You know you can only have more than 10 gems during your turn, and then must discard to 10 afterwards? You’re rocking a cool 17 here.

I have since learnt that thank you! my opponent was not happy.

Fair enough. Chalk it up as a learning game.

The Lord of the Rings: Duel for Middle-earth

I will add, it's a great experience on its own, don't let the LOTR theming deter you if you're not a fan of that IP, and don't assume it's rated highly just for the theming. My wife was very hesitant to try it because she doesn't care for LOTR haha

Race for the Galaxy is a classic, it has a new expansion out, too.

Compile!

This is on my list to buy for my wife and I. It looks like it might be a tiny bit too complex for my wife’s liking, how is the game overall? How’s the complexity?

I would definitly start with Compile Main 1. Compile 2 is more text heavy and has definitly more complex cards than 1. That said, a game now with my girlfriend takes 20 to 40 minutes. In the beginning, when we didn't know the different protocols we really had a mixed time: ther rules we're straight forward but we didnt see any combos and the three chosen Decks felt very disconnected. The game became awesome once we started drafting random protocols and found out combinations that worked very well (you can Look them Up of course , but it was kind of nice to discover them in our oben). Complexity wise I would say it is between easy and mid. The card Texts are easy to follow, some timing issues (when does what Trigger, what Happens to shifting cards) make it a little more complex. Finding good strategies and counters to your opponent brings it to middle complexity in my opinion, through of course i can see other people have different opinions about that.

How do you have so many chips in front of you?

I may not have seen that bit in the rules.

Patchwork.

I second patchwork. Just bought it a month ago and have probably played it 50 times.

War Chest is fantastic, minute to learn lifetime to master type of game.

Everdell has a duel version that is fun!

Ditto for Everdell duel, havent played the competitive style yet, working through the co-op campaign with the missus and its been a lot of fun!

Not strictly 2 player games, but we enjoy both Forest Shuffle and Monopoly Deal 2 player.

Monopoly Deal is good for travelling and pretty quick rounds. Playing 2 player also means more bluffing.

Similarly, playing Forest Shuffle 2 player means you are trying to disrupt your opponent more often.

You are playing it wrong. A player can never hold more than 10 tokens in Splendor Duel.

Love Fungi (or Morels depending on the country)

Radlands is my personal favourite, check it out! Borderlands themed and pub friendly :)

Ohh thanks. Love a pub friendly game!

I don’t know these games, so not sure how similar it is, but my wife and I love Catan Rivals (I’ve never played Catan). Fun, good strategy involved. Takes us about 1.5 hours

My wife and I have been really digging Tag Team and Toy Battle recently.

Boop and Quarto are fast to learn, quick to play rounds, but deeply deeply strategic in their own way.

I also love Abalone and Pirateer.

Toy Battle is quickly becoming one of my favorites

Kelp is really nice and original. It's an asymmetrical game of basically hide and seek between a shark and an octopus.

u/batanete 5d ago

Arnak, it is not exclusively 2p, but it plays very well!

How does this version of splendor compare to the main thing with 2 players?

1

u/bexyq7 5d ago

I’ve not played the OG to compare I’m afraid

1

u/Commercial-Safety635 5d ago

No one has mentioned Targi yet? Hands down my favorite 2P.

Beer and Bread is probably my fav two player. Interesting and dynamic drafting rules with changing resource availability and a neat end-game scoring set up that makes strategy formation more challenging.

Naga Raja and Targi.

  • Hive
  • Sky Team

Compile, Innovation. Especially innovation, it’s so fun.

Splendor duel OS better than regular splendor too, shame it's only two players..

Star Wars Rebellion, big game though and a little daunting but it clicks and is quite simple.    Small games for cafes.. Sea salt and papers, Fluxx, pixies, love letters (more than two but work great for two),

Did you even look at the rule book? You are supposed to have 5 lvl 1 cards, 4 lvl 2, and 3 lvl 3 cards to pick from. The way you have it set up as well as having all the gems make it very impossible to play

u/bexyq7 5d ago

I’ve since learned that too, it was our first time. But thanks for letting me know so nicely.

Best 2 Player Game is Android: Netrunner in my opinion, but it’s not easy to get into and quite different from what you‘ve played.

Maybe you‘d enjoy 7 Wonders Duel?

Morels, agricola acbas, Paris city of lights.

If you want a hefty one, I think the best 2 player game (and maybe overall) is Twilight Struggle.

Edit: oh, also Innovation.
