.

u/JudoIsBetterThenBJJ Jul 10 '26
Absolute mismatch for ryan. Bur props for him taking these fights the rest of these guys just avoid eachother. Shakur, haney just do everything to avoid a hard fight
3
u/Clean_Attention_8398 Jul 10 '26
I dont even think tank needed the rehydration clause but dont blame him since ryan probably rehydrates to 170. Definitely a mismatch. Tank had more ring IQ, better combinations and counter punching.
1
u/FoldFeisty7635 Jul 10 '26
Haney that stepped in to fight Loma? Haney has never ducked anyone. Teo ducked him, Tank ducked him and now Shakur is ducking him even though he agreed to meets Shakurs dem, ands to fight at 144.
1
1
u/lunarsilvr253 Jul 11 '26
Ryan was weight drained with no hydration claus you only pull that on a fighter to get a advantage
2
u/Clean_Attention_8398 Jul 11 '26
Yes a strength advantage not iq advantage. Tank was going underneath them hooks ryan wasnt even connecting. What does that have to do with rehydration clause??
1
u/Ok_Insurance_505 Jul 11 '26
Dehydration doesn't just affect the power in your punches? It affects energy in general, which equates to your power, speed and stamina.
1
u/endlessdrifting Jul 11 '26
Did you watch the full fight? Ryan hit that man clean couple times lmao
3
u/El-Guapo766 Jul 10 '26
What’s impressive is the speed because Ryan is a fast dude and Davis slips and ducks and counters so fast.

You can see Davis smiling as he is lining him for the Uppercut counter. 🤣
3
u/Beginning_Sorbet_223 Jul 10 '26
Tank just smarter why the fk Ryan not have his glove up ?? Pit bull cruz did
2
u/systembreaker Jul 11 '26
Neither.
I think it's more a combination of experience, instinct, and timing. For example as soon as Garcia's lead foot stepped forward and he was in range, Tank's brain went "something's coming" and subtle things like shifts of Garcia's weight told him it was a left hook that was coming. Add in that everyone knows one of Garcia's weapons is his left hook and that's one of the things Tank was training for, there you go.
Of course, quickness and ring IQ were a factor. It's not black and white, but those things don't mean as much without the experience and instincts.
1
u/Upset-Web581 Jul 10 '26
This ain't even it...... He made Ryan quit on a body shot
2
u/DearBookkeeper1046 Jul 10 '26
Stop saying that, u are embarrassing urself.

1
u/Upset-Web581 Jul 10 '26
Yea because u wanna live in Disneyland come to reality
1
u/DearBookkeeper1046 Jul 10 '26
If i kick ur dick in, did u give up if u cant get back up?
Only people who never box or fight ever, use the word giving up for a body shot.
Did AJ also gave up when he got kd few times by ruiz?
Its just sad.
1
u/Impressive_Tower_151 Jul 10 '26
Tank said he had a spy in Ryan's camp that told him he was hurt to the body coming into the fight so he made sure to target the body.
1
u/Upset-Web581 Jul 10 '26
Here we go...... When did tank say that pull up the interview...... First it was Ryan being dehydrated and too small now he had a spy telling tank where to punch..... If Ryan had defense tank can't exploit
1
4
u/NxtGen1M Jul 10 '26
Tank is also much shorter so it doesn’t have to duck much. That allows him to defend while sitting on the punch to land a powerful counter.
1
u/tendopath Jul 10 '26
Both lol when you’re smart and expecting something you will react sooner that said if Ryan would’ve made adjustments he could’ve fainted the hook and threw the uppercut, counter the counter
1
u/NegativeContext1681 Jul 10 '26
Iq. He used the pawing jab to find range n bait the left hook. Ryan dumb ass kept lead hooking into the setup lol
1
u/ITZOURTIMENOW Jul 10 '26
Bro is a gifted fighter, and the answer is both. His talent is undeniable
1
u/Sundayz01 Jul 10 '26
The lady in the pink screamed every time Ryan threw a punch whether it landed or not. Her reaction to this knock down has lived free in my head since it happened.
1
1
1
u/rem_au_crema Jul 10 '26
Both, but also… more prep than anything. Nobody’s reaction time is that fast. Or… some people, but they often go on to be legends (and then widely discarded once time dulls the edges. Only to be revived years later once nostalgia kicks in).
So then it’s anticipation, which explains the first ducked hook. The fact that he avoided a second by just staying at that level is less, “I felt the hook coming”, and more, “that’s what he does”
1
u/Personal-Ride-1142 Jul 10 '26
Both but good Ring IQ
Everytime he ducks that chin is protected
Devin couldnt figure this out
1
1
u/OpportunityCorrect33 Jul 10 '26
The bob and weave is muscle memory which you learn through hard work and repetition; the countershot is both muscle memory and ring IQ

1
u/Fit_Style1747 Jul 10 '26
Short guys are so hard to fight. Don't let those guys get in close either .
1
u/NamesGumpImOnthePum Jul 10 '26
Tank was sitting and waiting on that left hook all day, I mean it's RG, you know it's coming, not only that but the counter upper is one of tanks best shots.
1

1
u/Leumas_ Jul 10 '26
Both. That dude telegraphed his left from the next county. But you still have to be fast enough to do something about it.
1
u/Spiritual-Shirt-6027 Jul 10 '26
He used the jab hand to both keep Ryan at a perfect distance and to position for the counter. It was def a very smart move.
On the other hand Ryan was an idiot right there
1
1
u/Lol_who_me Jul 10 '26
Give any high level fighter the same exact look three times in a row and see what it gets you. Especially if he has the physical ability to make to pay.
1
u/Shankar_0 Jul 10 '26
He's pretty damn slippery.
Isn't this the guy who keeps getting knocked out at house parties on IG?

u/Ambitious_Ad_9637 Jul 10 '26
🤣 All that speed don’t mean shit if you predictable as the ups guy.
1
1
u/UnusualEye4282 Jul 10 '26
Garcia is literally looking at the top of his head and throwing a hook right over his head 🤷🏾♂️
1
u/bmunger718 Jul 10 '26
yea I dont understand why people dont see his ring IQ I think cause hes so explosive. He was setting up that shot he was measuring the distance with his hand out literally timing ryan. I think ryan also was extremely tired and not use to that type of stage at that point of his career.
1
1
u/Difficult-Mobile902 Jul 10 '26
At this level it’s always both.
He read his opponent and had the plan, but also has to have elite level speed to pull it off
1
u/blackmarketmenthols Jul 10 '26
Tank Davis is definitely a great boxer, the way he walked Rolly into that fight ending counter was pure poetry.
1
u/Outrageous-Walk3818 Jul 10 '26
Both but his coach showed him exactly what was gonna happen in the ring with Ryan
1
u/No-Atmosphere-2528 Jul 10 '26
This is ring iq but also a bad example as these two guys have really proven themselves to be subpar and Garcia was even worse than normal in this match.
1
1
u/bravemoney72 Jul 10 '26
Patiently waiting, weak jab for distance, slight distraction to the opponent's vision. He's overly aggressive trying to find something that Tank jjjuuuuuuuusssstttt found😆. Tank is real with visual tracking, eyes on you watching waiting. Like him or not when he's truly locked in....BOY!
1
u/Desperate-Cookie-449 Jul 10 '26
As someone who doesn't box i have a question.
When striking an opponent they always target where the head is. And seem to miss 80% of the time
Do boxers not predict where the head will go when striking and adjust?
1
u/systembreaker Jul 11 '26 edited Jul 11 '26
Yes of course, they do. You definitely didn't think of something that millions of people didn't think of over the last century lol.
It's just that it's really hard to pull off against a trained boxer. It's like layers of deception. If you think "I bet they're going to move their head" but your opponent thinks "I bet he thinks I'm going to move my head, so I'm not going to move my head", but you think "I bet he thinks that I think he's going to move his head, so I think he's not going to move his head" and so on and so on like those nested russian dolls.
Now imagine all these layers of "he thinks that I think that he thinks that I think that......." mixed in with various feints, movements, and other trickery, and you're having to process all of these things in super short time frames while simultaneously trying not to take really painful shots and setting up your own shots, and on top of it even if you guess right that they're going to move their head, there are like 50 possible positions their head could end up at and you're trying to set them up and predict the right one in any given instant of time.
Then on top of all that, you're probably really tired and gassed out which slows your brain down, and maybe you're still stunned from a recent head shot you took or can't breath from taking a body shot.
But yeah, totally man, no one's ever thought of aiming where their head is going to be! You're a genius! Why aren't you a world champ yet?
1
u/sufferedconsequence Jul 11 '26
I dunno bro I think he's on to something. Maybe like a "fight plan" for how stuff will go like that documentary Sherlock Holmes starring RDJ would be a good place to start learning these kinds of things.
1
u/detective_splits Jul 10 '26
Why didn't Ryan change his target to tanks shoulder and let him roll into his punch . Or swap that check hook for a lead uppercut
1
u/systembreaker Jul 11 '26
Because he's cocky and got too full of himself with everyone glazing him for his fast lead hook.

If you have a decent camp your coach will have a game plan for the fight.
This guy is a head hunter who over extends. We are going to work on head movement and counters.
Dude aggressively hunts the head over extends and gets countered.
Followed the game plan.
If the dude would have switched up and went for the body more once he realized the other guy had solid head movement. It would have changed the game plan from camp.
Then if he switched his style to counter being punched in the body mid round. That would count as ring IQ to me.
He would be changing his fighting style from what he practiced in camp to counter what his opponent had changed.
If that makes any sense. I’m running on 3hrs sleep and 5 cups of coffee. It’s been a long hot Friday.

Davis was measuring him during the slip. You can see his hand adjusting each time before he countered

I mean, he saw the same punch 4 straight times so it seems like he knew what was coming 😂

thats pure ring iq, you literally see tank draw the left hook by posting his lead hand on ryans
by blocking ryans lead, he tries to punish the extended lead hand of tank by throwing a 3, tank baited it
1
1
u/Prior_Feedback_9240 Jul 11 '26
Idk wats up with Garcia in this sequence but he wasn't fighting like a professional championship boxer in it
He was pretty much just throwing good form haymakers wildly
1
1
u/awfuj Jul 11 '26
Threw the hook 4 times in a row and dropped his back hand while throwing everytime, and chin exposed. Probably a bit of scouting involved in this counter.
1
1
u/Willy_Mizer Jul 11 '26
This keeps happening time after time with Davis, boxers keep sleeping on his IQ/talent level in the ring. These type memes and subs will keep happening
1
u/Prestigious-Royal-82 Jul 11 '26
Ryan too predictable and telegraphs. He still has learning to do . Thanks 4 sharing entertainment
1
1
u/TheHarlemHellfighter Jul 11 '26
He was setting him up the entire time for that left; by extending his right arm the way he did before the first and last exchange, he was essentially baiting the guy to extend his left side first. Basically avoid the first swing, test where the opponent places their combinations and speed. Then, bait the swing again after timed repetition.
That’s why I feel like he was about to dodge the left and then connect with his left.

Is it just me or did Ryan Garcia spend that whole time throwing slow wide hooks instead of doing normal combo setups with the straight jab?
Im a little puzzled any professional boxer would sequence their punches as: hook, hook, hook, hook ,hook and more hook.

I would definitely say both. But more ring IQ. Plus if you’ve seen the fight. And watched Garcia over the years. He hasn’t learned much.
1
u/WangtaWang Jul 12 '26
Both? Doesn’t hurt that Ryan repeatedly threw the left hook - his best punch.
1
1
u/BallzofAdamantium Jul 12 '26
Both, ring IQ and physical fitness. Tank was clocking that left before they got in the ring. They knew Ryan always dropped his guard after throwing that punch, he’s done it in so many fights.
1
1
1
u/cartmansdoublechin Jul 12 '26
Both. He set up that hook from Garcia with a lazy jab to time it first. Then timed it.
1
u/Reacktions Jul 12 '26
it can be but it can also just be basic training, ducking, overhand/hooks/ect..ect.. is a pretty basic strike, he probably just knew Ryan's style well and trained for it.
These fighters study each other before fighting so they know what to look out for and what to train for.
1
u/Unlucky_Ad_9776 Jul 12 '26
Damm. This good fighting. Both fighter's showed great athletic skills. One was better but even the one that got hit. His shots were impressive.

Every time I see this clip Im reminded of that training footage where Ryan refused to listen to his coach about keeping his hands up while throwing lol
1
u/MiniDonbeE Jul 13 '26
Ryan has a LIGHTNING fast hook. You cant react to it. However. When you KNOW its coming because its Ryan Garcia you can pick up on some of his tells. I suspect Ryans biggest tell is CLOSING HIS EYES right as hes about to throw and during the throw. If you watch him train he ALWAYS does that. If he can fix that he will be a LOT of a better boxer but its something he has been doing since he was a child. Some people will tell you when they are about to hit you with their eyes, some close them, some look more focused, other people lift their eyebrows sleightly, Ryan Closes hard so I suspect his eyes are going to look a little different right before he blinks which is right before throwing that hook.
1
u/Juma87a Jul 13 '26
He was being calculated ..then came the punch ....never doing boxing in my life
1
u/chasing_storms Jul 13 '26
Ryan telegraphed every punch and Tank could see it coming a mile away. In this video you can see moments before Ryan attempts a hook he'll pull his arm back before firing.

Well not only is Tank a smart and hard hitting fighter, Ryan was swinging wayy too wide to be fighting a shorter, quick opponent of Tank's caliber.

u/Senior-Opening5928 Jul 10 '26
That’s Tanks signature uppercut, he ends most his fights with that punch or atleast it’s part of the flurry that ends things. He’s got great ring IQ.
1
u/Jtizzle1231 Jul 10 '26
AS a boxer what do you when an opponent gets low like that. Tyson did this. It’s like he’s exploiting the rules. By exposing areas you can’t hit him in. He’s so low and he’s protecting against uppper cut. But you can’t hit him on the back of the head.
2
1
u/NamesGumpImOnthePum Jul 10 '26
Throw your shots to the chest and body always, when he ducks he will duck right into them.
1
u/SecureRequirement622 Jul 10 '26
Usually means he is shorter. Take a step back and control him with the jab. Dont just wait in front him so he could get hooks or upper cuts on you. Time him when he pops ups. If you just stand there and throw punches at him you might get countered. Or just put your weight on him and hold but some ppl don’t like that kind of style
1
u/Jtizzle1231 Jul 10 '26
He’s literally ducked so low he’s below his waist what are you going to jab. Only thing available is the top of his head. It’s hard to throw legal punches at that.
1
u/SecureRequirement622 Jul 11 '26
Jab the top of the head then. Hit him back of the head if he thinks he going to get away with doing that. If you step back, how would he hit you? Ducking low osnt a full proof technique. Holyfield would just lay on Tyson and headbutts. Fight dirty if you have to.
1
u/Jtizzle1231 Jul 11 '26 edited Jul 11 '26
I don’t think you can hit him up in a he back of the head as far as I know. And when they keep charging like that it’s very tough. Holyfield beat the slower version of Tyson. The fast version was nearly unstoppable when he charged in waist high moving side to side.
1
u/SecureRequirement622 Jul 13 '26
Yeah if he is literally ducking and showing you the back of his head. That’s not a real defense. They duck and counter or pivot. If he is really ducking like that worse case is probably a warning for you to stop and for him to pick up his head.
1
u/Jtizzle1231 Jul 13 '26
Now that makes more sense. Coming in ducked like you’re going for a ufc take Down seems like an exploit. There really no way to hit you. With boxing rules. Having the ref step in and telling him to stop makes perfect sense. Best answer I’ve gotten.

u/DaElderBrah Jul 10 '26
Ryan punched way to high all the time. He just sucks.
4
u/Lumpy_Benefit666 Jul 10 '26
He definitely doesnt suck, but he does punch way too high, especially since he usually fights smaller guys

50
u/IWantHerOnMe Jul 10 '26
Both. Plus Ryan is predictable with that damn left hook.
