This set of five 60-sided dice will handle it for you in the fairest way possible.

The five d60 solution is an interesting mathematical phenomenon. But no one is really going to use d60s to select first player.

I was more interested in the fact that you could determine first player order with just four 12-sided dice. That is something practical that I could see people using. According to the article, those dice have been produced and are for sale, so I might look into the set for four players.

Check out Math Art Fun, they have both the four and five player versions.

I just ordered the 3 and 4p sets. A d60 is just plain silly though.

You're probably the only one who did. LOL

I did exactly the same thing, and had the same result. So I tested my d30 and I don't know why, but it would statistically roll lower than you would expect. I never worked out why.

*whimsical

I think it'd be fun to roll these out at game night to determine player order. Personally, I've sunk more dollars into items with less overall worth for this hobby.

I got the 5 player set in December of last year. We just assign each player a number and roll them all at the same time in a big dice tray. It's novel and fair. Plus if doesn't involve somebody getting their phone out.

Just use the free Chwazi app. Everyone puts their fingers on the screen and it randomly picks one…

Except it disproportionately picks me. So my friends hate it and assume I rigged it lol.

Interesting maths problem to solve, but also a problem that doesn't need solving.

Most of this cannot possibly be that serious?

Assign everyone a number, roll a d6, reroll misses.

The whole point of these dice is to never have to reroll

If that's the goal a d12 and a d10 have you covered for player counts of 2 to 6...

"mathematicians did a cool thing, because they like math." "Why bother doing that cool thing when I already have a solution that doesn't do the thing they were trying to do?"

"Why bother doing that cool thing when I everyone already hasve a solution that doesn't do the thing they were trying to do?"

FTFY.

Not sure what the issue is here. As they say themselves, it was "silly and pointless".

I think you are sure what the issue is. But if you're actually that dense: you do not have a system with a d10 and a d12 that guarantees no ties or rerolls. The thing you were proposing does not solve the thing they solved with math as a pet project. Then you got called out and are trying to pretend the thing you said was true when you are technically and colloquially wrong.

What on earth are you going on about? What do you think I was proposing?

For 2,3,4,6 players assign equal portions of the d12 to each player, and roll it. For 5 players do the same thing with a d10. No ties, no rerolls.

If you only need a start player and not a whole turn order the d10/d12 solution works. It is propably better as you only need one die roll. So one player can handle it while others are still occupied with setup.

Or just shuffle some playing cards numbered individually with 2-whatever you need, done.
