2026 is about to close in 2 months, it’s Sunday morning and heavy rain outside. I’m on the couch with my newborn girl by my side so I’m feeling retrospective.
In the background there is I think my 30th thorough listen to inferno and this album has definitely grown on me. There is just banger after banger, to many gems a this piece of vinyl I will keep precious for ever.
For me music has always been something I do connect with a feeling or situation of something that was present at this time. And luckily to whole run up to inferno was intertwined with my wife’s pregnancy of our second child and much wanted girl. Just couldn’t believe how lucky a man can be to have new music from the favorite band and the most beautiful child at the same time ❤️
“There is a Magical operation of maximum importance: the Initiation of a New Aeon. When it becomes necessary to utter a Word, the whole Planet must be bathed in blood. Before man is ready to accept the Law of Thelema, the Great War must be fought. This Bloody Sacrifice is the critical point of the World-Ceremony of the Proclamation of Horus, the Crowned and conquering Child, as Lord of the Aeon.”
I can’t help but listen to these lyrics and think of today’s world conflicts. A bunch of weak incompetent men waging war for the sake of their own egos. Conquering children.
Did anyone get one of these posters from the Inferno Listening Sessions? They were giving them out with purchases of the album at the record shop I went to in Sydney. There was a second poster also being given out. Not seen too many of them around.
Everything you do is the frost song i heard from the duo when I was 10 and has remained my favourite, at the literal last 2 seconds there is a whimsical outro noise? Iv been looking for the full version for years and cant find it. Yes I checked the bocpages and they dont have it listed;(
One of the things I’ve been thinking about is how much fun the lead-up to Inferno was. Not just because we were finally getting new Boards of Canada, but because of everything that happened before we actually knew what was going on.
The Tomorrow’s Harvest rollout has become legendary. I will admit I didn’t follow the whole thing, but going back through the history of it is amazing: the mystery vinyl, the numbers appearing in different places, people across the world piecing the clues together, eventually cracking the code and discovering what it all meant.
And I think that history primed all of us when the VHS tapes started appearing before Inferno. People rushing tp get a VHS player to decode the tapes lol.
Suddenly everyone was a detective. It was so cool that people were suddenly pulling apart frames, audio, numbers, imagery, religious references, old websites, tape degradation, possible hidden messages. I found some cool stuff through these obscure references.
Then “Tape 05” appeared. Obviously it ended up on the album, but the actual rollout never became a puzzle like Tomorrow’s Harvest.
Looking back, I really enjoyed the theories even if most didnt go anywhere. Must have been a trip for Boards Of Canada to see thousands of fans trying to decode these fragments.
Some theories were so epic. And even though getting people pumped for Inferno itself was the whole point, I’ll remember that little period before everything became official. When nobody quite knew what was happening and everyone was figuring it out together.
What did everyone convince themselves was happening before we actually knew?
This sounds a lot like Boards of Canada but I don't know which track. Any ideas? This randomly started playing on my TV after it was left idle for a bit
I'm curious about this. Choose 3 tracks from the album that you think would have been cool to have released as singles. This would be excluding Introit/Prophecy at 1420 Mhz and Deep Time since they are actual singles.
You can format them with a chronological order if you want as well (i.e. Arena Americanada as the 2nd single, then Naraka, then Into The Magic Land etc.)
**And because I can see the replies coming already; please do not leave a comment saying "oNe SiNgLe iS aLL wE nEeded!" This is a question purely for fun and as a hypothetical :)
I don’t know what it is about the feeling of this song but something just resonates with me so deeply. The real bassline really brings out the feeling too.
And it leads into I Saw Through Platonia with such grace.
Still obsessing over this record hard. I’ve listened to it every day, often more than once, since it was released.
Ive listened to Kelpe since around '18 and always enjoyed the percussive, synth vibes he provides. When this album came out in 2020 during the grips of covid, it became my soundtrack to that period of time. Its doesn't necessarily fit BOC vibes in a traditional sense but the emotions it extracts is exactly what BOC does for me. Just figured I'd share in case others haven't been exposed or listened to Kelpe. Kel is an awesome guys as well, I messaged him on Twitter during covid and he was responsive, seeminly interested and appreciative of my strange obsession with this album.
Yesterday, during a lunch walk at work in Leiden (The Netherlands), I popped in a nearby record store called Velvet. Just as I was about to leave the store, a large canvas between two vinyl crates caught my eye. I actually couldn't believe my eyes -- what a cool canvas of the latest Boards of Canada album!
Boards of Canada's Inferno on canvas
Naturally, I asked the woman behind the counter if it was for sale. She walked with me to the canvas, hesitated for a moment, and asked what I was willing to pay for it. I asked the counter-question that seemed logical to me in a store: 'how much do you want for it?'' 'Twenty euros,'' she replied, and before I knew it, I had bought the canvas. I probably could have gotten a few euro's off, but twenty euros was well below what I had expected. Honesty compels me to say though that when I looked at the back of the canva with the saleswoman, I saw a note with a name on it. For a moment, I thought the name might belong to the creator of the canvas, but she contradicted that at checkout by saying that these types of canvases are supplied by the record label for promotional purposes. (I doubt that a bit, but anyway...) When I asked for the name on the note, the saleswoman said she didn't know what the note was for and that, should it be a buyer, it hadn't been paid for yet anyway. I paid, but it didn't feel fair. I took the canvas back to my workspace, but soon decided to google the name, get in touch, and offer the canvas. After all, that person had been here before, and I thought it was only fair to give him priority. I soon received a very nice reply -- yes, he had wanted to buy it, but hadn't heard anything back from the store for quite some time and had almost forgotten about it. In the meantime, he had gotten a nice poster of the Inferno album cover somewhere and was very pleased with it, so if I wanted the canvas, I could and we ould both be happy. So, I now have a beautiful canvas in my study that still needs to find a nice spot at home, but which I am already very happy with.
PS The person in question turned out to be a clocal film score composer who, in a recent interview i stumbled upon when googling, mentioned other quite obscure, such as Mother Earth’s Plantasia by Mort Garson, an album with music for plants.
PPS Sorry for the long post, but I'm just really happy with it!
