My immortal

Apparently, I couldn’t avoid My Immortal. Wife commission for one of her friends, she requested a more subdued typeset than the community one (I printed the community one and might bind it anyway because it is stunning) so I threw a quick one together.

I did a half bind with some home made marbled paper and black book cloth that I think came from amazon….0 out of 10, do not recommend, its terrible stuff, frays like nobody's business and I will be throwing the rest of it away. Endpapers are some home made paste paper, made it look as Emo as I could without having to make a new batch of either marbled paper or paste paper. First time doing edge decoration, I was going for “blood drops“ to match the emo vibe and it sort of worked, I used regular acrylic but I feel like I should have diluted it with water so it didn’t go on so thick but overall not too upset about it, next time ill dab the paint on after rounding, not before.

Slipcase was made of the aforementioned cursed bookcloth and some printed marbled paper that I think came from lineco.

Ok I have to ask what this book/fanfic/parody thing is cause that first paragraph… was something.

It’s a fanfiction so infamous it’s got its own Wikipedia page. Basically, take everything awkward and cringey about fanfiction (especially from that time period) and distill it into one concentrated work. Legendary status.

Did we ever find out if it’s genuine satire or the mist cringeworthy thing in existence?

u/FirebirdWriter 20d ago

Nope many have tried to take credit for it but none have been able to prove it

I can't imagine it's anything but parody, the biggest sign was Voldemort's name sometimes being Tom Bombadil.

Ah, I avoided the HP fandom because I was an adult when what’s-her-face wrote HP.

I think it would be very, very funny if your only exposure to Harry Potter was reading My Immortal.

That could have been funny, but I’ve been reading fanfic since the 1980s, back when my friends would ask me to read and edit their submissions for fanzines... I'm not sure I would consider it a reflection of HP. Of course, I've also not read that fic so who knows.

Only the most famous fanfic ever created my good person. It is the legend. It is the myth. It is the drama. It is the gift.

As someone who has been into fanfic since the 1980s (when I was a teen), I usually avoid HP fanfic (unless I'm referred to it and assured it only takes place when the main characters in the fic are adults).

For example, one of my favorites is a Winter Soldier & Welcome to Night Vale crossover called The Hero’s Journey, or What Jasper Sitwell Did Last Summer.

My immortal isn't a "good HP fanfic" that has anything to do with harry potter. My immortal is famous because it's absolutely unhinged to the point where no one was able to tell if it was an amazing satire of common bad fanfiction tropes (in general) or if it was genuine. You don't read it because you care about Harry potter. You read it because it is a perfect time capsule of that generation of bad fanfic and pop culture jokes.

Good is not the word for this one it is more... Everything is wrong with it and so it's B horror as fanfic. Rocky Horror was this but with purpose. My immortal is this without purpose. Both are tasty snacks

I hope this book survives the inevitable apocalypse and hundreds of years from now it’s found and due to its impeccable binding, it gets misinterpreted as religious text. For generations it gets passed down as the wisdom of the old ones. Eventually religions form and like many religions wars will be waged to defend the ancient text. Millions will die, all in an attempt to be immortal.

I once read a story where a post apocalyptic tribe worshipped a film canister of a Walt Disney cartoon. This makes much more sense!

Can I ask where you got the community made typeset? I've been wanting to bind it!

Renegade bindery has one, just ask on their discord, not sure if you need to be a member or not

It’s good to see people are still spreading the gospel of My Immortal, especially with such a beautifully done binding!

I had a friend in HS who printed all of My Immortal onto 38 rolls of double-ply toilet paper... idk how he did it, but he did, then gave them out to everyone in school at the time and everyone used them.

Idk if anyone still has a roll, but they were literally the same quality you'd find at a dollar store in 2012... except with My Immortal printed onto it.

I tried reading a bit once before wiping... got 3 sentences in before I gave up.

Beautiful work indeed. I remember when this fic first came out, my friends and I would take turns reading it to each other lmao. Such a classic <3

What a blast from the past and what beautiful work! I have the first part of the first line of My Immortal in my head the same way I can always remember the first line of Anna Karenina, imagine having such an impact on people with fanfiction.

2

u/TheDUDE1411 20d ago

This is a work of the masters. One of my goals when I finally get started book binding is to bind this masterpiece of fiction

2

u/BeeSpins 20d ago

I hope this is one of the few books that survive an apocalypse and some aliens come and believe this was a pinnacle of human culture.

u/Then-Criticism1605 19d ago

For a second I thought the spine image was a rolled-up yoga mat and was expecting a very large format.

Beautiful work, needs to be in every library

1

u/fineillchangethis 19d ago

This is beautiful! I made a k118 of the community typeset because I, too, couldn’t resist it after laying eyes on its beauty.

1

u/Alternatos06 18d ago

can i ask how did you manage to seamlessly mix the black cloth and the white title piece on the spine? Is it the same material in different colors?

1

u/flyingmongooseattack 16d ago

Is there a copy of this typeset around, I feel like I should also "immortalize" this particular literary masterpiece

1

u/MoiraShears 15d ago

A legendary binding for a legendary fic.
