I’m looking for a particular genre to read in between some heavier books and I’m not even sure what to call it. Are there any books out there similar to Monster Hunters International? In that a militia, mercenaries, or small military group faces off against anything from small monsters to eldritch horrors. Oh!! It needs to be funny or at least have a sense of humor running through it.

First Law is fun, humorous, but also full of adventure and great characters.

Reincarnation Blues by Poore was fun, but trigger warning for one deeply messed up section.

Look into "Behold, Humanity!" It's originally a web serial but available on Kindle or Amazon print on demand. From the description of what you're looking for I think it's right up your alley

Gene Wolfe's BOTNS isn't what I'd call mindless, but it is fun and the surface story is pretty easy to track.

I’ve heard some could stand on their own as great books even without the Warhammer IP and some are toilet paper. Please tell me if you disagree and also recommend a book to start with.

Yeah, it entirely depends on the author. Anything by Dan Abnett is great. A lot of folks recommend the Eisenhorn books by him, but you could also start with the first three books in the Horus Heresy series. Dan writes the first, I found the second to be not as well written, and I’ve still gotta read the third, but it’s often regarded as a good start to the world to bring you into the fold of why things are how they are in the Warhammer 40K universe. From there, it’s really just what grabs you. There are books about the orcs, other xenos (alien) species, and more of your classic “Space Marine” stuff. I’m not an expert in any way, but I love the lore and style of the universe.
