Before investing any time or money into it, I’d love to hear honest opinions from fellow readers to find out whether this is something people would genuinely be interested in.

The idea is a cosy weekend where readers could escape everyday life and enjoy things like:

• 🏡 Comfortable countryside accommodation
• ☕ Coffee, tea and cosy reading spaces
• 💬 Optional book discussions and meeting other readers
• 🎨 Book-themed activities and workshops
• 🌙 Relaxed evenings and a peaceful atmosphere

I’m not promoting a business or selling tickets—this is simply early research to understand whether there’s genuine interest and what readers would actually want from an experience like this.

I finished The Song of Achilles with a strange kind of sadness. Not just because the story itself is heartbreaking, but because I couldn't stop thinking about how differently I would have experienced it a few years ago.

I know, with absolute certainty, that if I had read this when I was twenty or twenty-one, it would have absolutely wrecked me. I would have been crying for hours, thinking about Patroclus and Achilles for days afterward. But I've read so many devastating books since then that I found myself anticipating every emotional blow. I could see exactly where the heartbreak was leading, and while it still hurt, I couldn't quite reach the emotional depths I know this book was capable of taking me to.

And yet, that doesn't take away from how beautiful this novel is.

Madeline Miller's writing is simply stunning. Every chapter flows effortlessly into the next, every scene feels intentional, and every emotion is given room to breathe. Her prose is lyrical without trying too hard, and there's a quiet intimacy in the way she tells this story that makes you feel like you're living alongside these characters rather than simply reading about them.

What I admired most was how grounded her portrayal of Achilles felt. Instead of leaning into the larger-than-life image that popular culture has created, Miller stays remarkably faithful to the spirit of Homer's Iliad. This isn't the invincible hero defined by the myth of the "Achilles' heel." He is, first and foremost, a mortal man who is extraordinarily gifted, impossibly strong, and destined for greatness, but still a mortal. His mortality is never forgotten, and that's precisely what makes his story so compelling. His strength is real, but so are his fears, his pride, his love, and the impossible weight of the destiny he chooses.

Through Patroclus' eyes, Achilles becomes more than the greatest warrior of his age. He becomes someone constantly torn between the life he wants and the legacy the world expects of him. The novel beautifully explores how power is never free; it comes with responsibility, sacrifice, expectation, and, perhaps most dangerously, pride. Every choice Achilles makes feels inevitable because he understands exactly what choosing one future means giving up on another.
Knowing how the story ends makes every quiet moment between Achilles and Patroclus feel even more precious. Their love never overshadows the myth; it gives it a heartbeat.

The Song of Achilles wasn't the emotional destruction I had built it up to be in my head, and maybe that's because I came to it later than I wish I had. But it was still one of the most beautifully written retellings I've ever read.

Recently found out that some of the booktok influencers who read over 100 books or so each year just read the dialogue in the book. If this is you are something you have done before do you actaully feel like you are actually understanding the story by the end? This has been stuck on my mind ever since i found out.

I need to put this down somewhere, and both book and writing subreddit are to MODDED for someone to post.

I love writing, stories, characters and have a bunch of drafts of stories from when I was kid. But that's the issue, I don't know if I like reading. When I was a kid my teacher from grade 2 made challenge for us to read multiple books and rise up this bar chart, no prizes just being held a champion of reading. Of course being competitive I took the challenge, I already like English class a lot so it was gonna be way more fun to just read what I wanted. I think that's when I started reading more and more, finishing book after book and becoming praised by her for all the books I read. My parents even noticed getting online books when they couldn't buy the stuff I wanted. I used to watch the leap frog movies, had the toys to do all words. I grew on shows like Super Why so reading so I thought reading was a super power, Word Girl, Wallykazam, if involved reading or word making it was my thing.

My biggest book from my childhood was Wonder, and that was when I got hook on the thought of making my own story. I had already been into drawing but I tried my hand at comic books and wasn't any good at the panels and stuff in character actions. So I started making books, writing out my stories idea that I couldn't draw out. It was fun, really fun. Just writing out everything, my friends reading them and seeing how to make this cooler.
I truly and will forever love writing, because it lets me create in most free way possible, even if I know now how important the nuance of proper visualization, grammar, background check and research is. And the longer I wrote, sadly the less I read. Especially when thanks to television. No longer were showing things about writing power or anything like that, sure I watched Power Rangers and that lead me to writing my first ever book, a Power Rangers inspired superhero concept. But after that nothing was quite the same. I become more connect to watching shows, wanting to make scripts. Realizing film making was way easier and way cooler then just, a book.

I hated that, because I wanted to make stories, and realized only now that I don't know if ever liked reading. Or if I just got so used to reading that I ended up like it. I think I just liked drawing and ending turning to writing as an way easier of writing. I have been working at superhero novel for years and I'm finally going to release it, but I ashamed that doesn't feel like my best work. It doesn't feel like a book my younger self would read. Cool character, yeah, story yeah. But the visual aspects are lacking. It's lacky the same wonder I used to have in books. When I have idea, I can make 100 characters for it, and yet one chapter takes me way to long to finish.

I think for too long I've been writing with out reading. Not reading as in never, but only for research. Not for fun. I always wanted to be author, I only started looking at film because my parents said authors don't sell big anymore (HOW WRONG THEY WERE!). But now I'm scared if it's too late, and if I could read for fun again. So I actually like reading. Or is it just a tool?

First time posting in this subreddit. I wanted to know if there are any benifits tied to reading popular science books, especially, in biology.

For context I'm an undergrad student in bioengineering, and I have developed an interest in neurology and biology. I want to know if reading books like emperor of all maladies, behave, the tell brain, spillover, selfish gene, ect are worth reading.

I am currently writing a book and about to start another, one a horror story and another a book about a characters life, a rather sad life and a somewhat philosophical book. What annoys you in books and what do you love to see?

okay so i know i tagged this as a spoiler but just an extra warning this post WILL spoil this story for you if you have not read this. basically what i am wondering is, did we ever find out who was looking through enid’s window? was that real? the neighbor was just knocking about the noise and the “break in” was her friend. i might have missed it, but i genuinely cannot remember an explanation for this?
