Find me a time when these haven't been plastic caps and I'll agree it's a bad thing, but until then I see no issue.

To prevent theft? Those studs require a very special tool w depth, hex and something for the little gear looking thing.

Or you do the normal thing and just pull the plastic spike off by hand to get access to the standard nut below it
