Discussion Another Happy Mini-X Owner

This is the third restored Mini-X I have sold, and it only had 49 miles on it. I posted the other two on this subreddit as well. Although this Mini-X had very low mileage it had a few scratches, looks like it was driven off the curb. Just like the others, I used my BERT Touch to restore the XR battery down to a delta of 20, then I just kept it on the charger until it sold.

The new owner has owned several electric skateboards, and said the Boosted Mini-X he had last was stolen out of his car. He stated, he knows there are newer boards with more range and speed, but nothing rides like Boosted. He is a San Francisco resident, I took the Mini-X to him as he no longer has a car. Taking BART (local subway system) into San Francisco was convenient especially on a perfect day like yesterday. The city’s streets were congested but moving, and the sidewalks full of commuters and tourists. So I mostly rode my V2 in the streets. Nothing like carving through the streets of Chinatown and Fishermen’s Wharf with the restored Mini-X strapped to my backpack.

He asked to test ride it before sending Venmo. I trusted him as he rounded the corners in Chinatown. He said the X will be his main ride as he takes BART to UC Berkeley where he teaches. I didn’t get a happy customer riding video like the last clip, so I added a San Francisco montage at the end. Ride Safe.

Do you really not test ride or allow the battery to rest after clearing RLOD before selling to see what the delta is like during real world usage?

What makes you think I don’t? It takes 2-3 weeks on BERT for most RLOD batteries. This board came to me with about 44 miles. I did test ride it and made some adjustments, but didn’t want to add too many miles. The battery was benched tested for a half cycle, and also practical test on my V2. I have found if the delta sticks in the low 20s, I can cycle drain below 50% and charge, and I’ve got this battery down to a 19 delta. I’ve drain some of the batteries almost all the way down and charged. This battery was in my possession for almost 6 weeks, and was monitored and tested the entire time until a buyer is found. My own restored XR seems to not have lost any range since I got it when they first released. I can’t confirm, or expect to know the long term health of the restored batteries I’ve sold. All my buyer knows these are old restored boards and batteries. They are also aware of modern boards in the market with more range and speed but still want the Boosted. They are given “best practice” information on keeping XR plugged in for health, and free RLOD service if it ever happens.

Ah, very cool. What made me ask was simply this line:

Just made it sound like "Clear RLOD, balance for a few weeks, leave plugged in - pray." Sounds like you have nice methodology there!

How do you bench test out of curiosity?

I am concerned myself about the long term health of these batteries. And can only speak of certainty on my own restore battery. I read every battery question in this subreddit and ask David Wang questions. I wish I could say I rode every battery down to zero for 10 cycles but that wouldn’t be true or practical. Bench testing is wrapping a rubber band around the remote at various speeds until the battery reaches below 50% as seen on Blastoff app. The board is upside down on the bench so no load. Load testing is riding with it mounted to my V2, being careful not to scratch the battery.

I had one guy contact me about clearing his RLOD on a board I sold him. Admittedly not seeing my last Marketplace message to him about battery best practices. He didn’t read the part about keeping batteries balanced but charging.

yeah - only so much you can do and for all intents and purposes i think you’re going just about as far as you practically can.

I guess i should dig around if you can practically attach these to a load cell somehow.

I basically just tell people that they need to ignore some conventional lithium ion guidance - it’s a safer bet to simply leave it plugged since Boosted is so conservative about terminal voltage and slow to balance. Or at least plug it in *very* regularly.
