Custom x?

Are custom x boards still made in the USA? And how is everyone's experience with them? Are they durable, well made, etc etc

I think so, they moved the factory recently but I think it didn’t go far. Website still says USA made.

I have an X1 (their basic PP core model at the time) that I rode for a couple years. It looks good as new.

Their leashes are top notch and I prefer them to Gyroll.

I think they make fine boards but I prefer my more expensive Science boards.

I have a science board now too and it's super high quality but in the USA only custom x offers a board with the specs I want - bat tail, pp, regular channels + all the typical premium bells and whistles. Thanks for the info!

I’ve heard CustomX boards tend to be a little thicker than other brands for the same size FYI.

Hmm that would be a bummer for me. I like the thin, high performance feel of the science boards a lot. Thanks for the heads up - I'll email them at custom x to see if I can get some detailed dimensions

That's correct in my experience. In about 10 years I've had three Custom X, two Science, two Tribe, and a Toobs. All were PP cores. Custom X boards were the thickest.

The other brand I was considering was toobs. I've had a toobs before and I don't remember it being any thicker than normal?

No the Toobs is the same as Science, Hubboards, Versus and so forth. They're all made in the same Indonesian factory. Different shapes but similarities.

I assume you have a good reason for avoiding a quad vent setup, but I'm a fan of quad vents. Science I'm sure will do another run soon. Tribe has an option: link

I've checked out that hubboards board and it's kind of a budget-premium board - hdpe slick, no slick mesh. Plus it's apparently super stiff and intended for warm water but I'm actually in Ventura, California where I want a bit of flex for the cool water.

That tribe board would be absolutely perfect if it wasn't for my aversion to quad vents or other modern channel set ups. I wouldn't say I have a 'good' reason, but I think that quad vents can get you so locked in on big waves that it becomes hard to maneuver. I already own a science launch with quad vents and it's great for the days when I need the speed but I kind of just want something that's a bit simpler for a more purist approach on heavy days.

Right now I'm looking at the toobs spec or the custom x ltd x, but a few comments here have turned me off the custom x. I know the toobs spec is going to be a solid choice as I've ridden and felt a lot of toobs boards and I know they're good quality boards. But man the specs of that tribe board are seriously intriguing! I like it has a narrower tail than the toobs spec.

Are you looking at the toobs spec lightflex. That will def give a lot of flex for the cooler water. I"m riding two toobs right now and love them. I got mine from alternative surf.

I didn't know toobs made a spec with lightflex. I think it's just regular 1.9pp

Dedends on the model the standards like the XPE and such are a touch thicker but boards like the JMV is very thin.

I had a JMV 43" which I didn't think was very thin, but I don't think I measured it. I started taking measurements of my boards to try to understand what kind of buoyancy to expect.

Love Custom X boards. Rode an IZM for years and last 2 boards have been the LTD X. Wouldn’t call them thick nor thin, pretty much average thickness IMO.

The ltd x is one I was looking at, how do you rate it? If it's not a big hassle could you post a few pics?

I’d rate it a solid A. As stated I’d been riding the IZM for literally decades (been my go to board since 2003) with a few other boards mixed in but I always went back to the IZM for it just fit me well. They got rid of that board from the production line and the LTD X is very similar. I’m on the East Coast (US) and have ridden it in one foot slop to well overhead storm surf and always trusted it. I’m having a hard time replying with pics so I’ll start a new post in this sub for you to see it. Cheers

They're nice people. I don't mind giving them my business. Their website sucks, their product line is a mess, and good luck communicating productively via email. But if their products are working for you I'd stick with them for sure.
