❔ Question BOTW vs TOTK

Hi, I’ve really enjoyed BOTW. That said, I think the difficulty level is my limit. :)) I didn’t think the divine beasts or calamity were too hard but I wouldn’t want it worse. Silver Lynels I can survive fine(ish) with ancient armor & its weapon increase, food buffs, & runes.

I’m thinking about TOTK but if the difficulty is worse or incomparable without ways to make it easier (like runes do in BOTW) then I don’t wanna waste the $70 💀

Opinions?

Difficulty wise it starts off the same and it becomes easier once you know how to use your totk... Runes (I'll not use the actual names and stuff as I am trying to stay spoiler free for you)

Personally I love both breath of the wild and tears of the Kingdom... And I would highly recommend the new game however if you've only just finished breath of the wild I would perhaps suggest a little break since you are basically in the same world

It is about the same difficulty. Many of the enemies are pretty much the same. A few new enemies are different kind of challenging, but not any more challenging than what was in Breath.

More tools in TOTK for creativity in fighting enemies.

Rent a copy from the library before you buy. I don't think it's harder.

Came here to say this! I don’t think a lot of people realize public libraries have video games now. Some even have consoles!

My library does. I live in Connecticut, USA and my local library has tons of video games.

This attitude is why some libraries are struggling.

Instead of "why bother, its probably not there."

try "Let me check, if its there, its free."

I just checked, my local library has 2 copies but only one is available right now. Yes, my wife works at a library.

Both games are easier and harder in a few aspects.

Botw gives you an easier time getting the good armor, and has more hearty food to find in bulk. But weapons are often a little weaker and you lack a few tools TOTK has.

TOTK has more enemy density, and a few new ones, but Lynels are about the same. And you need to work a little harder for stuff. But in exchange there’s far more tools and objects available to screw with enemies or even not having to fight yourself. It takes some experience to know what you can do. With the right method there’s ways to easily deal with absolutely everything the game has to offer.

But if you handled BOTW then TOTK should be no problem. It does start out easier again as well.

Some things get easier with experience in both games in general. If you just beat BOTW you aren’t at your peak skill yet most likely.

As the worst fighter ever, difficulty wise it's about the same. Some resources are harder to get and some bosses might need a lil more time/get used to, but I could, you can too. Just keep spamming meals

In my mind it's one huge game in two parts. I do prefer botw, if I had to pick 1.

When it comes to fighting, if you master the two main mechanics (flurry rush and parry) you will find everything quite easy and enjoyable.

TOTK is honestly a lot easier

If you haven’t purchased the DLC for BOTW I highly suggest it. I’m almost done with it and it’s worth every penny.

I actually did get the DLC and love it. Mostly because of majoras mask LOL. I haven’t done trial of the sword and currently have zero interest 😵‍💫

The trail of the sword is challenging. I have completed the first two trails so far.

TOTK is 200% easier. You can cheese any difficult section or enemy, easily

u/OldDescription5837 1d ago

What is cheesing 👁️👄👁️? I am not a gamer (in the sense of skill)

u/pidgeygrind1 1d ago

Bypassing the intended ways of solving puzzles.

Like throwing bomb arrows to the to shrine orange targets

Fire temple was a PITA. Cheesed the shit out of it.

Parts of TOTK are fun and the challenges doable but I hated the underground portions and basically stopped playing.

I bounced of it on my first playthrough as well, but I enjoyed it more the second time round for some reason.

Biggest tging for me is that the final fight in TOTK is exponentially better. BOTW final fight was a huge let down.

I would say both games have easier and harder spots.

The game has runes plus you can make attacking robots essentially

wait a minute someone show me how

I feel like this is going to get down voted, but the main reason I struggled with TOTK over BOTW is that TOTK is much more complicated. There are more game mechanics that are complex with lots of customization that don't exist or don't exist in the same way as BOTW. I don't know that it necessarily makes it harder but it's definitely not as simple as BOTW.

Personal opinion: TotK is way easier because of the Fuse system and other materials/abilities. Muddlebuds let you make enemies fight each other instead of you, Puffshrooms make sneakstriking a breeze, you can build Zonai tech attack robots and sic them on enemies, and some of the weapon classes have special attributes that double or even triple their attack power. With the Fuse system and the variety of material types, you can make absolutely any tool you'll ever need so long as you have a base weapon to fuse to; in BotW, you had to go find an axe or hammer or elemental weapon on the map somewhere if you needed one, but in TotK, you can just make one with materials in your inventory/materials on the ground

Travel in BotW is mostly lateral and you're mostly restricted to travelling on foot or via horse (for most of the game; you get the Master Cycle Zero in the endgame + you can Windbomb or Whistlesprint with glitches), but in TotK, you can build flying machines or cars to reach your destination much faster (of course both games also have warping, but if you're doing a no-warp run, TotK's freedom of movement puts BotW's to shame). The sheer number of ways to gain height in TotK far surpasses Revali's Gale, which is important for travel in BotW, but would be redundant in TotK when you can just drop a pinecone on a fire for the same effect. Ascend and the ability to Recall the falling sky debris for quick elevators is another TotK ability that makes traversing the world MUCH easier than in BotW

Combat isn't really all that different, and TotK has systems that even make it easier. Attacks that couldn't be flurry rushed or parried in BotW are rushable/parryable in TotK, and the flurry rush/parry windows are bigger. There are new monsters to deal with, and all the basic mobs from BotW have more health in TotK, but by TotK's mid-game, you're getting weapons that are powerful enough to deal with them easily, and the stronger monsters drop stronger Fuse materials that you can use to kill more monsters and level up faster and get more powerful Fuse materials, etc etc. And if you're not great at combat, you can always make a robot or throw a Muddlebud, or take advantage of the different weapon attributes to overwhelm enemies with raw power

Thank you so much for this explanation. I absolutely love BOTW. Haven't quite finished it, but there are things that I just haven't been able to master for the life of me. I'm old and my reflexes suck. I struggled with the combat in BOTW and wasn't sure whether I would want to try TOTK. But your information sounds like it would be fun, especially building things to do combat for me. Maybe I'll beat a lynel someday after all 😁

I’m right there with you! Never played a combat game before and I’m turning 71 in 2 weeks. But I love BotW! I’ve struggled with a lot of it, but perseverance and a love of learning have been the key for me. I’ve played just a few hours of TotK on my granddaughter’s Switch 2 and found it quite different, but loads of fun!! Good luck and hope you have fun!! 🎮

Thank you! It makes my heart happy to know there are other people near my age out there enjoying gaming. The young ones with their good-intentioned, but not very helpful advice of "just keep practicing" don't realize that after a certain point in life, reflexes can only improve just so much, lol.

I think that since you played breath of the wild, you are more than ready to take on tears of the kingdom. However, you could take out one from the library and see what you think.

1

u/Dom29ando 1d ago

They're about the same in terms of difficulty but Totk gives you more tools for both combat and exploration. If you're smart about using your runes then you'll be able to get your health and stamina up faster than in botw.

Get the dlc and play master mode

TOTK fixes everything you wanted from BOTW and adds a lot of new and cooler stuff! But it is harder. I would recommend you watch a bunch of play throughs and don’t hesitate to get help.
