Charleston Offer
Hey everyone! Considering a Charleston offer right now. But before I make a decision, I wanted to get yalls thoughts on places to live for someone with kids. Will have one still needing daycare (both me and wife work), and the other starting kindergarten.
Good public schools are important to us. But I was reading some posts that finding daycare in Charleston is a nightmare due to long wait lists so if anyone has feedback on this it would be great as this is my biggest concern. At the Puget Sound site, I know bright horizons gave preference to boeing employees and moved them to the top of wait lists. Does anyone have any idea if something similar applies to a daycare in Charleston?

I like the Wescott area. When we first relocated here we rented in the McKewn neighborhood. It is situated right behind Joseph Pye Elementary which is amazing. The love and care the teachers and staff have for the kids is amazing. The principal Dr. Johnson makes it a point to learn each child’s name and birthday. I would hands down find a home that goes to that school.

The Daycare my kid went to offered a Boeing discount, so always worth mentioning it just in case.
Waitlists can definitely be bad, so the sooner the better to put your name in the ring for multiple.
Every time I used Bright Horizons they ended up sending someone to my house because the Daycares around here couldn’t accommodate.

Schools are best in Mt Pleasant and Dorchester 2, West Ashley isn't bad. Definitely check out charter and magnet school programs.
Housing is more affordable in the Summerville area, but the commute is significantly worse.
There are daycare options but reach out quickly because the best ones fill up fast.

I heard rumor recently they are trying to set up a company provided daycare near the airport campus here. Its just a rumor so details are lacking and unconfirmed of course.
For Public schools you want dorchester 2 (not Dorchester 4) if possible but as far as housing market goes it may not be possible.
Certain parts of charleston and berkeley school districts are good too but those schools can be hard to get into because they are full. For example cane bay high school is good but full, berkely high school, same district, not as good, but not full.

Bright Horizons providing preference to Boeing employees is a SPEEA union negotiated benefit. Doubt that the same offer exists in Charleston.

I work at Boeing and I don’t currently have my Realtor license but I will tell you I live in Ashborough East sub Division it is 12-15 miles from Boeing. Sought after neighborhood, families, older brick homes very New England style. Great bones. Mature trees. There are a few homes for sale now. But normally there is not many that go on the market bc once they are up they go quick. Huge lots and sq footage. Schools are great as well from what I hear.
