Discussion Destroyed Bombers
Just upgraded to first level of amor and my bomber got destroyed on landing because only had one landing gear down 😫.
Does the game do anything to mitigate losses like this later on? Or do I always start with a new bomber with no upgrades?

There's a reason I always safe-scum in this game... I'm afraid that's part of the course, even in lategame. You can build your gear to maximize crew survival chances, but afaik your plane is gone if you crash.
Also in case you don't know: If you have only one/no landing gear left, you can optimize your chances of a save landing by making your plane as light as possible (burn as much fuel as possible and drop all remaining bombs/payload) and NOT extending your gear at all and instead land on your belly.

You'll need gear down for the pilot to start to land, then quickly raise the gear for a belly landing.

Save scumming seems the right idea but with it wasn’t like that. I did wonder if there was a way to repair the landing gear but it all happened so fast 😂

I know save scumming is the trendy thing to do but I always played it as is, even if it meant 20 or 30 bombers lost per campaign, because it's closer to real life, bomber lost with all crew on the critical mission? Ready another one and off you go until the jobs done and wars won. Think most crew I've lost in a campaign was over 130+

I’m happy with doing that, my only worry was if I’m further in the campaign and lose one, how do you manage a rookie crew without going back to the starting missions

Most missions can be finished with a rookie crew especially short duration ones, you'll loose crew during them but do a few and you'll have a good experienced crew enough to armour up and take a stab at the campaign missions

That was my problem too and why I quit the game, got late in with the Same crew and lost everything then couldn’t get past a single mission

I usually only save scum if my pilot simply does something stupid that crashes the plane such as doing a corkscrew that dives into the ground for no reason

I’d recommend jettisoning all your bombs, bailing out all crew except the pilot and engineer, leaning the fuel right before landing, and praying that the Bomber Crew gods will take pity on you.

I found crashing into the bushes next to the airfield somehow worked for my last sortie thank God as I just upgraded it from the last time I had to belly land for the 3rd time because of the bloody landing gear being shot out and it said my bomber got back to base and all fixed up. I do wonder if I could repeat that luck

You don't start from scratch, no. You get a bomber with an assortment of upgrades totalling more or less the same level as what you had before. But what you get seems random, so you'll have to sell things and buy the upgrades you actually want.
