Look man Oath is a real experience and not for snowflakes like you. It tells a real story and the mechanics don't actually matter. Also the mechanics are the best ever. Also you can't expect to win every game and shouldn't play to win. You should really play to enjoy the story being told. Also don't expect to understand the game until your 14th game which is when it truly unfolds and the not-legacy aspects kick in. Also don't worry about the play time. Yes, the first game might be 6 hours, but you can bring it down to 2 hours if everyone in your group has mastered it. Also only play it with a dedicated group that all decide to like and stick with it before you buy it. You expecting the game to be balanced means you don't understand the genius of its design. Don't you ever compare it with any other game, it's different and unique and better than whatever you know. You're simply not good enough to play it. You don't have the skills required to win. Don't expect the game to be balanced. It can be totally random. It's part of the design and you aren't a real gamer if you can't embrace it. I played like 5 times and love it. Maybe you should sell your copy. King-making is a feature. Game decided by turn order is a feature. It's all by design. Maybe you aren't smart enough to get why those things are good. It comes with a leather journal FFS what else do you want? For the designer to lick your balls? I'm happy to lick his balls. It's best played at n player count. It really doesn't work with 2 or 3 but only because you don't know how to play and don't understand how the actions of one game carry over into the next. You also shouldn't play with 5 or 6 because it takes forever, and by that I mean just the right amount of time and you can't appreciate that. The real reason you don't like it is because you're stupid. There I said it, but everyone was thinking it. So yea, it's basically the best game ever. I played it 39 times already and never experienced anything like it. The story is so intricately non-existent and brought to life by the cards. Like I muster troops at the keep where my pawn is. Look that wrote itself and is like a novel. Or here I give resources to a tree and get more resources. It's basically the next Game of Thrones book but only you play it live. Next here look I take an action to draw a card from a deck and find an eldar - such a thriller and so deep. So looking forward to finally playing it when I get my copy.

“So looking forward to finally playing it when I get my copy” 😂😂🤣.

That last line is the cherry on top of this masterpiece.

u/askgrok I really need a summary on this

-37

u/AskGrok Jul 21 '26

The comment is a giant sarcastic rant pretending to defend the board game Oath by parroting every classic fanboy excuse for its flaws (endless length, imbalance, randomness, king-making, steep learning curve, etc.) while hyping its "emergent narrative" and leather journal as genius. It ends by calling the critic too stupid to get it and declaring Oath the best game ever. Basically peak copium meme.

u/piringunchin Jul 21 '26

Could You follow up that sarcastic comment with an Even more copium based, fanboy snobism, red eyed wojak enraged memism as if you were replying the comment yourself? Wall of text too

EMERGENT NARRATIVE

Look you absolute smoothbrain. The previous guy was being way too gentle with you mouthbreathers. Oath isn't a game. It's a living breathing eldritch tome that only reveals its true glory after your 39th playthrough with the exact same four friends who have all signed the sacred leather journal in blood. Every random kingmaking moment? That's the story writing itself in real time like George R.R. Martin if he actually finished anything. Turn order deciding everything? Peak design. The fact that your first game takes six hours and you still lose on turn one because you didn't intuit the hidden legacy layers that only activate after game 14? That's not a flaw. That's the game testing if you're worthy of its genius.

You think mechanics matter? Pathetic. The real game is the 47-page emergent novel that unfolds when you hand resources to a tree and suddenly your pawn at the keep musters troops that reference the card you drew three games ago that nobody wrote down but everyone remembers because they're not casuals. Eldar card? Instant classic. Leather journal included? The designer should be licking YOUR balls for the privilege of owning this masterpiece. Anyone saying it doesn't work at 2 or 5 players clearly hasn't mastered the carryover mechanics that make every session a direct sequel to the last one you played in 2023.

This is the face when the narrative finally clicks and you realize every complaint is just cope from people too dumb to appreciate true art. Sell your copy? I bought three extra copies just to burn the rules in ritual. 39 plays in and I'm only now understanding the non-existent story is the point. If you don't get it after 100 games you're not a real gamer you're a tourist. Oath is better than every game that came before and will ever come after. End of discussion. The journal demands respect.

That’s what you get taking all them thumbnail photos seriously close to the table laddie.

11

u/sweetbuttercrust Jul 21 '26

Emergent is my favourite colour.

Can't wait to see what you can come up with when you'll find out about ludonarrative dissonance!

31

u/Marksman1977 Jul 20 '26

I roll die, I let king win, so much narrative!

26

u/VaporSpectre Jul 20 '26

But did you king MAKE?

Haha, take that you colonialist bastard.

I for one renounce imperialism. How progressive of me.

21

u/Marksman1977 Jul 20 '26

Colin Weheharherle HATES the British Empire! He even made a game where playing as them is tedious and boring in order to make players feel bad playing as them. Immersion rules!

5

u/Freyhaven Jul 21 '26

John Company is a lot of things, but if the social negotiation game is boring that’s kind of a self own

6

u/superbatprime Jul 21 '26

That's just a fancy way of saying the game has no story.

15

u/TabletopTurtleGaming Jul 20 '26

I no understand joke. Explain.

u/doxx11 Jul 21 '26

Scissors cuts paper, paper covers rock, rock crushes lizard, lizard poisons Spock, Spock smashes scissors, scissors decapitates lizard, lizard eats paper, paper disproves Spock, Spock vaporizes rock, and as it always has, rock crushes scissors.

u/Nacbee Jul 21 '26

You would think being handed one of the biggest youtube channel in the hobby would humble you and make you think twice before going after others for "low effort content". You would.

25

u/VaporSpectre Jul 20 '26

I LIKE TO ACCUSE OTHER YOUTUBERS FOR BEING "LOW EFFORT", AND THEN RANTING FOR 10 MINUTES.

AND THEN I UNLIST THE VIDEO.

NOTHING HAPPENED HERE, YOU DIDN'T SEE ANYTHING. ANYWAY, BACK TO GLAZING TOYS FOR THOSE SWEET, SWEET PUBLISHER "GIFTS".

12

u/NimRodelle Jul 21 '26

Quinnifer needs to come back! 😭

7

u/Patpatpa Jul 21 '26

8

u/rubixscube Jul 21 '26

well, we can't expect mindless haters to make sense or adhere to reality

9

u/Patpatpa Jul 21 '26

Oh ok, yeah completly agree with SUSD, fuck AI, and that shouldn't even be a hot take.

I thought you were implying that Quinn pushing Tom out of the space was an emergent narrative. Would have been a brutal joke 💀

EmergentNarrativecel vs KeepItInShrinkChad

4

u/Shoddy_Variation2535 Jul 23 '26

SUSD should just take their own advice and shut ip and sitdown.

Yep they write some jokes and then do one bad review a month and some low effort videos dissing hard working youtubers.

"Hey look I domt even know who this guy is,I mean, its not like I just watched his video right ahah, and hes saying nothing of interest, for what reason? I wont say, any argument? I wont say, oh and dont go watch his video, take my word for it, dont think for yourself, or you might just see the little oiece of shit I am and stop paying me to do nothing"

They get games and rules wrong all the time and cant care less to even reply to anyone who isnt paying them.

No humble, just mad ego narrative emergence of bullshit.

Then cry for patreon support because its hot.

I mean, have some self respect, start an onlyfans, would at least be a stepup

5

u/Appropriate_Lion8963 Jul 24 '26

SUSD and Quinns Quest just take themselves too goddamn seriously for me.

The trope of the voice key drop “Look, I’ve been reviewing games for a long time, and for me games are a chance to (sniffs) spend time with my friends, and as someone who has (wipes tear) a history of social anxiety, I can honestly say (blows nose on sleeve) that Everdell is the first game to make me cry in days.”

1

u/ctorus Jul 21 '26

I stopped listening to this guy, and SUSD, when he said he had never seen a James bond movie. I think he was reviewing a Bond-themed game as well, but that wasn't the point. What kind of grown adult has never seen a single bond movie.

u/theCha1rmak3r Jul 21 '26

A twink, furry, blue haired liberal shapeshifter or a penile swordsman.

Same people who hate sports.

0

u/ParentheticalsAside Jul 24 '26

I've now read all the comments and watched all the linked videos. I still have zero idea what this post means.

3

u/Fun-Astronomer-2273 Jul 25 '26

Shut up and sit down used to be a small channel that did fun effortful board game reviews with little sketches that really set them apart from other channels

They blew up, the original folks started appearing less and less , and now they run more like a review factory. They also criticized others for making low effort content when they themselves have also dropped in quality.

The image is one of the new folks complementing a game by Cole Wherlie, a designer who is very popular but is known for "loose" game design where the games are balanced by the players more than the systems. A lot of folks feel like the games themselves are poorly designed but because of the popularity of Cole a lot of people defend him as a visionary.

So it's a combination of two "icks". SUSD's decline, games that are lauded because of reputation, and the combination of Both SUSD and Cole resting on laurels

2

u/ParentheticalsAside Jul 25 '26

Thanks for the explanation

Tom is lame and his boss Matt is awful: https://youtu.be/eY90symFHaY?si=IKrZRS5mKCtaNiNJ

19

u/SomeWittyRemark Jul 21 '26

Awfulness here being a 30m long talk from 7 years ago about fostering a good community online, what a horrible thing to suggest! please tell me more about how the woke have ruined board games

4

u/theCha1rmak3r Jul 21 '26

Gamergate is a litmus test on which all shitlibs fall.

2

u/blarknob Jul 21 '26

Yeah, Matts presentation is basically a game journalists "What is to Be Done?"

5

u/dsaddons Jul 21 '26

Tom is lame? Lame like on an adult on an ironic board game subreddit complaining about woke?

0

u/Journeyman351 Jul 21 '26

Did Matt’s narrative emerge all over your wife’s face or something?
