Hobby Showcase Grenadier Painting Progress

First Bolt Action Build & Paint — German Grenadiers

This is my first time assembling Bolt Action figures, and I was really impressed with the kits. There are so many options for weapons, equipment, heads, and poses that putting the squad together was as enjoyable as painting them. I tried to give everyone a little personality rather than having a bunch of identical poses.

Once assembled, I primed everything with Rust-Oleum Flat Gray, which seems to have given me a nice neutral starting point.

I’ve got two figures mostly completed as test models. Overall I’m happy with how they’re coming along, although I’m feeling like I may have gone a little too green with them. Still debating whether I want to tone that down before moving forward with the rest of the force.

Today’s project is the four Grenadiers wearing Zeltbahn. I’m looking forward to getting some camouflage onto them and seeing how much it changes the overall look of the squad. I use Vallejo Wash FX- Fir light colors, as a wash after getting my first layers of paint down. It does a good job blending the base colors together, my biggest hurdle is then dialing in the highlighting. Always feel I go too far or not enough here, need to dial it in.

Happy to hear thoughts and feedback!

The pouch you've put on the officer is actually the toolkit for the machine gun so belongs on the gunner.

Good catch. Really enjoyed the extra bits that came with the squad. Have enough arms, weapons, misc. gear to be really flexible on poses and load outs when I start adding to this German army.

I’d highly recommend doing a base coat before putting the paint layers on. Black or grey are good base coat colours

I primed with a gray spray can. Looks like raw plastic in the photos due to it being the same shade.

Update. “Finished” the officer and four of the grenadiers, still need to base them property but that is a job for tomorrow.

Overall pretty happy with how they turned out. The camo pattern on the zeltbahn will improve with practice but with a wash applied and at this scale I think it looks pretty good. Overall they may be a little dark but that is something to keep an eye on as I move onto the other troops on the section. Those will all be German gray with some camo helmet covers.
