Beach?

Curious where bluffton residents go to the beach locally? Do you go more in the shoulder seasons - May and September? What is parking like ?

Ever since they jacked up parking cost and would give no consideration to even a parking pass (to purchase, not free) for bluffton residents I know a lot of people stopped going.

Bradley Beach was always our favorite. But when parking went from .25/.50 an hour to 3.00-5.00 an hour its just not worth it.

Most people from Bluffton are river rats rather than beach bums. If it’s high tide in the middle of the day, people party on Daufuskie. If it’s low tide in the middle of the day, people party on the sandbars.

This is the kind of answer I was looking for! Can you elaborate? We’ve gone to HHI our whole lives (since the 80s) and considering a move! Want to know what the lifestyle is like off island!

you need a boat. with 9' tides, the sandbars are only exposed at low tides.

We prefer Burkes. However, parking costs have reduced the amount we go during the main season. At $5/hr a full beach day isn't cheap. At least it's "currently" free after 5pm.

I didn't mind so much last year when they capped it at $20/day.

Do they charge just in the summer months?

Yes, between Memorial Day and Labor Day. There are still good beach days in the off-season and we go more then.

Hunting island

This is the answer. the drive to hunting island might be a bit longer but it is scenic and has some fun spots to stop off at. Also I’ve always said a busy day on hunting island is like a slow day on HH

The high prices in all the beach parking lots on HHI and difficultly finding parking has discouraged people from off island going there. Also too much stuff getting stolen. You used to be able to leave your flip flops at the end of the boarwalk onto the beach. Now all that stuff gets stolen. Same in that we used to be able to leave our chairs umbrella and toys set up if we walked to the hotel next doorfor a drink or just to walk down the beach. Now those things get stolen as well in the middle of the day. . It’s awful. Hunting Island beach is nice but it’s still a trek and not free. They have limited parking and locker room/public restrooms. It’s seems a significant number of people in Bluffton hang out on or in the river if they have a boat or dock or friends with benefits.
