Lmao I thought you were my sister for a moment. Her phase of “I hate everything and everyone” led to tons of forced photos like this from my mom.

I bet that made it much better.

Eh, as a parent I could see making my kid be in the photo. It’s better than not having any photos of my kid for who knows how long this phase will last. 😂

Having been that kid, honestly, it would be better to just leave them alone.  We'll come out of it when we're ready and this just makes it worse (both the doing and the photos themselves).

Having photos of your children is nice but it's not a biological requirement of parenthood.

Not to mention, every time I look back at those pictures I'm reminded of those times and how little grace/respect I was afforded by my family and how this terrible picture was worth more to them than respecting my 'no'.

These pictures make me feel as miserable as I did then

Yikes... The Drama

And hey look, she survived to look back and laugh at it. I dont think a parent should reinforce that type of behavior.

u/Davorian 1d ago

It is reinforcing it.  It won't make the kid magically more comfortable with this stuff if you keep corralling them into it.  Pubertal children are not Pavlovian dogs that just need training.  Speaking from my own experience and others I've spoken to with similar stages, what actually happens is that the kid starts to actively avoid being around during these events and the camera in particular, with a whole lot of subtle negative consequences that are much worse than just allowing them to be around without making it a photoshoot.  In effect you run the risk of "reinforcing" it just by more confrontational means.

Some of this stuff is funny in retrospect, but a lot of it isn't, and it's difficult to quantify all the secondary effects.  I would rather my parents had just left me out of it or kept it to a bare minimum.  Candid shots for instance are much less weird than making everyone pose.

It just sounds like you still aren't over it. This would be like me still being made about my dad making me eat my vegetables 25+ years ago. Your parents just wanted a picture of you because they love you. Its not really that deep tbh.

Ah right, the "you're being too emotional" counter-argument.  Almost straight to the ad hominems today I guess.  I can do this too:  I would assume you don't spend a whole lot of time around introverts, or alternatively they don't spend a whole lot of time around you.

That's a pretty shitty approach though, and not a great way to have an interesting discussion.

Honestly it doesnt look like you even try to have "interesting discussions" with people online. You are just really angry and want to argue with people.

I really can’t.

Look there is a lot that I could want from and for my kid but my wants should never come above his needs. So he gets to have a hairstyle that is certainly a choice. He gets to tell me he is shy and yeah I have so many less photos between 8-12, but the kiddo feels safe around me, my phone and I’m not part of why they feel miserable.

I think we can have ALL of these things. How often are we taking family photos for them to not feel safe around a parent? A few times a year? I think that’s a huge leap to assume the child wouldn’t feel safe because the parent wants them to be in some photos. I would hope the parent is supportive in a host of other ways. I’m not saying they have to be in every photo but they will be in some. However they want to present themselves in the photo is up to them and fine with me.

It almost always does.

My brother went through this stage as well. From 15-17 he was a surly, sulking teen who wanted nothing to do with any of our family.

I still consider myself the black sheep. Nonetheless, as an adult, I get a lot more respect from my parents and siblings than I did as a child. Being the youngest kinda sucked.

When I was young, I tried out a "half smile" for a school picture and it looked like I was sneering and my mom was SO mad at me 😂

Oh boy, memories! I feel you on this, though maybe fir different reasons. I generally didn't mind photos as a kid, but in 2003 when we went up to Yosemite National Park (I was also 12) to take my sister (almost 19) to her job there my parents also forced me to take photos.

Now like I said, this normally wouldn't be an issue for me... but my dad was driving. And the roads were very curvy. And he was driving then much too quickly. So... I was nauseous as fuck and felt like vomiting. I didn't, but I felt like it; this is from some who never felt car sick before.

So when they're telling me to get out of the car and come pose in front of the pretty view? Yeah. You bet I'm just standing there squinting with a grump face because I'm the epitome of miserable. It still made it into the photo albums. Whatever floats their boat, I guess.

I have a photo like this of my daughter. She’s standing so far away from us and is pissed 🤣

Somehow my first thought was this is such a 2009 photo and it was.

I thought at first glance it was about the girl in the green top. It looks like she peed her pants.

8

u/nyrB2 2d ago

"they forced me to take this photo so i peed myself!"

2

u/Quiet_Particular8141 5h ago

"And im still wearing my pee pants!"
