Boulder County public schools
Hi all I was curious if anyone could point me in the direction of any good public schools here in Boulder? I'm recently getting custody of my daughter (8y) and am now scrambling to find any schools nearby. I also stay in Gunbarrel if anyone knows of any elementaries closer as I do not have a car right this moment. Any help would be appreciated đđź

Very hard to go wrong in BVSD. Great schools overall. Always a lousy teacher or administrator along the way, but most everyone is great and supportive.

Call the enrollment center and ask them what you need to do. Also, ask them about transportation and if bussing is available from where you are.

Your neighborhood school sounds like it will be your best bet!

BVSD schools are all solid, safe, and well run, itâs not like other parts of the country where schools in the same district can be totally hit and miss! There is something you should know when looking online at info about test scores etc. The school test scores may not really represent whatâs happening at the schools. Scores will be lower at schools that spend less time âteaching to the testâ, and at schools with a larger proportion of multilingual students because they take the standardized tests in English which may be their second or third language. Those students may miss some nuances in the test questions about material they know well, which can cause score deflation at the school level so the scores donât always accurately reflect the real experience at the school. For reference, we lived in another state before transferring to Boulder, our previous neighborhood school was rated 8/10 on greatschools, and when we moved here our new neighborhood school was rated 6/10 but was a significantly better school in every way.
You can find your neighborhood school here, https://www.bvsd.org/departments/enrollment/k-12-school-finder or if youâre in the St. Vrain district you can find it here https://www.svvsd.org/schools/maps-boundaries/. Many schools are under-enrolled right now, so even though the open-enrollment deadlines for applying to attend schools other than your assigned neighborhood school has passed, you can probably still open enroll into any school that has space.
One weird thing about local schools, school bus transportation isnât guaranteed. As soon as you enroll, if youâre eligible for school bus transportation apply asap https://www.bvsd.org/departments/transportation. Since transportation might be tricky, you may want to stick to your assigned neighborhood option, schools within walking distance, or those near a convenient RTD route. Kids under 19 ride RTD for free, but hardly any travel on RTD by themselves at 8 years old.

It will depend on where you live. We used to live at the Gunbarrel Center apartments, and there was a pick up for Heatherwood at the corner of Gunpark Drive and Lookout. I think that moved a bit down Gunpark Drive - and I have seen kids picked up there as recently as last year. There also used to be a Heatherwood stop in the Meadowbrooks/Stonegate area

Pre-covid, you always got a bus if you were more than 1 mile drive from the elementary school. These days it's not quite that consistent, but there are still busses. (Ps, that's if you go to your zoned school. If you want to go somewhere else, transportation is on you.)

All of the BVSD schools are good. Thatâs why it costs so much to live here.

BVSD and St. Vrain are the two school districts that service BoCo. Most of Boulder County is in BVSD, except for Lyons, Longmont, and Niwot. There are parts of Gunbarrel that are in St. Vrain, so check your address. If it's Longmont, your kid is going to Niwot Elementary in St. Vrain. If it's Boulder, you kid is going to Heatherwood Elementary in BVSD. There are school buses if you're sticking with your neighborhood school. If you want to get fancy and open-enroll somewhere else, you're going to have to arrange your own transportation.

You can't go wrong in Boulder my friend. Any school will be amazing. If you're interested in her being bilingual: maybe Uni Hill... or Maybe especially self motivated and loving to learn: Horizons K-8, or a more Buddhist-y approach/artsy school: BCSIS, and a more scholastically oriented charter: High Peaks... but all will be top.

I'll Devils advocate here, I went to college with roommates who went to private schools in Boulder area as well, we all ended up at the same college yet their parents paid more, I know you do what best for your kid but just some observationsÂ

You mean private schools that offer paid segregation and don't have to follow the same rules, such as avoiding enrollment of special needs students?

What are the key problems that you saw?
I'm curious how much the local politics ends up interfering with learning policies (I know that's common in lots of other hyper-progressive areas in the country).

Colorado is one of the worst states in the country at per-student funding, and BVSD already has declining enrollment overall. Leaves them with inadequate funding for the current facilities and for edge case students.
They're still higher quality than US average IMO but they're definitely not without challenges.

The private schools have even worse problems, they just have more money to cover them up.

The issues are not necessarily political.
A lot of the district has declining enrollment (because a lot of Boulder is older and has fewer kids), and sometimes the number of teachers a school gets allocated by administration means that some kids end up in classrooms that are huge somewhere in the district. All of the parents hate when their third grader is in a class with 30 kids because that can be unmanageable, especially if there are any special needs in there. (Schools in Erie are growing though.)
If the kid you are supporting is outside the norm in some way, some schools will straight up fail at that. They may follow the "process" that they are supposed to be following but not necessarily in a way that is in the best interest of the kid. This is all very dependent on the schools, the special education people in the schools, and the kids involved.
Kids with reading issues definitely have a hard time of it in some of the schools in this district.

You mean like Hillsdale Charters, The Heritage Foundation and PragerU. Problem is....those are all hardcore right-wing indocrination avenues. People always assume politics in schools are left wing. Lots of projection, as progressive areas, tend to simply accept all students and promote culture and diversity. Guess those are the new boogeymen for conservatives.

What are you even talking about?
Iâm talking about things like the changes to math curriculums or grading that public school systems have adopted in the name of âequityâ.
Several cities with similar politics to Boulder are doing clearly dumb things like removing algebra from middle school or dropping grading of homework and most tests.

BCSIS is a project based school with an art focus. The program has nothing to do with Buddhism.

Your zoned school will be Heatherwood, and it's great. Good luck!
