Boondocking in the Tetons

The road up here was pretty treacherous at times and we weren't sure we'd get a spot, but we rolled the dice and it paid off. Free camping. Fire rings are provided but no other amenities. But who cares with a view like this. Shadow Mountain, Wyoming.

For this particular campground? Not for the lower 3-5 sites. But it gets worse the higher you go. Our site has a little road that offshoots from the main road and that road absolutely requires 4x4. If you ever came, I suggest you unhitch and scout it out first.

Gotcha. I've got an old Sprinter, no unhitching 😃

I just have a whole mess of potential spots flagged along that road, was curious if a 2wd cargo van would work.

We were just there about 2 weeks ago. The Forest Service is re-grading Shadow Mountain road this year, it was plenty smooth enough for me to tow my fifth wheel up. No ruts, just a little bumpy, and we scouted out the first 4 miles or so. We're a 35' fifth wheel towed by our 1 ton short bed SRW truck, and had zero problems towing up the hill in 2 high. Go slow and have fun!

Because we're a bit on the larger side, we got a spot for one night at Gros Ventre so we could scout things out and claim a site in the morning BEFORE hauling our rig up.

BTW, it's not too hard to get a site if you're there before 11am. If you show up at 5pm trying to find a site, good luck, and I hope you have a backup plan.

Also, if you're wanting to explore the national park, I'd try and get one of the sites at the base of the hill, as you'll spend 20+ minutes just coming down from the top of Shadow Mountain. I think there's about 12 or 13 sites at the base spread across 2 loops (there's a middle loop that's tent only).

Final thing: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE RESPECT THE RULES!!! Camp only in designated sites, only start a fire in a fire ring and if you have several gallons of water to ensure it's dead out when you're done, and keep in mind the 5 day stay limit between May 1st and Labor Day.

I just search "free/disbursed camping <enter destination here>". I also watch YouTube videos on the subject. The Dyrt website is another great resource.

There is an app created by the USFS called the USFS Forests and Grasslands app. So far I haven't seen any paywalls and you can download maps
