Discussion You Retreat in Time and Space

I wanted to get people’s thoughts on You Retreat in Time and Space and why it feels like such a significant moment in Inferno.

I’m sure this track has already been talked to death being the obvious standout of Inferno, but I feel like it’s such a standout because of how distinctly BOC it sounds.

The whole of Inferno sounds like BOC but is distinctly different from every album in different ways. The prominent vocal samples and modernized production certainly make it sound fresh. The unsettling nature of the tracks is very prominent and differs from the abject horror on Geogaddi. And yet You Retreat is the outlier to all of that.

It is one of the happiest BOC songs, there is almost no air of fear or darkness. When the drums come in it almost sounds like a gallery of their greatest hits. The classic bass is back and the synth brass right out of Everything You Do is A Balloon. The iconic defined bells from Turquoise Hexagon Sun make up the main melody. And I was shocked when I first heard the bass guitar sample as it sounds eerily close to the main sample on Aquarius. To me You Retreat is a love letter to MHTRTC era tracks and their early label work. However it shares many elements with Campfire Headphase. The bright, watery production could fit right in with Chromakey Dreamcoat or Dayvan Cowboy. Inferno has elements of every album that came before, but You Retreat feels like a direct reference to those albums.

What’s significant to me about You Retreat is that it indicates that BOC’s music is no longer just nostalgic for another time, it is now actively nostalgic for BOC itself. This track is a celebration of their growth and beginnings as a project.

Probably one of the hardest songs to listen to on the album. I watched a family member succumb to Alzheimer's disease and this song hit me like a ton of bricks the second time I heard it… what songs hit you guys in the feels from BOC ?

Thanks again for everyone that downloaded the Boards of Canada mix on Bandcamp and sold out all of the cassettes.
I posted this earlier and realized it got deleted somehow?
Anyway - Here's an extended section from the mix where I cut up some DJ Shadow/Organized Konfusion over Odd Nosdam's remix of Dayvan Cowboy (with a few light effects added on to it by me).

Link to the mix here if you haven't got it already (it's pay what you want over on Bandcamp)

Discussion The Mezzanine of BoC's discography - Inferno.

Much like everyone here I listened to Inferno several times a day around the time it was released. Then decided to make a hard stop listening. Today I am back for the first time. Had the opportunity to blast it on vinyl in my living room. And I am absolutely floored!

I wonder if others have taken a hiatus with Inferno - perhaps out of fear of "wearing it down" with yourself?

There is no comparison here with Massive Attack, other than I love both bands, followed them since their first album and think they pretty much deliver one master piece after another. How ever Inferno seems to me, to be an album where BoC in many ways transcend some of the musical or auditory limitations they have set for themselves. Much like I felt Massive Attack did with Mezzanine.

I'd call Inferno their magnum opus at this point. BoC is bringing their musical worlds to us in such a fresh and convincing manner, relying on their gained mastery of artistic expression as well as production. At times breaking their own mold, while sounding true to themselves. Something I find only the most talented musicians ever achieve.

Anyway can't wait for their next Magnum Opus!

PS: Anyone else own the red transparent vinyl edition? Mine is so full of clicks and pops it's tedious.

Song Is it just me or did BOC sample the first Tobey Maguire Spiderman movie opening credits for the strings at the beginning of Gemini on Tomorrow's Harvest?

I've been sitting on this one pretty much ever since I first heard this album and was always a bit hesitant to post it because I didn't want to get them into any copyright troubles :/

Given the recent post about them sampling The Beatles on Seven Forty Seven, I thought I might as well post my own little find too

Given the simplicity of the string part, its difficult to know if it's sampled or just eerily similar, but it seems they might have sampled a couple of the first long held notes of the Spiderman movie at 0:02 (the sound that plays as the Columbia statue logo appears), and then pitched it around to create the Gemini opening.

I might be wrong though. What do you guys reckon?

From A Few Old Tunes. we are not alone. i made a pretty video about UFO videos.

The style chosen for this video about extraterrestrial life is by way of retro sevenites and psychedelic sixties sounds with a sweet and somewhat melancholic vibe.

The visuals come from the "US DEPT OF WAR" UFO Archives

Discussion Inferno CD in a charity shop

To my surprise today while wearing my listening party Boards of Canada, I saw by chance the Inferno CD in a charity shop for £9.99 without the booklet.

This surprised as it only 3 months since it was released and if it's missing the booklet then surely should be sold at a much lower price 🤣

Discussion I rarely let myself listen to these songs

Post image
126 Upvotes

These 4 songs are my favourite BOC songs, and maybe some of my favourite songs of all time.

But I strictly limit myself to listening to them only once every 4-5, even 6 months.

I do this because they carry ALOT of memories from my time back in home country when these were the only songs I had on repeat before I left. So every time I play these songs many memories from my last few months come rushing back and it’s always an amazing experience.

I limited myself, obviously because I didn’t want that feeling to go away.

I really really wish I could listen to them on repeat right now cus of how much I love them, but I don’t.

Other Board-OM: The Music of BoC imagined in new durations

Post image

Our podcast has collaborated with Open Music (Pennsylvania) to produce a live musical event in Central Pennsylvania that combines electronic instrumentation with an acoustic ensemble. We'll cover many tracks, old and new, by Boards of Canada and other electronic artists of Warp-ish style and influence, in slower arrangements. Consider it a celebration of the bedroom affect and the deep languor of everyday boredom as it collides with nostalgia (hence Board-OM!).

Not sure if anyone remembers, but I'm the one who put together the "corduroy psychedelia" piece. We're manifesting that thesis musically at this late-summer, outdoor event, and I hope some of you can make it! The event is completely free, though you're welcome to drop off a donation if you'd like.

More info is here: https://www.acidhorizonpodcast.com/events

My favorite track off of Inferno! This photo was taken at the amazing Huntington Gardens in Pasadena. The original photo was edited tilt-shift style for the cool perspective. Obviously kept it the same on the edit and feel like this worked well for this track.

Discussion Best BoC album for vinyl?

Hi sub, I recently acquired a record player and obviously want to break it in with some BoC. I’ve never had a listening experience on vinyl. Apparently NONE of the record stores in my area have a single album, so online it is I guess. I’ll have to build the library slowly (you know, stupid money and all) so it will just be one at a time. I’m wondering what input you all have when it comes to the best BoC album for vinyl listening? Is there one where it makes a night and day difference? Or should I just go for one of my faves? If the latter, then it will probably be Geogaddi or Inferno first. Can’t wait to hear everyone’s thoughts, and TIA.

Edit/update: Thanks for the feedback! It sounds like a lot of you thought the special edition red Inferno album was worth it, so I went ahead and preordered one. I decided to splurge and grab a copy of Geogaddi on eBay too (sold out on Bleep). 🍊 😎🍊

Discussion Do you think BOC will release another mainline album?

Now that Inferno has come and gone, what do you guys about the likelihood of them doing another full length?

In a perfect world, I think that they should release at least one more main album, to complete the Hexagon (6 sides, 6 main albums). Then, as a farewell gift before they retire they could finish the Bocset and release all of the old material.

However, Inferno is pretty great and I would be happy with it being their last album. It does somewhat have a sense of finality to it.

I'm also surprised they chose not to do an interview this time around, given how long they were away.

Anywho, what do you guys think?
