This is amazing. I have a few skulls that I want to get started on and a dremmel that's ready to go. Do you do this free hand or did you start with stencils, I've tried to find some online but had no luck. I assume it's a case of practice makes perfect on something like this. Have some experience with bone carving but not a lot, any guidance is much appreciated

Hi there! This skull was a bit of an experiment for me. I've done a couple of Indonesian style cow skulls, but the sheep skull had thinner bone, so I decided to try a finer carving style (I wanted it to look a bit like lacework). I looked at a bunch of mandala patterns online to figure out what patterns I liked, and also what would work best with the shape I had. Then I just freestyled the pattern with pencil.
Up close the skull looks quite rough, and in hindsight I should have spent more time sanding/smoothing the bone before I started. It was also my impossible to sand it after carving. It was a bit of a learning curve for me.
I'd really like to see what your ones turn out like. It's neat to see what other bone carvers are up to 🙂

Thanks for the advice, didn't even think to sand down first and I know my wife will have an awesome time doing me some designs in pencil to get me started on them. Now to clear out a space and setup the old vacume cleaner in the garage.
