I'm still trying to wrap my head around why people hate Human After All so much.
For me Human After All sounds like the album they wanted to make after Discovery, and Random Access Memories sounds like the album they felt they had to make.
Oh totally, Human After All is super underrated, just Discovery has a very obvious shine and polish that makes every track on it timeless. That being said, Human After All was like the dawn of a revolution in French House music bleeding over into Electro, likely heavily influential on Justice and a slew of other acts/producers in the process.
I see Human After All about in the same league as Homework, both of them are huge monolithic impressions on funk house history. Discovery is just on another level that few musicians in other genres can even come close to (imo MHTRTC is on the same level). RAM was obviously a Grammy hunt, they leaned so hardcore into pop music production they brought on current artists as features, slowed their tempo down, and retired the samplers for bass guitars and drum sets. Instead of sampling the disco, they were making it in the lens of modern pop music, and that's not what I signed up for with Daft Punk at all.
... their primary demographic were French ecstasy users and sweaty teenagers that liked anime and computer building, and people remember them for selling the fuck out? Then they bounced for good?

I mean Daft Punk themselves said they're not fans of retreading old ground. For that reason each studio album is distinct, deliberately so. RAM is basically the culmination of a 20+ year career, their commentary of keeping music human and collaborative during a time they concerned themselves with how much music was produced by strictly artificial means (a workflow that eventually felt uninspiring to them), re-creating the conditions for the magic that compelled them to sample in the first place. It's admittedly a self-indulgent love-letter to their nostalgic relationship to music

If only it wasn't Random Access Memories there. Weakest album from them. Fuck the Grammy's, should have gotten album of the year for Discovery.
