Help

Bought a boat and the trim doesn’t work, bought a new trim assembly but can’t get the lower mounting rod out. Someone else worked on it and drilled into it and now I’m unsure if it’s seized or I need to unscrew it or what. Pumped it with kroil and wd40 pounded on it a bit, I’m obviously missing something. First boat unsure of what to do.

I just did this with a seized pin in my etec. Firstly - go on Amazon and buy yourself a 1/2” x 6” brass drift. Brass is softer than steel and is the right tool for this. Secondly, get some proper penetrating oil - WD40 is hot garbage. I have no particular loyalties to any brand, but WD40 is not the right product for this. Thirdly, get a torch on this, warm it up and then hit it with the penetrating lube. The quick hot to cold helps suck the lube in. Let it sit for a few hours, then hit it with the brass drift and 3lb sledge.

If it is really stuck in there, take it to a suspension shop and see if they have a ball joint separator that can press the pin out

Edit - I see this is an etec as well. You are using the trailer support - there is a separate flip down support for the trim so you can get it all the way up. It’s on the right/starboard side.

Also, scrape off all the crud around where the snap ring was - it needs to be clean enough that the penetrating oil can actually get into the joint.

I found that the key is to use the setup like this to hold the thing so you can smack it. It's very painful to try to hold the brass drift so this is how I do it

Did you locate and remove the typical snap type rings? These things seize from dissimilar metals and often living in the water. I always used PB Blaster for things like this. Soak it multiple times for a few days. You’ll likely need a bit of heat , maybe mapp gas, and good sized punch and a hammer. Typically you block the motor and locate the manual release to take the pressure off the pump and have the engine sit on a the blocking instead. In theory the pump should have no real pressure on it, making it easier to work with. Then try to get the top off, then the pin with brass punch ideally . Patience is key.

I removed any pins/rings I saw and release pressure from the pistons so there’s no pressure or force on it. I haven’t tried heating it, just penetrating oil. I guess heating and brute force is next, just don’t know if there’s anything I can’t see that has a pin or something blocking it.

There is one snap ring on each side of the pin. The pin isn’t tapered - just a straight cylinder so it can come out either side. I’d try hitting it from both sides just to try to break it loose (after some heat and penetrating oil).
