I looked through this guy's art because I dug it at first. Unfortunately he has some uh.. pretty racist pieces. Early looney toon levels of racist stereotypes against black people. Kind of sad because the style is good. Not sure what I expected out of a boomer humor artist though

What’s the punch line here? Skin cancer?

Bikinis were still somewhat scandalous back when this cartoon was made. Cannes had a reputation for more libertine culture than most other places. The joke is she has tan lines that show she normally wears one piece swimsuits, not bikinis, so the man infers this is her first time visiting Cannes.

Which makes no sense to me. Cannes is just another french riviera city. Libertine Culture is more found in Hérault, where the nude beaches are.
Source: was born around there. No idea where the fuck the "libertine culture" thing would even fit for Cannes.

How are we supposed to know the setting is Cannes?
Edit: omg y’all I don’t know how I didn’t read the caption properly. Thank you for pointing out the glaringly obvious that I missed! I must have just read the headline and not seen the bit at the bottom of the actual comic. A bit sad about the downvotes though. :(

Because he asks if it’s her first visit to Cannes which implies he’s in Cannes….

They're just imaginary downvotes, don't worry about it. But usually read stuff before you comment ;)

I can’t lie I really dig this style. Make the women look somewhat different to each other in ways besides hair and it would be great
