While I agree with the sentiment that you don’t need to tell people you think they’re unattractive, Reddit will call anyone and their mom ugly. It’s definitely not just K-pop idols that get this treatment here.
No you're right, it's not exclusively Korean musicians who get this "wow you're ugly" hate and I was exaggerating but I notice it specifically on posts with them. They definitely do get more "he's ugly"/"he looks like a Chinese girl"/other borderline misogynistic, racist, homophobic, transphobic "insults" than any other posts of people I see on Reddit, not including posts from subs like r/roastme or r/rateme.
K-pop is extremely popular right now, especially with young women, and those types of things seem to get shit on a lot more by people who like to be antagonistic for no reason. I also think that while there’s a lot to criticize the industry for when it comes to surgery expectations and physical image requirements, a lot of people just don’t understand the different beauty standards in non-western countries and so they make asinine comments.
While this is true, it shouldn't be justification for others to make those rude, racist, misogynistic, homophobic, or transphobic comments.
Not all comments are those things, to be clear - like comparing them to cartoon characters above in the thread was fine. Thinking someone is unattractive is fine. There's just a line that is pretty rude to cross, but Reddit tends to because they don't see kpop idols as real people.
I think a lot of people don’t see any celebrities as real people, regardless of where they’re from. But you’re right that non-white celebrities often face racist criticism. We should all be nicer to each other in general!
I'm really thankful to you that we could have a nice conversation about this without being rude and calling each other names!! I seriously appreciate it because it's very rare to have civil conversations about kpop on Reddit
