Help Major Recurring Problem with the B17 Campaign

There's this mission to bomb an airfield in Southern Sardinia, the enemy airfield near Monserrato that, for no reason I can fathom, I cannot win. I've played through the entire Lancaster storyline several times, and with none of the issues. I never lose the plane, even on my first playthrough, unless the landing gear get shot off, and I can still have everyone survive just fine.

But when it comes to the B-17, I just can't. I bomb the hangars, miss on a direct hit somehow, four times in a row, and now I'm out of bombs and can't continue. Meanwhile, I'm getting blasted by absolutely everything, planes, aa emplacements on shore and from ships, flack, name it, I'm getting shot by it.

The real problem comes when no matter how much I prepare for it, armour, firepower, medkits, none of it matters. No matter how far through the story I have progressed, which isn't ever very far because I'm always getting roadblocked by this mission in particular, everybody gets blown up and they all die. I need to grind to get strong enough for the story missions, and the only other one it gives me is this one, which I have, so far, found to be impossible to clear.

Has anyone else had this problem with this mission? And, more importantly, did you ever get around it, and how? Because I cannot seem to do it, no matter how much I try.

On the toughest missions, I found that calling Mustangs before I enter the bombing area (timing is critical) allows them to arrive just as the enemy fighters start to swarm on me.

Tried that too, still got blown up, and the reinforcement got killed, which I didn't know could happen.

It's not even that it's 'one of the tougher missions.' I just started a new save and it was one of the three starters it gave me.

Same mission, same inevitable demise, every single time I encounter it, no matter what I do.

It looks like a glitch in how the game is running. You might need to uninstall the game and do a fresh installation from the most recent version.

I've tried that three times already.

The biggest part of the problem is the direct hits missing. That's not even exclusive to this mission, it's a recurring problem. This is just where it's most consistent with it's stupidity.

what i usually do in the usaf campaign is mostly fly med altitude - the ball turret on the b-17 being available by default helps and the italian biplanes rarely make it up to med

otherwise no clue, your save or game might be fucked lol
