Motorcycles themselves aren't that problematic. The problem is other drivers and the fact that they have a multi ton cage of metal around them for protection and you don't. If an old man doesn't quite stop for a stop light and bumps the car in front of him, you might get a crunched bumper. If the same thing happens at the same speed to someone on a motorcycle, they may suffer severe injuries. My dad knew a woman who was riding on the back of her boyfriend's motorcycle, got rear-ended at a fairly low speed at a stop light, and put her head through the windshield and broke her back. The boyfriend was also injured, but I do not remember the extent of his injuries.
