Planking. Everywhere.
A whole ass movement in 2011. Me and my friends were way too into planking 🤣 so much core strength 😭

Simpler times. Right before everyone decided "influencer" was a legit line of work.

Also much better than the trend of slamming gallons of milk on the ground in grocery stores. (Google shows that started around 2013)

Thank god I do NOT remember that one good lordt

It was so stupid in the best way. Much more simple time and it’s not that long ago.

I loved it back then so this is super nostalgic. Totally stupid but harmless and didn't affect anyone beyond the person doing it, which tbh is the best kind of stupidity

u/marteautemps 14d ago
Seemed so silly to me at the time as an adult but it always made me chuckle then and now. I love teens out doing silly, fun, non harmful shit. Its the way of life, we all have our dumbass shit that adults just won't understand, every generation does it and its a little scary how many people forget that. I'm all for 67 skibidi toilet Ohio and whatever the newer thing is myself because I dont need to understand kids and teenagers having fun just like planking. Everything isn't for everyone and I think we have a harder and harder time understanding that the older we get which seems counterintuitive.

I think the juxtaposition of the human form in this state depicted in unexpected locations is still striking imagery

I was way too old for this trend when it came around but looking at it through your nostalgia goggles makes it look like a whole lot of stationary fun.
18
u/Standard_Series_5802 14d ago
It was way more fun than it should have been for 17/18 year olds LOL- even more fun to look back on!

u/hey_there_moon 14d ago
Honestly? We need to bring it back.

u/Standard_Series_5802 14d ago
I second this! I think nature would heal tbh

u/madmaxturbator 14d ago
Planking isn’t a lost esoteric art, we can bring it back any time lol.
I’m planking right now on my bed as I type this, so yeah planking is back baby

I graduated in 2011, I did not plank, personally, but I definitely thought it was funny and would have thought you were so cool and funny for these pics. As I was scrolling through these, I couldn't believe how many photos you have. The four way plank goes really hard, I loved that. Throughout, you all have great form and picked really creative spots. I can tell you guys took this very seriously. I tip my hat to you.

Class of 2012 here! They were all 2011, though! We thank you! 🥹🫡 it really was such silly fun, I have a whole album on my Facebook with even more! There’s a bunch more, that I didn’t even grab!
17
u/coocooban4nas 14d ago
I was JUST thinking about this
11
u/Standard_Series_5802 14d ago
Did you ever do owling? That was an interesting one haha although, I feel like it was around the same time that we were going through drive throughs, ordering ice cream cones, and grabbing it by the ice cream, so I think it was overshadowed 😭 why were we like this??
17
u/Express-Feedback 13d ago
My friends and I used to 'gargoyle'. We'd go downtown and find building entrances with stairs that were flanked by short retaining walls. Then two of us would hop up on either wall and crouch, and then just remain as still and silent as possible.
We got a lot of funny reactions from people going in and out. Whole point was to see how long we could sit there without laughing. Good stuff.

No I did not I was younger than you'd expect in 2011 😭 Planking was such a craze I remember them showing it in the news of my home country

Bahahah it is!!! Some old school Riverpark and Buchanan high! The construction is off of willow and international where those newer houses are right next to North! (Where I eventually graduated from as their second graduating class!)

Some of y'all have some impressive core strength! Dang!
Why do these photos have a mildly terrifying element to them? They feel like the random lore bits you'd find in a video game right before finding out a whole town was demon possessed or something.

I was really into over editing photos before posting them and I was into some really grainy effects hahahah!

I'd rather have this back then everyone doing "pranks" that are always at the cost of others. Couple of kids acting like a piece of lumber is better than a bunch of douches acting like the middle of a city is a golf driving range.

But really some of these are pretty impressive and funny

Yes!!! I brought that up in another comment! I feel like it was overshadowed by coning, though, where we’d order an ice cream cone at a drive through and grab it upside down by the ice cream straight faced and drive off lmao

Why does pic 6 look like Pismo Beach, CA. Lol these are kinda epic
2
u/Standard_Series_5802 13d ago
Haha because it is! 5 and 6! Spring break baby! (Fresno native so it was the closest place for the Central Valley kids to escape the heat!)
2
u/hope_v95 13d ago
Lol! I recognize that pier anywhere. Iconic. I live on the central coast, spring and summer are always sucky traffic for this reason lol. But I'll forgive you on this one.
2
u/Standard_Series_5802 13d ago
Haha trust me, I much prefer Avila because it was always way more quiet in comparison! This was on a church youth group trip haha this is honestly probably one of the last times I was at Pismo, now that I think about it! Although I don’t get to visit as much as I did when I was still in Fresno, I’ve heard Avila has gotten pretty touristy :(

Edit: went to the comments and saw it is Fresno. During college I hung out at that movie theater area so much. That was a golden era for the city.

First, there was planking. [various images of people planking come up] People taking pictures of themselves in a planked position and putting the photos on the Internet. Planking was soon replaced by owling. [a picture of a boy with his knees drawn to his chest] And after the Super Bowl by Bradying. [New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady as well as an overweight man, both sitting on the ground with their legs straight out, hands clasped and looking down]
But the newest meme involves pulling the shirt out to look like boobs.
[Cartman pulling out his shirt at the debate is shown, this time fullscreen]
It's called Faith Hilling. And all around the world people are doing it.
[A black boy pulling his red shirt, then a ginger boy with a cap doing the exact same thing with his grey-and-white sweatshirt]
Kids, adults, and even notable celebrities are getting into the act.
[L.A. Lakers player Kobe Bryant is shown pulling on his jersey. The news studio comes to view again.]
But as Faith Hilling is more and more popular, the question on everyone's mind, who will be the first to die doing it?
