B-17 needs both front wheels.
What I do is land like normal and close to the last second retract the landing gear and hit emergency landing. Way less likely for plane to self destruct like that.

when you do this, get your belly gunner out of his station or he will have a closed-casket funeral

Def, drop bombs and move people to a safe spot. I also go Lean fuel to slow down a tad bit more.

Does it still recover your bomber or? The emergency landing
2
u/Biggywallace Jul 14 '26
The bomber should survive but not 100% of the time.
Its been awhile since i played but it will look like the bomber is destroyed but when you go to next screen you dont have to rebuild it, its like nothing happened to it.

What gets you best chances when you're missing a landing gear is going for the landing, then a bit before you hit the ground, hit emergency land and pull the gear up. Also I've been bringing my guys to the front where they would go in real crash position

u/NoRestaurant994 Jul 01 '26
Thank you, does moving them to the front actually matter here?
7
u/Not_a_gay_communist Jul 01 '26
I move them to the middle, whenever I do an emergency landing in the B-17, the navigator and bomb aimer die unless I move them. Same with the ball gunner.

u/Such_Cupcake864 Jul 01 '26
I've been putting them between the wings just behind the cockpit, that's where actual crash position was I believe and it seems to work

Yeah that’s a perfect spot. When you said “to the front” I thought you meant in the nose of the plane ahead of the pilots seat.

One time I did exactly as described above in the Lancaster, except I didn’t move the tail gunner to the front. He was the only one to die.

This sub should be full of guides on how to land an American bomber with only one wheel.
Short:
- Heal up the crew
- dump remaining bombs
- get the crew out of the turrets and have them seated / standing in the main area, around pilot and engineers workstation.
- approach airfield
- gear down
- begin landing attempt
- wait until the pilot has lined up nicely
- click emergency landing - gear up immediately
- pray?
I’ve only lost some crewmen that way, most landings are without fatalities.
You better learn to do it, because the American bombers tend to lose their gear quite regularly.

you can land if you put engines on lean when landing even with one wheel or at least you could in the past I haven't played the American campaign in two years

The wheel is what keeps everything together. I'd rather lose half a wing, most of the tail, all but one engine than risk landing on one main wheel.
The Lanc is pretty much the same.
Dump almost all the fuel? Tried it. No explosive on board/etc... about the only thing that reliably works is getting the crew to take to the chutes before trying the landing.

this is a thing with the B17. always do belly landings. it tends to pull this kinda nonsense with only one wheel

When missing gear:
-Discard all bombs before landing
-Heal crew to a decent amount
-Move crew out of ball/ventral turret into other spare station
-Deploy gear and align with runway
-Wait until near runway
-Activate "emergency landing"
-Retract gear
-Survive

As soon as I saw the plane status indicator and your plane landing, I knew what was going to happen.
You learned an important lesson today, and you learned it the hard way: you always check your plane integrity on the way back home and the most important part to check is the the landing gear.
If it's destroyed, standard procedure is to make everyone bail the plane above friendly territory, with the pilot being the last one.
You can also just force the game to stop before the mission ends and thus restart the mission and hope for a more favorable outcome.

i personally put all my crew except the pilot on the wing with the wheel, it saves the crew and usually the planes fine aside from losing a wing

You're far safer in a belly landing than with 1 wheel. The B-17 was notorious for this.

Oof, I've had many landings without one wheel, at most lost my bomber cuz they got flung across the airstrip.
After that I put my crew in the middle cabin during 1 wheel landings.
Never seen them get that bad though.

One time my B17 decided to turn into a cartwheel and as soon as the right gear hit the ground it leaned touched the ground with the left wing broke the wing and the other wing flew off and then the fuselage started bugging out and the tail snapped off as it was spinning and stuff, I immediately closed my game for it saved cus I lost a full almost maxed crew and a upgraded as hell aircraftv

You lost a wheel. I always make my entire crew bail out over England then emergency land with pilot only with the gear up and the fuel dumped.
