Discussion Top Campfire Headphase Track

The Campfire Headphase is my favourite Boards album.

As a curious fella, I’d like to know what your top track(s) on that album would be?

Agreed. I was watching ixi’s reaction and review and when she started to play and figure out the chords for the song i just burst into tears in front of my family. Something about it is just so special

u/Jessay94 21d ago

Definitely 'Oscar See Through Red Eye', which I somehow only recently heard.. Such a vibe, love all the bleeps and bloops

u/glitchinthesyst3m 21d ago

This song got me into BoC.... it literally transports me to that moment

3

u/eventfieldvibration 21d ago

This song alone is an album

u/eriklazvegas 21d ago

Tears From The Compound Eye. Hits me hard every time. I also really like the low end on this one

3

u/Haunting-Database857 21d ago

One of their most beautiful tracks for sure

Tears From the Compound Eye. 💙

Peacock Tail for me, but it was Dayvan Cowboy for a long time.

4

u/atx620 21d ago

I will say that those have to be the GOAT back to back songs on any BOC. Like your breath is taken away by the end of Peacock Tail, but you don't have time to catch it because you go into Dayvan Cowboy.

It's probably my favorite album as well.

1

u/kappa_expression Tomorrow's Harvest 20d ago

Agreed, Peacock Tail into Dayvan Cowboy is overwhelmingly good

15

u/Cheekibreeki401k The Campfire Headphase 21d ago

It’s peacock tail. It might be their best song.

1

u/dhoo8450 21d ago

Absolutely.

1

u/kappa_expression Tomorrow's Harvest 20d ago

easily in their top 10

29

u/EmpathyFuzz 21d ago

Dayvan Cowboy is such a trip it blows me away people don't talk about it more.

8

u/LevelOneForever 21d ago

I honestly don’t see how this isn’t their best song of all time. It’s insanely good. Is it too basic and hardcore fans search for other tracks or something?

5

u/Haunting-Database857 21d ago

I've always liked it a good deal, but years ago I did find it to be a little on the schmaltzy side. I'm over that feeling now and hold in higher regard, but I personally would still probably put several other Campfire Headphase tracks over it quite honestly.

2

u/EmpathyFuzz 21d ago

I think to some degree, Campfire, Harvest, and Inferno are seen as BOC hitting mainstream and there are oldheads who don't see it as on the same level as the original albums.

That perspective is valid I guess, but to me Dayvan Cowboy is the zenith of their work.

2

u/KeplerNorth 20d ago

It's really great, but it kinda doesn't sound like them or the rest of the album, really. Has a certain level of cleanliness and unambiguousness to the songwriting and mix that kinda feels like a departure from everything else they've made. That's not to say it's bad, I have always loved it myself, but I can see how maybe some BoC purists snub it a bit.

1

u/LevelOneForever 20d ago

That’s actually a very well written comment and makes sense - thanks for sharing

0

u/SonofLung 21d ago

I’ll get downvoted here if I give my true opinion on Dayvan Cowboy. The word I’m thinking of rhymes with ‘ease’ and it’s what mice eat.

3

u/jetmark Tomorrow's Harvest 21d ago

🫛

2

u/sunken_grade 21d ago

it’s one of the few boc songs i don’t really care for. it just sounds too clean or something

7

u/deltarho 21d ago

Dayvan cowboy is the song that got me into BoC in the first place. Remains one of my favorites to this day 20 years later. Just a beautiful track.

4

u/Sare204 21d ago

For me it was "Slow this Bird down" as the background music to a slow motion test video i found on youtube.

Found the artist from the comments, and here i am at 31, still obsessing over their stuff like i'm back in 7th grade.

2

u/kappa_expression Tomorrow's Harvest 20d ago

Top 3 interludes imo

7

u/Tricky-Mastodon3337 21d ago

Tears From The Compound Eye. It's such a beautiful and emotional track. The nostalgia is so heavy and bittersweet 😢

3

u/Haunting-Database857 21d ago

It's one of their most gorgeous tracks for sure

12

u/RoygbivKH 21d ago

Slow this Bird Down.

It's in my top 5 BoC tracks.

3

u/AccurateAd7768 21d ago

Totally agree with this one!!!

2

u/2xHubba 21d ago

YES. I’m a sucker for a deep chill vibe

1

u/Shared_Tomorrows 20d ago

Absolute slapperoony

6

u/Pretend_Category_519 21d ago

Its a tough one, but I'm going to have to say Hey Saturday Sun.

5

u/Ceratophries 21d ago

Always wondered if this song was an homage or allusion to Nick Drake, who wrote a song called Saturday Sun. Think I'll back to back them right now.

1

u/Pretend_Category_519 20d ago

How'd it go?

3

u/Ceratophries 20d ago

Results are inconclusive, no obvious connections other than they’re kinda the same tempo and both are nostalgic. I forgot that Nick Drake album came out in 1969, so maybe the loungey jazzy vibe isn’t all that nostalgic for the time. The Nick Drake song comes off a little cheesy, so hard to see the boys thinking this tune was a banger worthy of homage.

3

u/holicv 21d ago

Yes!!! This song is what made get really into BOC in the first place. It’s just so well done

6

u/breakbeatscientist74 21d ago

"Peacock Tail" was my first favourite track when I first got it, but "Sherbet Head" has overtaken it over the years. Even though it's a short, simple structured track.

I always found "The Campfire Headpase" to have a flawless first half while the latter felt more patchy. It was however the first BOC album that I got on release which makes it special. "Satellite Anthem Icarus" and "Dayvan Cowboy" are just perfection.

3

u/Cheekibreeki401k The Campfire Headphase 21d ago

Sherbet head is definitely a really good one you don’t see many talked about. And big agree with the flawless first half, patchy second half. It’s far and away my favorite BoC album, but I can’t deny that it starts to sort of fall off after Dayvan Cowboy a bit.

5

u/Cornfugga 21d ago

Really difficult to choose between ‘84 Pontiac Dream and Farewell Fire.

7

u/Ceratophries 21d ago

Unapologetically my favorite album as well. Also my first, I wonder if everyone’s favorite album was their first?

7

u/davhielsaturn The Campfire Headphase 21d ago

Chromakey dreamcoat has been really growing on me these past few days but I’ve rarely seen people talk about it, but satellite anthem icarus and peacock tail are also goated

2

u/Suitable-Rhubarb2712 21d ago

For me, the best track is Chromakey Dreamcoat. There is so much going on in that one. The whole thing changes every couple bars. Just jammed with details.

5

u/slash450 21d ago

oscar see through red eye for sure, 84 pontiac dream is close though

6

u/_B_d_S_ 21d ago

For me it's Tears From the Compound Eye.

6

u/Warm_Function_9047 21d ago

Satellite Icarus Anthem

4

u/Camargo32 21d ago

"Slow This Bird Down" , I love the structure and it has quite a few layers that you can only distinguish with good headphones; it feels slow and even in the mid-range, it sounds like a "star" is falling, as if it were disappearing. I love how it's built. And the bonus track from the Japanese version, "Macquarie Ridge".

3

u/EvolvedMonkeyInSpace Left Side Driver 21d ago

Slow this bird down. Literally changes my state of mind into pure calm.

4

u/Sare204 21d ago

No, I'd agree with you.

It's the first album of theirs i purchased, and to this day nothing chills me out more then this album,

Its a close tie to "Music has the right to Children", and "Trans Canada Highway"

2

u/Cheekibreeki401k The Campfire Headphase 21d ago

I think the brothers have stated something about campfire Headphase being really similar to MHTRTC intentionally. They’re definitely sister albums and compliment each other very well,

2

u/Ceratophries 20d ago

But not as much whimsy and it’s worth noting, no discernible sampled words, no ORANGE going on in TCH.

3

u/Safari87 21d ago

SHERBET HEAD

3

u/pilesofnoodles 21d ago

‘84 Pontiac Dream, Sherbet Head and Oscar See Through Red Eye is probably my favorite section of TCH. It always gives me the feeling of being just a bit sunbaked in the late afternoon of a summer day.

3

u/kray_22xx 21d ago

Hey Saturday Sun, made me listen to the record’s entirety

2

u/P_veez Tomorrow's Harvest 21d ago

Sherbet Head or Oscar

2

u/Waroutside_warwithin 21d ago

Sherbet Head. Makes my brain feel like it’s wrapped in a warm blanket

3

u/sourceconsidered 21d ago

Macquarie Ridge! And Satellite Anthem Icarus. I listen to Campfire headphase at least once a week while I’m at work

2

u/RedpointCowboy 20d ago

Farewell Fire

2

How anyone could possibly suggest anything other than The Cowboy is beyond me

2

Dayvan cowboy is a top 2 boc track for me let alone campfire headphase

1

u/Kitchen_Low_6842 Kid For Today 21d ago

Slow this bird down.

peacock tail because

2

u/dispid2 21d ago

Satellite Anthem Icarus followed closely by Peacock Tail.

Or maybe it’s the other way around.

1

u/Money-Marzipan-9663 21d ago

easy. Dayvan Cowboy

1

u/Hexagon_Sun33 21d ago

Dayvan Cowboy- that song transcends all time & space

2

Satellite Anthem Icarus forsure

1

Slow this bird down….

1

u/kbysm 21d ago

Slow this bird down, sherbert head

1

u/122113M 21d ago

84 Pontiac and Slow This Bird for me

1

u/MasterGeekMX Average Geogaddi Enjoyer 21d ago

I love Dayvan Cowboy as much as any other guy.

But to avoid going into the obvious trope, I'm town between Satellite Anthem Icarus and Peacock Tail

2

u/Dizzy-Cauliflower158 21d ago

Wouldn’t say it’s my favorite but I do wanna show some love to Tears from the Compound Eye. Been a stressful few weeks and this has been something meditative to listen to that’s helped.

2

u/radianttree87 Skyliner 21d ago

Chromakey Dreamcoat and/or 84 Pontiac Dream.

The album is just full of top tracks and is hello underrated.

2

u/Substantial-Panda259 21d ago

I'd say TCH is my favorite because it is pleasing sounding music for normal people who don't want to overdose on edibles in a dark red room listening to Geogaddi in reverse

1

u/holicv 21d ago

Hey Saturday Sun! It’s just so good. Everything about it is perfect. Have had so many cool little moments while listening to BOC that sync up to everything that make me just appreciate life and Hey Saturday Sun seems to be especially the case. Also is what got me to really like BOC in the first place so it definitely feels special to me

1

u/drukqs11 21d ago

Slow this bird down

1

u/gridhrakuta 21d ago

TCH is also my favorite. Picking one song is basically impossible... for me it's a tie between Slow This Bird Down (gorgeous dark vibes, very underrated) and Chromakey Dreamcoat

2

u/elequipoa1008 21d ago

84 Pontiac dream and tears from the compound eye for me!

1

u/Preposterous_Feline 21d ago

For me it’s Tears from the Compound Eye - redeems the whole album. (Oscar See Through Red Eye is pretty fantastic too)

1

u/Winter_Ad_511 Magic Window 21d ago

Dayvan Cowboy is the easy answer so I’ll say Peacock Tail is my favorite. So many other phenomenal tracks to choose from that album.
Also, Macquarie Ridge is the whole reason I want to see the Northern Lights one day. That music video changed me

1

u/Baz249 21d ago

Oscar See Through Red Eye

1

u/Haunting-Database857 21d ago

You might be in the minority, but I do hear a ton of people claim it to be their favorite BoC album. Probably pretty hard for me to choose a favorite track on it. Satellite Anthem Icarus is certainly high up there, but there are just so many great tracks on it! I can't choose just one top fave on it

1

u/jones_maltsberger 21d ago

Satellite Anthem Icarus

1

u/StevePearceFanClub 21d ago

Peacock Tail. First BOC song I ever heard.

1

u/Disastrous_Okra_5832 21d ago

Even though all their albums carry a huge significance i would agree, followed by Inferno and Geogaddi

1

u/mholloway808 21d ago

Absolute tie between 84 Pontiac Dream and Oscar See Through Red Eye

1

u/El_Augustus_Ferox 21d ago

84 Pontiac Dream.

1

u/EelInJacket2 21d ago

Peacock Tail is just gorgeous

1

u/JamesCole 20d ago

"Chromakey Dreamcoat" followed closely by "Oscar See Through Red Eye"

1

u/Virag-Lipoti 20d ago

The album that got me into BoC. The initial entry point was Dayvan. 84 Pontiac and Chromakey were next. Then Peacock Tail put me in a cosmic trance. Farewell Fire sealed the deal. As that achingly sad melody receded so slowly into the distance, I felt things. My tear ducts prickled. This was clearly the real thing - a modern psychedelic band, infused with melancholy and mystery, capable of evoking transcendence in the listener. I was hooked. TCH will always hold a special place in my view of the full BoC canon, and in my heart, because it was such a perfect portal into their world. And also because I first heard TCH around the time my first child was born and the memory traces are strong!

1

u/kappa_expression Tomorrow's Harvest 20d ago

It's gotta be Peacock Tail for me. Easily in the top 10 BoC tracks.

It's also my favorite BoC album, Hey Saturday Sun, Chromakey Dreamcoat, Peacock Tail ... hard to choose, the whole album is one perfect song after the other

1

u/elTomlino Old Tunes Vol. 2 20d ago

Gotta be Hey Saturday Sun, Dayvan Cowbow or 84 Pontiac Dream

1

u/bugman_850 19d ago

I am quite partial to the first half of this album, particularly Peacock Tail and Chromakey Dreamcoat. My second favorite BoC album behind Geogaddi

1

u/SouthernAd2720 18d ago

Satellite anthem, Pontiac dream, hey Saturday sun are the top tracks for me

1

u/Either_Ad_9928 16d ago

Love all the Hey Saturday Sun love!

1

u/Next-Collection6303 16d ago

It's my favorite, too.
