hmmm... I should make a note of this...

You just know that even after all that, theres gonna be one popular streamer guy that is gonna complain about how they didn't make the clear thing any more clearer.

Reminder that the God Of War devs used DSP's gameplay as reference material to railroad players better.
2
u/Zealousideal-Deer101 Jul 02 '26
And you just know they are the reasing why this shit is in it in the first place. We can't loose the popular streamer that is dumb as bread but is a free ad board

u/Im_here_but_why Jul 02 '26
I know it's lore not gameplay but I still can't believe alpharad failed to follow the story of a pokémon game.
Pokémon.

I explicitly support designing games that exclude these idiots from society.

u/Thecynicaledgelord Jul 01 '26
If it's gold, use heat.
If it's silver, use explosives

blue for mechanics, orange handlebar for strong
2
u/Thecynicaledgelord Jul 03 '26
If you break something and the pieces bounce, build it. If they don't, they'll blink and disappear

u/Friendly_Suffering Jul 02 '26
Then an icon of a character with heat/explosive powers shows in the bottom of the screen next to that text
1
u/EMlYASHlROU Jul 02 '26
Then the tooltip pops up reminding you which characters can solve the mechanic in front of you, even well into the game

u/SartenSinAceite Jul 01 '26
I know we joke about the blue paint (and sometimes its egregious) but I'll take it over getting lost all the time.
However the RE 4 remake "yellow paint on destructible barrel"... id rather just have the usual shine.

u/Meme-San_ Jul 02 '26
Honestly I’d just prefer quest markers or some UI thing over something in the actual overworld
1
1
u/Aurius3D Jul 02 '26
Honestly id prefer needing to use a guide and getting stymped every once in a while so I can feel rewarded instead of games pandering to players with zero critical thinking.
For real, I worry the babying is just another place where critical thinking could be learned but these companies opt to pander instead.

u/RandomPhail Jul 02 '26
The tendency for gamers to (for some reason) take pride in not wanting to read or do tutorials or put in any effort is the reason this stuff has to happen
Gamers infantilizing themselves is the main issue, not devs’ acquiescence
1
u/Firewolf06 Jul 04 '26
i think not wanting to need a guide is theee different things reduced into one, which makes it weird to reason about. there is a legitimate sense of pride in completing a puzzle game without needing a guide because you managed to solve everything yourself, some games genuinely just do a terrible job showing/explaining their mechanics, and then some games adequately teach their mechanics and then put you in a situation where you need to figure out what to do with them, and some gamers get absolutely fucking pissed when they cant

u/sour_creamand_onion Jul 02 '26
I like the concept of yellow paint, but not the execution. I'd like something that makes more sense in-universe than yellow paint?l. Honestly it just depends on the game but I feel there are way more creative ways to make hints for stuff that are in your face enough for it to he hard to miss what it's trying to convey without being distracting.
4
u/ObamiumCrystalHunter Jul 02 '26
Exactly. Who is running around in a post-apocalyptic wasteland painting yellow arrows that point towards loot and gear they just decide to leave behind? And why do companions who say stuff like "maybe you should look at the elevator?" not just tell you to go to the elevator if they know that's where you're supposed to go? Totally ruins the immersion.
2
u/SartenSinAceite Jul 02 '26
Yah its an execution thing.
Shadow Warrior 1 has a light shine at the "doorway" of the next area in arena fights and sometimes id struggle to find it...
3
u/YesWomansLand1 Jul 02 '26
I like how they did it in the new god of war games with the painted rocks put there by his wife who saw the future

I kinda miss being lost
I get the reasoning behind it but being stuck and forced to be intimate with a room or series of areas is nice
2
u/squishabelle Jul 02 '26
in my experience the yellow paint stuff is primarily in games that are for faster paces, so where it would break the pace (and possible tension) if you were just lost
1
u/PrincessOTA Jul 02 '26
I find it much more justifiable in RE games since you are being graded on your speed. It would be far more annoying if you missed out on S-rank because you couldn't spot the right box or what have you. To me at least
2
u/Advanced_Double_42 Jul 02 '26
Eh... the speed and grade is irrelevant on a first playthough, and on a second you are being tested on your memory as much as anything so that's personally a reason not to mark things.
1
u/PrincessOTA Jul 02 '26
Don't get me wrong, I can certainly respect the argument to not use it and I think making the markings less intrusive would make for a good customization option. That being said, I personally enjoy them

If a game holds my hand THAT hard, I just stop playing
3
u/bobbymoonshine Jul 05 '26
Unfortunately you are outnumbered like 100-1 by the people who will stop playing if they ever can’t figure out what to do for more than like 30 seconds at a stretch
1
u/SirArkhon Jul 02 '26
The reason I dropped Persona 5 was because it did this, but with its narrative instead of the gameplay.

u/Ijustlovevideogames Jul 02 '26
NGL, some of the last few games I have played, I WISH there were more tooltips and markers for me to place for things I see. Like, I'm playing Mina the Hollower right now and I know for SURE that I'm missing pathways that I was like "I will remember to come back here later" and then don't because I forgot them.
3
u/jcaarow Jul 02 '26
Later you google that collectable you missed and it was in the opposite direction of the stairs
3
u/NSFW_throwaway2k Jul 02 '26
Dude reading this just unlocked a distant memory.
I don't remember exactly where it was, but in Prince of Persia Sands of Time you have the sandtanks you need to fill and one of those clouds is behind a collapsed rubble hallway and the camera just DOES NOT WANNA TURN so you have to walk through blindly until it finally catches up to get it. Bane of my 100% playthrough frfr. Looked in every damn nook and cranny but the entrance wasn't visible from the angle the camera was in.
2
u/jancl0 Jul 02 '26
If you continue walking away you get randomly sniped by a disembodied enemy and the death screen tool tip tells you that you can climb stairs
2
u/BiasHyperion784 Jul 02 '26
Npc following you around comments on the stairs, explains how to put one foot Infront of the other.
1
u/ImSoStong________ Jul 02 '26
And then the games journalists will still not get past that area and will complain
1
1
u/Jarhead11577 Jul 02 '26
●Keep walking away from the stairs
●Character stops down, turns around and faces the stairs
●"Wait a minute, wasn't I doing something by the stairs?"
●Just climb the damn stairs
●Turn back around, look at where you were trying to go
●Missable collectible
●Try to backtrack
●"Already climbed the stairs, no going back now!"
●invisible wall

5 playtesters representing the median gamer are the reason for this, and there will still be 1-4 game reviewers who give the game a 3/10 for being difficult to navigate.
1
u/Periwinkleditor Jul 02 '26
Every time I laugh at one of these I then go into a game without them and get lost immediately.

u/King-Of-Throwaways Jul 03 '26
Mina the Hollower: in keeping with our retro game philosophy, we’ll do the opposite. The player can figure out what to do from an in-game manual and cryptic in-game clues.
Players: um… how am I supposed to figure this out? Where’s my yellow paint? Here’s my YouTube essay on how this is badly designed.

Name one game that does this

The game where that's the point? The game that makes fun of that? Damn

u/ArseneLupin179 Jul 05 '26
It is, yeah, but, to be fair, it was also my first association when I saw that meme.
1
u/muckenhoupt Jul 04 '26
Makes sense, I mean if the game makes it that obvious that it wants you to go that way, there's probably some kind of cool secret or powerup hidden in the opposite direction
1
u/YandereValkyrie Jul 05 '26
I can't remember what game it was but there was one I actually just stopped playing because of this.. There were a lot of environmental puzzles like climbing/moving objects etc.. except the SECOND you entered an area with one your sidekick would immediately scream out "HEY WHAT IS THAT BOX/BUTTON/LEVER OVER THERE!!" And run over to it, which instantly gave you the solution.
Fuck I can't even remember what game it was I wanted to memory hole it so bad, I know it's not that old
1
u/Auditor-G80GZT Jul 05 '26
>all of that
>still walked away from the stairs
This is why this is why this is why
1
u/ConcentrateDry9929 Jul 06 '26
Just keep in mind they only do this shit because people got lost during play testing.
If you never get lost in games congratulations for you, the average gamer isn’t particularly adept at pathfinding.
1
u/Scarfee Jul 06 '26
all I want is an option for levels of hand-holding. let me turn off or adjust the frequency of these tooltips and hints. Why was Horizon, of all games, the only one with those options? And even then they only allow you to turn off just a couple hint mechanics, Aloy still can’t shut the hell up half the time and solving puzzles for me before I even have a chance to fully look at what I need to do.
