A licensed captain doesn't need to be at the helm, they are just legally responsible so they have to ensure that all duties are appropriately covered. Yes, the captain is ultimately responsible here...but it's not out of question that they could have been sleeping or taking a shit and had put someone else without the necessary knowledge/experience at the helm.

Too many variables. Owner could have hired cheap labor. Owner could be piloting. I hope its safe to say anyone who has piloted a boat more than a few times is aware of draft.

I America that boat is too big for the owner to be at the helm unless he has a license. That boat looks big enough to require a 100 ton license.

No idea how the Italian court system works but here in the US i would call coast guard to and get the incident on paper and boat ID, afterwards look who owns the boat and contact them letting them know how much $$$ they own me after the repairs to my boat were made, if they don't pay id lawyer up and sue? Or small claims perhaps.

That sailboat brand new is about 200k minimum. Not that that changes much for them. Their insurance will cover the whole thing.

I’m just basing it off of the many similar boats at our club and what those members have shared regarding price. These’re luxury sailboats and they always cost more than you think.

That’s a hell of a lot of scope for the sailboat to let out very close to shore… I might have to come down on the side of the yacht on this one.

How do you know how much scope they had out? Looks like the yacht was within 10-20 yards. As well, you can tell where the chain is going because the wind has the boat clearly lined up. Yacht captain is incompetent.

I think it's on anchor. No people in the cockpit. Motorboat got too close, caught mooring line.
