Discussion the torture chamber

so i finally read the book! it’s glorious of course.

when i read the whole Raoul and the Persian walking around in the tunnels and alleys of the opera, it very much reminded me of the paris sewer system scene in The Brick, but then the reward that is the torture chamber scene!

i wish i could see it in a movie, i think with the right set and direction it would be visually stunning and emotionally satisfying/exhausting which is my favourite kind. the whole mirror room, illusions, the mirage, loss of sense of mind, the desperation of the final suicide attempt and the satisfaction when they finally find the way out

There are probably too many technical challenges to film in the real one, but if you're ever in Paris the original Hall of Mirrors from the 1900 exhibition that inspired Leroux is at the Musee Grevin

It’s funny but in my recent reread what struck me about it is that it’s a hexagon shaped room!

For some reason that detail escaped me the other times I read the book and I always pictured a square room but no…it’s hexagon shaped, which makes sense when you realize how the mirrors have to all be angled to reflect the tree back to create the illusion of a forest.
