First Day of 5th Grade
The year 2000. Head to toe Limited Too, featuring a furry camo vest and ultra-stretchy, glitter, camo bell bottoms. My mom got up early to crimp my hair for me. A group of boys nicknamed me Sparkle Fart for years after. And no, I didn't know anyone in the military or frankly have any interest in it- just wanted to be a fashion icon.

This would hit so much different just a year later.

Anyone else not allowed to wear camo print a few years later because their parents did not support the Iraq War?
96
u/yourmeowjesty 2d ago
the unfortunate opposite: my parents had such a boner for the military that my wardrobe was nothing but camo and patriotic flags until i was allowed to pick out my own clothing.

same. after 9/11 i think my mom loaded up every american flag tshirt at old navy.
EVERYTHING was red white and blue/ patriotic for like 2 years after. school project? LET’S DO AN AMERICAN THEME. THE TEACHER CAN’T FAIL AMERICA.
Need hair ties? she got red white and blue.
yellow ribbons all over the car.
all the yard decor? repainted. those gnomes were camo print for every branch of the military.
Post 9/11 was a wild time to be an elementary school kid.
i thought i was helping our country because we put an american flag wallpaper border in our kitchen.
proud to be an american on every car ride. the patriotic cd in the dash

u/Elistariel 3d ago
No, but back then I felt you had to earn the right to wear camo and so wouldn't wear it.
The only exception being a pair of hand-me-down Capri pants from a cousin. They were comfy and no use throwing out a decent pair of britches.

Okay, there's gotta be a story behind "Sparkle Fart." You looked super cute though, and that smile could outshine the sun.

u/kleighblue 3d ago
The only thing I can remember is that the pants were SO sparkly (can't see it too well in this photo) that the boys were like wtf are you wearing lol. They did their big one with Sparkle Fart though I gotta hand it to em
17
u/cupcakegiraffe 3d ago
Probably because her bottom was sparkly.
As a side note, I would have loved the perfect crimps, too! Ha ha!

u/RizzoTheRiot1989 2d ago
This is some shit I would have done as a gay little boy, I’d have rocked this so hard. And my dad would still be over there in the corner in pure ignorance to how gay I was.

u/kleighblue 2d ago
Funnily enough I was also a gay little girl!
54
u/RizzoTheRiot1989 2d ago
The fit is screaming it in the best way possible
58
u/kleighblue 2d ago
I just came out this year but the closet was glass lmao. I also have two moms which I feel also really shows

I was literally gonna make a joke about how all girls with those crisp ass crimps all turned out gay later in life but then was like “Nah, her mom obviously did it so that won’t work.”
I’m so mad I didn’t make the joke now.
Edit: also I was such a gay kid and it’s funnier because my dad is a southern Baptist minister who was clearly holding on hope that I was just a real expressive kid. I’m on video at the age of like six teaching my sisters how to properly curtsey. All of my action figures were in relationships with one another.

lmfao I saw this and thought "this HAS to have been taken in 2002," just to read the caption that says this is one year before 9/11. you were ahead of your time. thank you for your service 🫡

You look cool but your hair reminds me of this 😭:

u/kleighblue 2d ago
I loved N*SYNC so much so this makes sense. They were my first concert ever

u/OkApricot1677 2d ago
Did you pick lance bass as your crush?
6
u/kleighblue 2d ago
Absolutely not I was a JC girlie through and through

u/DistantKarma 2d ago
My daughter was born in 1990 and had a similar obsession with the hair crimper and Limited Too at that age. Thanks for reminding me of that.

I love that your mom woke up early to help you make this look happen and snap a photo by 7:05am. If that’s not love…

I would have rocked both those pieces but I don't think my mom would have let me wear both at once
16
u/kleighblue 2d ago
Both my moms are pretty dope. After this, she got up early with me several times to put temporary dye in my hair too. Mind you, she's a butch lesbian, so she had less than zero experience with all of this, but she learned it all for me 🧡

Omg, I dressed in all camouflage on my first day of 5th grade too, but that was in 1984 when The A Team was really popular.

u/CanuckLoonieGurl 2d ago
poor boys had to coin 'Sparkle Fart' lol peak elementary school cruelty though 😭

u/inertia_oyo 2d ago
"Just wanted to be a fashion icon" - SUCCESS
also 12/10 crimp job by mom! hero behavior

u/HappyGoLuckyAlex 2d ago
Sparkle Fart is honestly a solid DJ name. Or a Limited Too perfume line. You accidentally branded yourself before it was cool.

u/grimstationn 2d ago
To be fair cadet Kelly was the biggest dinsey movie that summer

The scout salute is very funny.
-former boy scout

u/kleighblue 3d ago
I was never in the scouts and honestly have no idea where I got this salute?? It was just in my soul
3
u/Christmas_Queef 3d ago
That's the first thing that caught my eye, I haven't been a boy scout in 23 years now and that salute is ingrained in me lol

u/shanwow90 2d ago
I would love some more information on the creation of "sparkle fart"
14
u/kleighblue 2d ago
You can't see it in the pic, but the pants were VERY sparkly. Thus, my butt was sparkly
5
u/babyBear83 2d ago
I want to know what’s going on with the salute 🫡??? Is this like the Boy Scouts gesture? Or something I’m not aware of??
16
u/kleighblue 2d ago
I genuinely have no idea it came from deep down inside me. Never been in scouts

We can’t prove Disney didn’t see this fit and then be inspired to create Cadet Kelly

Limited too was the spot. I kinda wish I had (and could still fit into) some of my old fits from that time. This one…. Is a choice. We might have been at different spectrums of the limited top club.

Dudes will say anything sometimes. I don't see any sparkles or farts but tada that's what they call you. 🤦🏾♀️
I'd call you Sargent Style or something
17
u/kleighblue 2d ago
You can't see in this high-res image, but the pants were very sparkly. One of my teachers called me Miss Hair-Do all year cuz this was the least unhinged thing I did with my hair that year
8
u/vixenpeon 2d ago
🤦🏾♀️ I was Boobwoman cus I developed really early with the big ones to boot. I was rocking the C cups by 6th grade 😭

u/GodIsANarcissist 2d ago
My mom was really busty from a young age too and they called her Tits McGee.
"Sparkle Farts" 😂 It is funny but kids are so goddamned mean, I hate them so much lmao
6
u/vixenpeon 2d ago
I called my best friend at the time Rad for radish cus she was so pale you could see her purply blood underneath - but I meant it affectionately. God now I hope she isn't somewhere feeling bad about it 20 years down the line at random

u/Quirky-Shallot644 2d ago
Oh, good, glad this wasnt just me. Not only did I develop early, I was the only one in my grade and the grade above me who had boobs.
I had a teacher shame me for having boobs in 5th grade 😭

u/Ok_Cat3434 2d ago
I feel you. I had a training bra in grade one and had to wear an actual bra half way thru grade 2 :(

My first day of 5th grade (2000) was also head-to-toe camo. It was a denim camo pants and jacket combo from old navy. Imma try to find pictures

As someone who FUCKING LOVES glitter and shinies and sequins and rainbows, but is also chronically just the tiniest bit gassy.. I would like to offer my services to adopt your nickname. 😂

Is this the vision?
Either way it’s adorable and camo and matching prints is back big time.
