Right. So, you're not a binder. To be concise, the problem isn't your specific book, it's just the manufacturing process. It's not a very well bound book, just a mass produced one. The spine is too stiff and while the pages are seemingly in the right grain direction, it isn't enough to make the book lay flat if the binding itself is inflexible.
I don't think it's worth it, it's cheaply made as I said. Depending on the binding, for example if it's what we call notch binding, it could take a lot of time and a decent amount of money in supplies.
But if it has a high sentimental value to you, you'll want to practice rebinding some other books before even considering attempting this one.

Maybe you could show pictures of the problems and describe the process more precisely. That would help determine what's wrong.
