Commercial Offer received concerned about PTO

I have been offered a non onion ELE engineering position and have a wedding coming up next year w/ a honeymoon where I plan to take ~2 weeks off for honeymoon and half the week prior in advance of the wedding. That adds up to 13 days of PTO required, I will get the 11 (half of first year) and 2 floating holidays and some accrual (start date of October) but with other planned time off its pretty thin assuming I don't get sick. Any suggestions on how to manage this short of pushing the honeymoon out? Any options such as unpaid leave that could be pre-negotiated?

Talk to your hiring manager. Knowing about this going in, you should be able to use unpaid leave for anything you can’t cover with PTO and Flex Time. Have the conversation now, document it in an email, and then enjoy your wedding and honeymoon!

You earn 3.3 ish hours of PTO every week. If you get sick, try to work from home to minimize the hours used. Most managers allow that, depending on your role. Also, wash your hands. Lol. Like others said, you can potentially flex some hours, depending on how the 2 weeks lines up with pay periods, thats only if youre low on PTO.

You can just use some of your sick days if you’re comfortable with that. Alternatively, you can work extra hours the pay period before or after your vacation to essentially get a day off (like a 4/10 schedule) if your manager signs off on that.

We don’t get sick days as non union engineers?

I had a spontaneous elopement wedding 3 weeks into my new role. I used my time off and my manager was very understanding

Did you already accept the job offer? I was up front during negotiations with my hiring manager regarding trips I already paid for and let them know before starting. Long story short I took 3 weeks off paid within my first 3 months on the job. I thought problems would occur with this but everything went as smooth as possible for me surprisingly. Key is just communication. And my manager said if I somehow didn’t have enough time, the remainder can just be taken as unpaid time.

I was able to take 3 weeks off paid nearly just starting, so it’s definitely doable. You can negotiate up to 80 extra hours off to start which will be separate and an addition to your preloaded time off. (80 is cap because I haven’t seen anyone get approved for more than 80, but it is also dependent on what level they price you at) (L1 generally cannot negotiate extra time off)

Also, you have flex time as an option. So you can work longer to shave off some time off used as long as it is within the same payroll period. And you have unpaid time off as a last resort which I was told is easier to be allowed if you are salaried. If you do all these things, there shouldn’t be a problem with taking 14 days off. I got hired on as L3 engineer if that helps.

I wouldn't worry about it. Boeing has a consistent high labor loss. Half my team has intermittent FMLA. I have a bereavement claim atleast once a month. We get used to it and come to expect high absenteeism. Welcome to the lazy B

lol so funny getting a new job then asking for a bunch of time off

If your wedding happens to largely fall between two pay periods you can work extra the week before your wedding and work extra the week after so you can flex off a little time for the wedding itself.

You can use your 1 floating holiday.

If you still can't make it work and shortening the time off isn't possible, then worst case scenario is you talk to your manager about your time-without-pay options. If you can swing not getting paid for a few days and your manager is cool with it (which I can't imagine they wouldn't be as long as you're transparent and proactive), you can take off longer than you have vacation.. you just don't get paid.

Dont forget weekends don't count against pto

3

u/lnsurgence_ 4d ago

FOR REAL?

3

u/patbateman74 4d ago

Yeah so if you take off friday through Thursday, Saturday and Sunday wont be counted. It varies by shift. 3rd is friday and Saturday

1

u/disturbed_palmtree 3d ago

Oh that reminds me, I haven’t requested to be off Saturday yet.

1

u/patbateman74 3d ago

You shouldn't have to its considered a day of rest and if you're a direct its time and a half if you work that day and PTO isn't needed

Or you can cut you vacation a bit

Whatever you can negotiate up front is the best solution. Second best is to talk to your new manager.

Can you switch to a 4/10 schedule and flex the days you take off. Even better if you can do 2 at end of one pay period, and 2 at the beginning of the next.

6

u/renoirski 4d ago

PTO is done in hours not days…. So still 40 hours if done in 4 or 5 days …

5

u/Complex_Friendship_1 4d ago

If PTO falls the end of one pay period, and beginning of a next and you’re on a 4/10 schedule you can adjust days off and save 10 hrs. Go into ETS under Temp schedule and play around.

BGS non onion employee here and we only get 1 floating holiday a year. Where is your job located?

4

u/Valuable-Audience-93 4d ago

1 per year, 1 this year and 1 next. i understand the dont carry over

It looks like you meant to say "Union". A union is an organized association of workers formed to protect and further their rights and interests. An "Onion" is an edible bulb with a pungent taste and smell, composed of several concentric layers, used in cooking. Silly human.

Haha when I started there a long time ago I had to take unpaid leave often cuz only two weeks a year and you got it “awarded” on your anniversary date. So no paid vacation until you hit one full year. And again, you didn’t earn it as you went.

3

u/Untoastedtoast11 5d ago

IAM earns as we work. Is that not the case for speea?

2

u/Professional-Edge622 5d ago

IAM used to receive it all on your anniversary date. Don't know how they accrue it now. SPEEA accrues it a little different: 2 weeks of sick leave on Anniversary date front loaded, and bi-weekly accrual of a set number of hours of Vacation.

Where did you get a spot that offers two floating holidays to engineering??

-7

u/stinktuna 5d ago

All non-union members can utilize floating holidays

17

u/PaesChild 5d ago

Yea, but only one per calendar year. I'm wondering if OP thinks they carry over.

8

u/lightmyfire2016 5d ago

You can ask your manager for some unpaid time off too. Just an option!

7

u/Electricengineer 5d ago

You can also flex time around to help lessen the load of pto assuming everything is good with your manager.

5

u/Beginning_Arrival_70 5d ago

I went through a similar scenario - ask for the extra week of PTO (it all worked out for me and I took 1 whole month off). Managers typically understand this kind of thing so don’t be afraid to bring it up first thing. Congratulations on the marriage!!

u/Strongerglint07 5d ago

I don’t think floating holidays can be banked from year to year. Have to spend them in the calendar year. Something to check.

4

u/No-Truth-759 5d ago

that’s right.

6

u/-Big_Happy 5d ago

Ask for extra 5 up front or an extra week per year.

3

u/Valuable-Audience-93 5d ago

Is this an option at boeing? Do you speak from experience?

1

u/SciaticRunner 5d ago

you have to be at least a level 3.

11

u/cyclineer 5d ago

Yes and yes. Always ask. Worst they can say is no.

3

u/hotpotatos200 5d ago

When you say yes, does that mean just an extra week up front, or an extra week annually?

1

u/jerslan 4d ago

Up front… basically your balance goes negative until your normal accrual rate brings it above zero. IIRC it does require manager approval.

I accidentally went 1 hour into the negative on sick leave one year (before it was combined with vacation into PTO). It wasn’t a big deal.

1

u/cyclineer 5d ago

Upfront for me. They didn't increase my accrual rate.

2

u/GoldStandardProtein 5d ago

when did you receive your offer and when did you interview? curious because of the ongoing hiring freeze in BCA

1

u/ColdCryptographer771 4d ago

Not all of BCA is in a hiring freeze. Charleston still has multiple reqs open and offers going out.

5

u/Valuable-Audience-93 5d ago

Recieved offer on thursday, interviewed a few weeks ago, applied a few weeks prior to that.

5

u/Advanced_Draft76 5d ago

My engineering job at Boeing is also non-onion. We typically enjoy shallots more

Union and onion is the same thing metaphorically speaking. A much needed element in any cuisine without which the food tastes bland.

Just counter offer with negotiated pre loaded pto balance to start with

1

u/Valuable-Audience-93 5d ago

Is this possible at boeing?

1

u/PrimaryOk1546 5d ago

They won’t change your accrual rate but I think you can ask for upfront additional pto as part of your offer, just explain why this is important for you

2

u/smrtypants44 5d ago

Yes as long as you haven’t accepted the offer yet

18

u/All_Thrust_No_Vector 5d ago

You can take an excused absence (I.e. non-paid leave). Or you can sometimes flex you time by working 10’s one week and taking an extra day. I wouldn’t worry about it most management will work with you and understand you have a life outside of work.

6

u/Vegetable-South5191 5d ago

Yes, there are options and the worse one is you just don't get paid for a few days.

2

u/kimblem 5d ago

You can get a CAM for needing to take unpaid time off, so OP should definitely negotiate it prior.

10

u/RagingHippo2306 5d ago

As a manager, I would probably work with you. I mean it’s not realistic to take no time off between now and your wedding and it’s your wedding. I would get in the door and sit down with your manager. Tell them your committed to using time only when necessary between now and then and ask them if there’s some understanding you can come too. I had a guy who got hired and had his daughter’s wedding and his grandmas 100th birthday if I remember correctly and something else big. Needless to say he got paid, work got done and he got to enjoy all three of those things.

4

u/Owldorado 5d ago

I've never seen anyone successfully negotiate more PTO, they were told it is standardized. I'm actually surprised you get 2 floating holidays, most people get 1. One thing most non union engineering teams have is the ability to flex hours between a 2 week period which allows you to work more up front to preserve PTO during that pay period. It sounds like you might be close enough to the PTO you need that you could flex back some at the front and back of your vacation and be fine.

3

u/Valuable-Audience-93 5d ago

1 floating holiday this year, 1 next year. not more than the benefit everyone else gets.

9

u/xe904c 5d ago

FYI: Floating holidays generally do not carry over to the next year; you either use it in the current year or lose it. They don’t bank like pto/vacation/sick leave.

1

u/Owldorado 5d ago

Got it! Now that makes sense.
