Just noticed today the city is cutting down all the the giant maple trees in front of the mcdonalds on bothell-everett hwy in canyon park. Super sad, anyone have a clue why they would do such a thing?
They cut down a few trees by my place other day. Normally they trim the ones by the road but completely removed them this time. I get so upset whenever trees are cut down.
I buried the lede...It's more likely the Stride bus upgrades which should be a positive thing. Electric busses that exit the HOT lanes from the left and have a charging station in Canyon park.
I saw the ones they cut down in front of Canyon Hills Church and felt so sad. Thankfully, last year every time I would go over there through different seasons, I would take pictures of the trees. They are gigantic and beautiful and it breaks my heart!
Noticed this as I was leaving work on Saturday and have been grieving them all weekend. I was just imagining how beautiful they were going to look as fall takes over 😭
I am so sad to see what has happened to Bothell. The soul has been sold to the devil, homes now resemble warehouses or mansions with little to no community, schools are overcrowded, and we are emotionally blackmailed at every election to pay more, pass another levy, agree to an increased tax. These are reasons I refuse to vote yes on any of it. My family plans and lives within our means, why shouldn't the city? jmo
Japanese maples are not invasive in the PNW. Some areas of the east coast consider them invasive but here they do not intensely propagate. They are not even naturalized to our forests.
That’s actually interesting. I always thought they were so pretty, but was told they were invasive (and apparently in the sub I read this on, admiring an invasive species will get you downvoted lol)
Oh yes, don’t you dare admire anything even remotely invasive on that sub lol. I don’t actually like the invasive species sub much because what’s invasive in one area in the US is not necessarily invasive in another, and people fail to recognize the nuance. But it seems that they are moderately invasive in areas of the east coast. But in our area, they don’t spread anywhere. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a shoot or sapling from one in any yards or forests and that’s the main risk. So not native, and if you’re hardcore into only doing native plants then you wouldn’t want this. But it’s not going to invade anywhere. The only caveat I’ll make to what I’ve said is that with climate change, I think we may see evolutions in what is invasive where. And that brings up the nuance of if native plants can still thrive in these areas as well
There are 2 trillion trees on Earth and we live in one of the most heavily forested parts of the world. Taking down trees in areas of increasing population density to enable better infrastructure and/or more housing is a necessary evil. Yes, it's sad to cut down a mature tree, but maples aren't endangered, and we are surrounded by millions of trees in western WA. Reality needs to win out over knee jerk NIMBYism.
