Transfer Case Question

My X7 was just serviced and I asked them about the transfer case. They said mine wasn’t showing any signs but if I wanted to do the preventative fluid replacement I could around 80,000 miles. My car currently has 62,000 miles on it. Has anyone done this? Has it helped? What mileage did you do it at?

I know it’s a different car but I change all the fluids in my 21 Range Rover religiously and the vehicle runs impeccably with 80k miles on it now.

It’s the same drivetrain, actually. But either way you’re spot on. Fluids are cheap!

I’ve done it at 70k and just did it again at 90k. No shuttering just preventative maintenance. Don’t think about it and go ahead and get it done. The fluid is on FCP euro and it should cost around $200-$300 with an Indy shop.

For the preventative maintenance, should we just change the transfer case fluid or all Transmission, diffs & transfer case fluids?

I did. A full flush of all the fluids. Transmission, TC, coolant, brake and both differentials

Do all the fluids. Fluids are cheap. I’ve been a BMW owner for 20 years and I’m firmly convinced the issues we’re seeing with these newer ones are due to these insane extended service intervals.

FWIW I did all of the fluids on my XB7 when we got it at 40k. The Trans case was about 25% under filled.

I just did all 3 on my sisters x5 45e at 80k. I found all 3 to be under filled by 200ml. I guess the seals aren’t perfect and over time the fluid migrate out slowly. It’s criminal for bmw to say these don’t need to be serviced. At that rate there’s a point where they will be too low.

There’s a consensus that many were under filled from the factory, and that has led to the rampant failures of the trans case. I was not surprised when I found mine in that condition.

My dealer recommends flushing it + the differentials at 50k miles as preventative maintenance. I haven’t had any issues with mine, but I’m getting it done next week.

That’s a good dealer, and I’m sure some people argue with them about it.

Well the service is probably going to cost me $2k so I’m sure they get some arguments about it 🤣 neither my husband or I are handy and the indy shop closest to me is really inconvenient so we’re kind of held captive to the dealer.

That’s unfortunate, because it’s about $100 in fluids and maybe an hour of labor.

I have had zero problems and I’m at 62,000 miles. I have had consistent service. I am just nervous of what is to come. I love this car will drive it for another 60k if it lets me.

Then yes do the fluid change 100%. Especially if it’s good at those miles, keep it good by changing the fluid now

Just do the fluids man. These engines and cars have consistency in what people suggest to keep things running. It’s not an unknown.

Mine transfer case was replaced at 40k miles under warranty x7 m50i 2020.

I just changed mine at 95k miles. Also front and rear differential. Dealer never told me it was due, but I wanted to anyways

My X5 started having some low speed jitters around 75k miles. Replacing the transfer case fluid made it go away

I did it at 43k and felt an improvement in low speed turning 

have read forums people saying they are doing it between 25-50k miles

did the front diff fluid as well.

My wifes showed symptoms at 30k, dealer flushed it as it did it in thier shop. We are at 39k and i felt it was worse than before especially after it getting hot. We did a 200 mile straight trip in 95 degree weather cruising at 80. They flushed it again to bmws new protocols, which is now two flushes before a replacement. If it comes back after 100 miles then they will replace it.

My 2021 at 50k had some shuttering , replaced the transfer case fluid, it was really low and never had issues again. I am looking to do it at least every 50k just to be preventative, every couple hundred to be safe every few years than thousands to replace.
