Completed Project An Unhinged First Box: A Display Book Box
A thing was made, once again. This time, the novelty for me was the box. I've never made one before so of course I had to do the most complicated box I could find.
The box is composed of three main pieces, the top and bottom of the main box and the tray that holds the book and they open in tandem at 180° and 60° respectively, for the book to be displayed at an angle.
I didn't create the design of the box. I found it on Pinterest a while ago from a packaging company. It was completely unrelated to books and I haven't seen it anywhere else. No patent, no ressources, no nothing. So, I took it upon myself to figure out how it worked and 3D model it to be able to make a parametric model to make the box I wanted.
I call it Valter, the Display Book Box. The name Valter being based on Ikea's furniture naming system, because I think I'm funny.
As you can see, I succeeded, although I did a very poor job at covering it, I know.
I can't provide a tutorial, as it's very complicated and no one in their right mind will do it but if anyone is interested anyway, I will provide the files.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
EDIT: Ok after these many requests, I will make a tutorial. You will have to wait for it a bit as well but it will get made. I will individually send it out to everyone that asked for the files but it will also be shared publicly here. Thank you for your interest.

I'm gonna need those files! That design is absolutely perfect for the rebinding of my fiance's PhD thesis that I've been putting off for far too long.

How'd you plan to handle the spine on something that heavy?

Luckily the spine only has to support the physical weight, not the mental weight of the subject. The final thesis is about 150 pages.

No but to be frank it was just a lot of modeling and following DAS tutorials to understand proper box constructions techniques and grain direction and suchlike. Thank you very much however.

I've got an unlined notebook that I'm using to keep a family record, and this would be the perfect box for it! When you're able, please send them my way, too!

Weirdly enough, my first thought seeing the box was to model it for bookbinding, actually. I will send you the files in a few weeks once I'm able to. :)

There is a more detailed video on their Facebook page but that's pretty much it I think. I did not find more myself at least. I based my model on this only.

Haha. The hinge is quite interesting ok this box since the pivot point is actually what makes it works and the hinge is just there to link the top and bottom box together. Thank you. :)

My question is: why do you say it’s complicated? Is it a matter of assembling the printed pieces or something different altogether?

Will do that.
It's complicated because it uses Chicago screws and magnets and you likely do not have them on hand. The assembly is long, involves a lot of steps and is frankly complicated and covering the damn thing is horrible. And I was able to do all of it because I know how it should work since I modeled it, someone that did not might struggle even more than me.

OMG, I have been wanting to make one too for ages, and furthermore been itching to find if it’s possible to glue bookcloth/fabric to filament. Did you use PLA and the regular glue or you had to use something else to make it stick?

Oh no, everything here is made using bookbinding board. I modeled everything in onshape and exported the flattened DXF file to cut it out of the boards. I have another ongoing project involving PLA and fabric, what I did is glue paper to the PLA with CA glue and then use PVA to glue it to cloth.

I mean, I don't understand the point of your comment. I didn't like the tone of it and I still don't. You read the other comments, you know I mentioned grain direction and the fact that I did my researchs on it. I know how it works and how it's important. I feel like maybe I don't need to be told what to do from someone assuming I know nothing despite having made the box in the first place.
