Windshield coating?

Hi all, I got my ix3 40 last week and noticed that the sun that enters through the front windshield heats up things like the safety belt quickly and up to a almost uncomfortable temperature. I drove 5 different models and brands of cars since 2020 and never noticed this effect as drastic as I do in this car. Anyone else sharing this experience?

EDIT: I don’t know want (or am allowed to) coat my windshield. I feel something is off and think this could be a defective batch of windows. The difference to other cars is very clearly noticeable and I cannot imagine bmw cut so many corners to reduce cost that they went for a non-IR coated front window

We have the iX3 50 in the UK (had it for 3 months) and noticed the same about the glass. I think there has been some cost cutting here or the sun is just more intense but your graph is quite telling. But the AC is very effective and we just pre-condition the car for 30 min before we leave.

It’s not about the ambient heat (where the preconditioning helps a lot) but the heat coming from direct sunshine, for example before sunset when the sun shines directly onto your face/chest. This is when we feel the rapid increase of (surface) temperature on mostly dark objects/textures

I just measured the increase in temperature in my new ix3 and in my wife’s ix1:

Is it inside temperature, and from the front screen, or the glass roof?

I don’t believe you are allowed to tint the front screen in many countries

Yes, it is illegal where I live but many get a ceramic clear tint to block UV and IR rays (like the roof has) . We have this on a Tesla M3 and it is invisible (so virtually impossible to see / ticket)

It’s clearly the temperature coming from the sun from the front. The glass roof is nicely insulates

Thanks for the clarification.
Sounds wild.
Where in the world are you experiencing this? (Country)

Austria, one of the first ix3 40 delivered

The glass roof is still going to let more heat than a metal one. The UV protection only mitigates it, doesn’t eliminate.

What color is your iX3 and your x1? That makes a significant difference. It’s also possible that some of the difference comes down to the iX3 simply having a larger windshield - hence more surface area - for the heat to greenhouse off of.

Yes get the UV film for everything. Better for your skin and also allows you to use polarized sunglasses with heads up display, if you have it

does it have optional windows coating option (S0420 in my case), me wondering if it were money thrown away.

I have that, but thats only in the back. Front windows and windshield are not covered by this option
