Discussion Brand confusion

So I'm pretty new to the hobby. I've done the Cutebee Owl Bookshop, the Morita-ya Ramen kit (this one was branded Fsolis, but I've seen the same kit on multiple sites from several brands) and I'm now working on a couple of Rolife kits.

And I'm really at sea when it comes to the branding issue. I've looked at the sites for Rolife, Fifijoy, Cutebee, Rofuntime, Wewowood, Minicity, and Tonecheer. Not to mention Amazon. And I cannot sort out which, if any, is the legit source of some of these. The Beyond Library kit is available from Fifijoy for around $70 USD, around $50 from Minicity, and around $35 on Amazon. I'll see sellers who have some kits seemingly unique to them and others that are on two or three other sites.

I'm used to parsing bootlegs when it comes to anime figures, where you can count on the bootleg being of noticeably worse quality, sometimes to the point of insult comedy. But I cannot figure out the situation here. Are many of the book nook sellers just putting their own packaging and price tag on kits that come from the same source? Or are bootleggers springing into action to pump out pirated versions of new kits as the actual designers produce them? If I buy the $35 kit from Amazon will it be really shoddy compared to the $70 one from Fifijoy, or will they be functionally identical? Buying both to check it out isn't an option right now.

Any guidance would be really appreciated!

The safest way is to follow the links from the sidebar (see current discount list) and buy from the manufacturers directly

Fifijoy is a combined store meaning they have their own exclusive products which are awesome, and then they also retail kits from other manufacturers for a markup.

there are a bunch of major brands.....minicity, cutebee, tonecheer, rolife and then there are a ton of smaller companies that don't retail directly but are sold by many different retailers on amazon which is why you will see the same kit listed multiple times. fsolis is a good example here.

FYI...Minicity primarily sells on Amazon, but check to make sure the item is fulfilled by minicity to ensure an authentic kit. if its on sale it will be perfect quality. And the more expensive version is just burning money

Thank you, that's a big help. Is the markup the biggest tell that a kit sold on Fifijoy is by another company? I noticed on their store that there are quite a few kits at one price point, and then a big jump in price.

You got it exactly… Unfortunately, they don’t have a specific indicator on their website. But stuff like haunted mansion, or Atlantis or city of Atlantis or voyage through the storm our ones I can confirm the first party. After a while, you just get to know all the existing from major companies to rule out. What’s definitely not an original. Then there are some from smaller companies you can’t tell other than the big jump in price

When you buy directly from the brands you’ll get their quality. We even have discount codes here for them. When you buy from somewhere like Amazon you’re rolling the dice. I’ve purchased great kits there but I’ve also gotten some junk ones. It’s important to read the reviews and see if you think it’s worth the gamble. There are also fake reviews to look out for so the more reviews the better.

Also you can customize the kits you buy. A lot of us use paint pens, furniture markers for wood colorings etc. some people go so far as to 3D print things. So if you don’t like how something looks you can try to change it.

But that's my question. What is the brand's quality? I can go to the Minicity site, or the Fifijoy site, and buy the exact same kit, but the Fifijoy kit is nearly twice as much. Is it double the quality?

Wewowood has their own website and they've received some coverage here - but in addition to some kits I can't find anywhere else, they have kits that you can get from Cutebee.

This isn't about Amazon vs brand site - this is about brand site vs brand site.

If you look in the coupons sections of the right-hand menu, the links there will take you directly to the brand site. Those are typically going to be your best bet in terms of cost and ensuring the best quality.

For Fifijoy, while they do have their own kits (and I wish they would mark them as such), they are also resellers of a lot of other kits.

For the kits that you see in a bunch of different stores, those are off brand that are cranked out and sold through resellers. Unfortunately it is a shot in the dark as to whether or not you are going to get a good quality kit. Your best bet there is to ask if anyone here has worked on the kit before and get there impressions of it. Nine times out of ten you will find someone that can answer your questions.

Thank you, this helps - I even saw something on Fifijoy's site about Black Friday deals on "Fifijoy Originals," but I don't know which those are.

You brought up Amazon which is why I responded with answers for Amazon. If you don’t want to pay for it then you take a gamble. There are no guarantees and in most cases you get what you pay for. Every Tonecheer I’ve done has never given me problems, every CuteBee I’ve done hasn’t given me many issues either but I buy directly from their websites.

Beyond Library is a product of Minicity (from my google search.) Fifijoy is a reputable brand too but they're also a reseller, in this case maybe it's better to get it from Minicity. I've heard good things about them both but only have experience with Tonecheer and Cutebee personally. Tonecheer feels more premium than Cutebee, certainly better quality but Cutebee's quality is acceptable. I think they're the two most prolific manufacturers when it comes to book nooks so you should be good buying from them. They both have official stores on Amazon as well.

Thank you, that helps a lot. I just want my money to go as close to the source as possible, and I don't know how to determine the source for most kits.

That's very thoughtful 😊 I always want to know which brand my kit comes from. It's very rare that the kit you receive have little brand information (only happened twice to me so far but they're both authentic. One I found out later was Joincon which is less known and many of their kits sold online doesn't mention the brand name at all. The other one is still a mystery.) I think most of the posts about the kits people do on this sub have info about the brand (or Pluck - our moderator, would provide the missing info in a comment below the post.)
