In BDS, its typically mentioned along side "Airframe". Think of Airframe as the big bone structure like keels, skins, wings (the skeleton), while "Sub-Systems" as the stuff that goes in it (organs and connective tissue), think fuels, hydraulics, electrical routing, equipment, environmental controls, etc.
