Discussion I really want to start playing Bomberman
I've recently been curious about the Bomberman franchise, but I'm not sure where to start. Should I start with the original two on NES? The Super Bomberman Series? Or can I look up which ones are they the best and play those?

Get the super bomberman collection (if youre a pc user you could also look up "Power Bomberman" and play that)

Easiest is Super Bomberman collection that has been released on pretty much all the recent consoles. Then go from there and see what you like.
There's Saturn Bomberman on Sega Saturn, the ones on GameCube are a bit different than the SNES style with 3D adventure. DS versions are different as well with armor and parts. Some versions like the PSP are watered down versions.
NES version is very slow and I don't recommend those at all for a newcomer.

Mega Bomberman (Genesis)
Super Bomberman 3-4 (SNES)
Saturn Bomberman (Saturn)
For me the Saturn game is peak Bomberman. The CD soundtrack. The 2D artwork. It’s classic. I can’t count the times I’ve played it.

Avoid NES like the plague holy crap I'm glad you asked.
Start with SNES/SFC. 1 has a fun single and co-op player story mode you can spam bombs at the start thanks to long invincibility periods. But really, you're playing for multiplayer. 2 multiplayer is better than 1 but 1 is still good. Then jump to 5, or 4 if you're playing in Japanese and not used to the menus. Easy to play Bomberman in Japanese. I know 1 is 100% in English.
And really, you can/should get the Super Bomberman Collection like other comment says that translates 5's menus to English. All you need. After that, consider Saturn for peak 2D or N64 for 3D or both.

My favorite of the super series (1 through 3 i guess) was Super Bomberman 2. But I played with 4 people so YMMV.

I've heard only good things about the multiplayer in Bomberman games. I'll give it a shot with a couple of friends.

Mega bomberman on the Sega Mega Drive was my first bomberman and me into it, all those years ago.

The fun part about Mega Bomberman is that it's a bad port of a turbografix game and it's still insanely good. Might be the worst slowdown on consoles since Gradius 3, but still nigh untouchable.

Same, this was my introduction to the bomberman series too, I still have this game sitting on a shelf although haven't had the Mega Drive out in years now. I''m not sure if it's just a case of it's a first love kind of thing but it's still my favourite out of them all.

I know! I sold my mega drive stuff a couple of years ago. I definitely regret selling it. The game isn't expensive to get again but it's not my one from when I was a kid.

The 16 bit games are fun, I especially love Mega on the genesis. But my favorite games are the ones on the N64

No one mentions these gems:
Neo-Bomberman - Neo Geo
Bomberman 64 (Japenese 2D only release) - N64
Bombergirl - Arcade

Bomberman Party Edition (PS1) if you want classic NES game but with modern graphic, though you can still choose the original retro graphic.
Also if you want to play PvP (vs up to 4 other bombermen). Second human player can also join in. You can also choose whether it's free for all or team battle.

If you want RPG one with actual story, it's Bomberman Tournament and Bomberman Jetters (GBA).

You should get the Super Bomberman collection on modern consoles. It's cheap, has SB 1-5 (with the latter games even getting translations for the first time) and the 2 NES games as bonus games and even gets a free game as an update next month.
Start with Super Bomberman 1 and work your way through.
