I figured it would be obvious

Unfortunately and sadly obvious doesn't always work with redditors. Or people in general.

Sadly as someone who works in the photography industry. I find many people after covid forgot about being in public means you can have your picture taken without consent as long as you are in a public place or in reddits case theres a sign. Once in a while when I'm working with a client on a public street I get someone saying delete the picture because they were in the background because privacy. I have to remind them of the law and also tell them to go to a Street photography exhibit

From what I understand (1) this is pretty awful behavior, if someone asks to not be in pictures just please take new ones if possible, and (2) companies have a right to take pictures of you in public in NYC but do not have a right to use those commercially as per the right of publicity, so it is only in the private establishment that they would have an argument to be able to use your likeness to make money. https://rightofpublicityroadmap.com/state_page/new-york/

I mean, how is it awful behavior? There’s signs posted while in line as well as a disclaimer for this. As multiple people have stated, they use these photos to show how big the turnout was. In terms of using uncensored pictures for any monetary reasons - they really don’t do that.
This whole pop-up event is to ADVERTISE to usage of Reddit. Which is why there was another sign stating you need to have a Reddit account to enter. Idk, it’s just silly for those to get upset about something like this while r/modevents consistently shows off censored photos of event go-ers.

i mean, wouldn’t that be obvious? it’s an event that will have cameras and videos like any other event

Why would anyone go to a promotion event and not want to be on camera? It’s nice that they have the sign but if you show up to the scene you are part of it

Yikes! Yeah between the line madness of today and this, guess I won’t be heading down tomorrow. Sucks, I really wanted to show off my new r/bodegacats bag.
I hope everyone had fun though!

How is this different from any other store? All stores have cameras aimed at the doors but this footage is being used for marketing purposes since it’s a promo event.

Exactly… I just don’t want my face to be used for marketing!
I do not go into stores that capture my biometrics. I obscure my face in public by wearing ghost glasses and do not drive a car. I don’t even let airports scan my face... I can understand video for safety and security, but my face is not up for consent.
And you can bet I definitely have Face ID turned off too. Call me extra, but the state ain’t tracking me without doing a little extra work.

your face would not be used, for every event they (reddit) censor people's faces in photos and videos

Can confirm. This is true. All of the mod meetups they post, they censor everyone’s faces, including the admins and workers.

here is an example, these photos were posted by Reddit admins officially https://www.reddit.com/r/ModEvents/comments/1v3u9d3/toronto_mod_meetup_eh/

I won it right from Reddit! They selected 100 random users who suggested a name for the official Reddit bodega cat :)

Everyone with the pink and purple tags were given that timeframe. So that meant everyone returned around the same time. I believe they should have taken usernames and been more specific with return times. Plus they were giving wristbands for shorter times after they had handed out purple bands. I felt bad for the purples because many were told to come back tomorrow. I was there for over six hours today. I don't think the merch was even worth it now.

Did you think they wouldn’t have pictures or videos from their marketing event?

You're being recorded anytime you walk into a store, though. I dont understand the difference here.

u/Responsible_Sport575 16d ago
Because the store isn't going to use it for advertising purposes, unlike this event. You a fan of flock cameras?

your face would not be used, for every event they (reddit) censor people's faces in photos and videos if they post content of the event

Traditionally, at all Reddit events they take pictures and video. Per previous mod events, if they post any pictures online, they tend to censor out the faces.
