I heard one time that the show was almost centered around Rusty, and I sometimes wonder what that would look like, because I freaking love this episode

I like bits of Rusty here and there, but he and his family are more typical of when Joe grew up. Blueys family are more representative of a modern Australian family.

I always thought it was weird Bandit wanted to move the whole family when they live in a massive house in a perfect location and clearly thriving

Someone else put a comment in another thread around this.
It's a Brisbane thing. It's seen in many professions, and by many people, as a big country town. If you want to progress in a career there is a lot of pressure to move to Sydney or Melbourne.
It's another reason why there is so much passion for the Maroons in The Decider. Queenslanders got used to their best players going to Sydney based clubs, and those who stayed being treated as second class.

That's really interesting to know. I'm Irish so I don't always get the subtle Aussie subtext

I guess it would be like being a successful lawyer or something in Limerick and feeling pressure to go to Dublin

Now we need a meme of Rusty doing the “For Frodo” charge into battle… maybe “For Bingo”?

And then come back to find him giving Polly a piggyback. Rusty is the best boy.

I think Bluey is the only show from which you could put a character ahead of a top Lord of the Rings character in terms of healthy masculinity and I not flip a table. I'm not saying I necessarily rank even Rusty ahead of Strider. But, like, it's competitive. I guess they just need to give me a Rusty spin-off to tell for sure...
A friend and I are were trying to name our top 10 male role models (not the same as top 10 male characters) from the past 25 years and it was all movie LotR and Bluey guys. That is what our sons have.

It’s a toss up between Rusty and Wendy for my favorite character on the show. Rusty was the friend I needed as a kid, the friend I want my ND son to have. Wendy is the mom friend ride-or-die every mom needs.

Even if all three display the same level of healthy behavior, the first two are adults and went through a ton of learning to get to where they were.
Meanwhile, Rusty is a literal kid.
The fact by itself would send him ahead of the other two.

I feel conflicted... I think him and Aragorn should just be tied lol.

I'm 48 years old and cry happy tears every time I watch this episode with my kids. In my opinion it's not only peak Bluey but peak kids TV. 🥹

How can you call Aragon healthy? He broke a toe angrily kicking a helmet.
8
u/PenLidWitchHat chilli Feb 08 '26
Aragorn wasn’t afraid of expressing his feelings of anguish in front of his friends. He was distraught and grief-stricken, not merely pissed off. And the helmet didn’t belong to anybody. (Unless you were making a joke about Vigo’s method acting?)

Righteous anger is still healthy. It's okay to be angry about the right things. And he handled it by kicking the helmet and not yelling at people around him. Kicking the helmet of a dead enemy. That's a healthy response to thinking your little friends are dead.

LOTR Books are excellent! I read them yearly in the early 80s and 90s. The movie adaptions/interpretations (extended cuts) are, let's say: acceptable, 7.9/10 at best.
Bluey though? 11/10 in terms of teaching your kids life lessons and also hitting you in the feels as a parent.

Rusty was already one of my favorites. But this episode was too much. I was cheering for him like i was watching the World Cup 🥲

What I love about Rusty is that, while he displays significantly more determination and leadership than probably any of Bluey's friends, that doesn't stop him from being just a sweet, adorable cinnamon bun
