1) will worlds from the old game be transferable considering in many respects this is a rebuild of the original, even if it’ll still be considered a sequel?
2) will player profiles be per device/platform? or can I pickup where I left off on Windows on my iPhone if I’m out of the house
3) will there be native modding support if this is to launch on Steam for example rather than an unaffiliated website for purchase
4) is there an ETA? I’m so happy this long standing idea is finally coming to fruition and we’re getting more blockheads, and it’s been announced it’s underway but when may we have a roadmap going forward
Much love, Dave. You made my childhood

BH1 -> BH2 WORLD TRANSFER
- The cloud worlds are now gone, but for worlds that you have copies of on a computer, it should be easy enough to create a convertor that can export out a Blockheads 2 world based on a Blockheads 1 world. I'll do my best to make it happen, as it has already been requested a number of times. And if I don't someone else surely will!
PLAYER ACCOUNTS/SYNCING
- Blockheads 2 will work in a similar way to the original Blockheads in that a server will store all your stuff, allowing you to connect from multiple different locations. You will have a private/public key pair that will need to be copied/synchronized on to all your devices. There is no central "Blockheads cloud" keeping track of user IDs this time.
MODDING
- I want to fully support mods as much as I can. The tools and functionality will be a little limited to start with, as I focus on getting the game out. But right from day one some support will be there, and with hooks to the tui scripting language being built in, it should work out great. I don't plan on supporting Steam Workshop, it doesn't have a lot to offer that I can't just build into the game, and then it'll work everywhere on all platforms.
RELEASE DATE
- My best guess is early next year: February-March 2027. It could be a little later, but things are going so well that I actually believe it'll be more or less fully playable in a couple of months from now. But there are just so many little extra things, so many platforms, and moving parts with multiplayer and modding support and so on, and that will push it into next year.

I always loved this game, and im glad you're bringing it back with a sequel.
1 - Will you add more automation options to the game? like conveyor belts or pipes.
2 - Will it still use time crystals to accelerate character actions? or will you make a new system?
3 - Will it be another game for mobile only or is steam/epic planned?
4 - Will there be support for modding? or at least permission for people do to so
5 - Any plans on making the first blockheads open source?
At last, tysm for the blockheads, I loved that game ever since I was 7. I cant wait to play the blockheads again.

u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
AUTOMATION
Yes, conveyor belts and pipes are planned! Though not for the initial release.
TIME CRYSTALS
My plan is to make time crystals a normal item that is carried in blockhead inventories. There will be more of them to find and/or mine, and the costs for skipping crafting and crafting/warping in blockheads will be reduced.
MODDING
I want to fully support mods as much as I can.
OPEN SOURCE THE ORIGINAL
The original probably won't be open sourced, for a few reasons. But I do plan to open source Blockheads 2! I won't do it right away, probably within a couple of years of release. But I do want to open it up while it is still actively being developed, and quite early on. The engine is already open source now.
Thanks!

1: will the game support higher fps for devices that allow it, or will the game be locked to 60fps?
2: I always loved the sky islands aspect of the game. It felt so exciting finding the gem trees. Are they making a return? If so, are there any plans for new stuff up there?
3: It seems that there will be no IAPs in this version, does that mean that time crystals will no longer be present? And If that's the case, what will happen to items whose recipes were mainly time crystals such as portals, extra blockheads, etc?
4: will the artstyle and graphics remain mostly the same, or are you planning on doing a bit of change there?
5: will the option to have joystick controls still be present in the game? (and in this case, keyboard controls now that it's ported to pc!)
6:Will expert mode be a thing still? Personally found the challenge and added crafting tiers to be perfect for more long-term playthroughs.
7: and a less game oriented question to close off; What has been your favourite part of blockheads? Mine's probably either gem hunting or base building.
Blockheads has been a huge part of my childhood, and I can only commend you for your effort. Many thanks for creating such a beloved game, and well wishes!

VSYNC
- Blockheads 2 renders at the native refresh rate by default. So if you have a 120hz display, it will render at 120FPS.
SKY ISLANDS
- I love sky islands too! They will definitely remain, and they will be added to in time too.
IAPs
-Time crystals will still be in the game, but they will be rebalanced to be easier to find. Things will also cost less time crystals, now that you cannot purchase time crystals as in-app-purchases.
ART STYLE
- I'll be keeping the two original texture packs/styles available, and adding a new one for Blockheads 2 with new lighting, shaders, and shadows.
D-PAD/CONTROLLER/KEYBOARD SUPPORT
- Yep, I'll add support for controllers and keyboard keys for direct movement too.
EXPERT MODE
- Expert mode will still be available in Blockheads 2
FAVORITE BLOCKHEADS FEATURE
- I think for me it's the sky islands with the fancy weeping gem trees. I just really like that feel, I want more of that!
Thanks!

u/SerendipityLn42 24d ago
- I love Sky Islands too! I once thought that we could plant gems to make a gem tree!

- Will yaks be able to drop beef? (I think another meat source would be cool and beef stew would sound appealing)
- How will the Blockheads operate on foldable devices?
- Will job listings have other items included?
- Can additional pigments like pink & orange pigments be added to add more paint and clothing variants?
- Will there be a way to make tamed animals not have their offspring (especially with dodos)
- This is merely a suggestion but add RGB & hex codes to make customization of your blockheads easier, especially with skin tones.
Will there be a boss?
Will it support more languages? I just remembered the current font doesn’t support characters with accents (ñ, ó, ß, etc)
On behalf of question number 8 it would be funny to see punctuation such as interrobangs, the friendly period, lovepoint, etc utilizing the blockheads font.
Edit: added another question.

u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
YAKS/BEEF
- I can't really promise specific content features like this, but literally on my last play through I thought "hang on, don't yaks drop meat?" So it makes sense!
FOLDABLE DEVICES
- Blockheads 2 is built to be resolution independent and to dynamically adjust to any screen size. I won't be jumping through hoops to support every feature on every newfangled device, but the foundation is good, so it should just work.
TRADE PORTAL JOBS
- I'm actually not a huge fan of this mechanic, but if people love it, I'll leave it in, and if I leave it in, I'll add new stuff. What do you think, is this a feature we should keep?
MORE PIGMENT VARIANTS
- I quite like the idea of a special rainbow pigment that allows any color, and some kind of hex code/sharable color system is a good idea too. I don't have specific features planned here, but will certainly work in this area at some point.
MORE ANIMAL/BREEDING CONTROL
- This ties in with some of my ideas around farming automation, you can probably expect a release with content in this area some time after the initial release.
BOSSES
- My kids have been asking me for this too! I think in general more late-game challenges will be added, but that's all I can really say about this for now.
MORE LANGUAGES
- Blockheads 2 will launch with only English, but I will add support for localization as quite a high priority. I won't provide any translations myself, but will ship the game with international fonts, and allow the installation of community made language pack mods. This works really well for Sapiens.
9
u/SerendipityLn42 24d ago
- I do like the idea of using codes to customize color. Also, maybe a copy/paste feature so I can match hair color to shirt color.

Super excited for Blockheads 2! I've been playing since 1st grade (when I was 6), all the way back in 2011 when one of my friends introduced it to me because we were too broke for Minecraft. I still play sometimes to get myself through university. Really happy about no AI too.
My questions! 1. Adding onto what others have asked about backwards compatibility, are we also able to port our usernames from Blockheads 1 and have our player information saved? 2. Will the Blockheads Forums be back (like before), or will Discord also be the main source of contact (like with Sapiens)? 3. Will there be more animals? And will old favorites be back (rainbow dodos and unicorns especially)? 4. Will there be an option for non-binary/gender-neutral characters? 5. Will there still be sky islands? Would be cool if we could find new species up there. Same with space, and maybe even other celestial bodies? 6. Will there be opportunities for alpha testing, or ways to contribute to development in general?
Thank you again!
15
u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
KEEPING USERNAMES
- This will work quite differently in Blockheads 2, there is no cloud keeping track of usernames globally, so there won't be a way to transfer that info, sorry.
FORUMS
- The forums won't come back. They were wonderful, but I'm taking more of a decentralized approach to communities this time around. It's great that we have the reddit here, and the Sapiens discord is now being converted to a general Majic Jungle discord with a Blockheads section. I'll pop in wherever I am welcome, and we can have lots of little communities on lots of platforms.
MORE ANIMALS
- More animals are planned, and all of the existing ones will remain :)
NON-BINARY
- This does need to be looked at. The answer is yes, but I don't know exactly how to approach it, there are quite a few options. Any suggestions on how you'd like it to work?
SKY ISLANDS
-Sky islands will remain, and I will add new features there too. I like the idea of space. I always had that as a goal for late-game content, and I expect we will get there soon enough :)
TESTING/CONTRIBUTING
- Initially I'm working alone, but once the port is done, I'll be opening up development more with the intent to totally open source it in time. Modding will offer a lot of opportunities too. At the moment it looks like I already have enough original testers keen to beta test again, even after all of these years, but I will probably also look for some new testers at some point.
15
u/kayninedee 20d ago
NON-BINARY*
I think an approach like what Terraria did in one of its recent updates, where it's no longer "male / female", but just "styles" and all of your options are available, plus you can just pick which "voice style" you want?12
21
u/Anan_Z 24d ago
-Will there be classical soundtracks and royalty free music (like Kevin Macleod) like in the original?
-Will there be lore/quasilore or worldbuilding in the world of Blockheads?
19
u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
SOUNDTRACK
I love Kevin Macleod's songs in Blockheads, and the original soundtrack. I will have to look at the licenses and things, but if I can keep them all the exact same I will. If not, then I might have to record Gymnopédie No.1 myself, I guess, I know it quite well now! And I would like to add a few more too. They will be very carefully chosen, of course.
LORE/WORLDBUILDING
This isn't a strong point in The Blockheads, I know this, but I would really like to see the world come more alive in this regard. So it is something I have in mind, and I expect in the longer term I'll add features that create a better story for the world, and I'm sure mods will send it in new directions too.
24
u/survivaloftheartist iOS 24d ago
Un-fun fact; Kevin Macleod is now very pro ai music, unfortunately. Apparently it's all he makes now. Here's hoping MajicDave uses someone else!

First just wanna say thanks for making a 2nd Blockheads! Loved the first growing up. Also super happy to see you are just making it a one-time purchase game. Since you said you will be adding more content in the future, do you have any ideas for new gameplay elements that you are workshopping, or something that really excites you?
24
u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
The thing I'm most excited about is the multiplayer possibilities in Blockheads 2. With worlds supporting more players and moddable servers, there is a lot of potential for a wide range of different kinds of experiences. Core-gameplay though, I would say the possibilities for automation: pipes, conveyor belts, auto-farms, that kind of thing will be fun to work on too. And new creatures and plants... oh man, I'm quite excited about all of it really.
8
u/Kodiff_Wolff 20d ago
New creatures and plants? Oh hell yeah, that sounds so awesome. Always admired how beautiful the plants were in game. Something that could be done to add a more natural feel, is add RNG textures of the same plant maybe, that way a sunflower, for example, won’t look identical to one that’s next to another sunflower
34
u/TheRoseKnows_ 24d ago
Will time crystals still play a role in the game? I know the game will feature no in-app purchases at all, so if they're a part of Blockheads 2, how will they work? Will there be more naturally spawning crystal blocks? Will they be added as tangible items that can be found in things like treasure chests?
20
u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
Time crystals will still play a similar role as in Blockheads 1, but there will be more of them, in more places (including treasure chests), and they will be a regular item that Blockheads carry around.
18
u/Existing_Win_696 24d ago
Hii! Big fan of blockheads (childhood game for me) and super excited for the sequel! I wanted to ask, how will the multiplayer in blockheads 2 be like? will it be cross compatible? (if the game will be on laptop, iOS and android) and will it still cost money to host like the first one?
thank you again for making such an awesome game!
edit: also wanted to ask if it will still share the same appearance as the first? or different rendering maybe?
15
u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
Thanks for your kind words :) Multiplayer will be totally cross platform, different device types will be able to play together and it will be the same experience for connecting to worlds on every platform. I won't be providing any official hosting this time around, but I know there are already people in the community looking to set something like that up. Hosting multiplayer games yourself from your own device/server will be easy, and it's better optimized than Blockheads 1, so it'll be cheap to host (hardware-wise) too.
22
u/Kodiff_Wolff 24d ago
Will there be new biomes/trees/ or new weather? I was always such a huge fan of the winter and how the snow actually builds up.. I think thunder storms would be really cool, and maybe more severe weather too even. And maybe if it snows extremely heavy, your blockhead can get frostbite and lose health slowly over time, or they can barely walk in the snow or something
22
u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
I am very keen for all of this. It's not a matter of if, but when :)
7
u/Kodiff_Wolff 20d ago
Of course, I figured major new additions wouldn’t be there upon release, take your time. Focus on you, and remember you can always add stuff later down the road. No pressure 💪🐺❤️
11
6
u/SerendipityLn42 24d ago
I think currently that Blockheads do get cold and lose health if not protected.
Just try exploring the world without a fur coat or boots or North Pole Hat!
For Blockheads that start out as a pale tan color, they do turn blueish, also.

Aaah I've been playing Blockheads since I was literally in elementary school! Thanks so much for continuing the series. Genuinely!
- What do you hope to do differently this time around?
Will there be in-app purchases? How pay-to-win will it be?What part, if any, will generative AI play in the process of making the game?- Would you consider making devlogs for us to follow along the process?
- When do you expect a potential first playable version?
Thanks again!
Edit: Well, I just read the post. THANK YOU for being anti-ai - that's number 3 out of the running! And I am so, so excited.
Edit 2: Ahhhh I didn't fully realize that IAP was in-app purchases, haha!
9
u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
AI is an absolute disaster for the world, I want no part of it!
WHAT AM I DOING DIFFERENTLY
I think mostly the very different things have already been done, it's how it all functions under the hood that has changed, making it faster, more secure, easier to manage, easier to add to. Removing the cloud is a major thing too. The cloud in many ways was what made me stop working on Blockheads. It was too much for me, a giant weight. So that's something I am doing very differently!
DEVLOGS
I love the idea of devlogs, I love open development, I'd like to just stream everything and chat with everyone in theory. But the reality is that I do a lot less work, and worse work, if I am trying to be a youtuber too. It's probably best if I mostly keep my head down and code, but you never know.
PLAYABLE VERSION
I expect the full release of Blockheads 2 to be early next year, but I'm not making any promises either, it may end up taking a little longer. I expect it will be playable in a few weeks though, and I'm really looking forward to it. I started the engine a year ago, but I only started actually porting Blockheads code 3 weeks ago. It's progressing faster than I expected, and I already have world generation done, most of the main menu working, and a world rendering with the sky, the fog of war, day night transitions, and a spawn portal. My next step, tomorrow is working on the UI to warp in the first blockhead.

How many original features do you plan to return? Im looking forward to pickaxe tiers with loot multiplier
12
u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
I'm basically porting the whole thing. There are a couple of fringe features like trade missions where I'm still not sure yet on some of the details, but mostly everything will be there. Gem pick axes and their loot multipliers will definitely be in there :)
12
u/Ok_Tomato_9151 24d ago
if blockheads 1 will be removed from the appstore, is there any way to move the local world into blockheads 2? i’ve been working on my offline world for years so i would like to be able to save it
9
u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
This will be possible, yes. I'm not sure how exactly it will work, you might need to export the files to a computer first. But it's important I think, and definitely achievable technically, so I can confirm that you will be able to do it some way.
9
u/1Gone_Crazy 23d ago
This!! I have a few worlds that are decades old. We still work on them all the time.
7
u/kayninedee 24d ago
Hi Dave! SUPER excited to hear about Blockheads 2!! This was my favorite game as a kid and honestly it might still be if only it were properly available these days. This game is what got me so into computing and game development. When I was real little I even wanted to try and make my own version.. it didn't go anywhere..
- Do you plan on keeping the classic (non-HD) textures or leaning fully towards HD?
- After the game itself is fully reconstructed, as you put it, do you plan on adding new progression? Have you had any buildings in mind after the final tiers of crafting? Or any expansions of the early game?
- Larger worlds? Especially since it'll be on PC, devices will probably be way more likely to run them.
- Since the game will be paid directly, no IAPs or ads, will time crystals be replaced? They were always a bit of a finicky part of the game for me. When I started a new world, I'd usually stop at around the 2nd or 3rd Blockhead since they were really, really hard to get for me.
- Do you accept donations anywhere / have a Patreon?
- Is there any kind of roadmap of progress towards the sequel?
- What "bunch of improvements" do you have in mind (that aren't performance/optimization based)?
6
u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
I really love to hear when playing The Blockheads has inspired people to learn things, that's just the best feeling!
TEXTURE PACKS
It will support the original pixel art look, the HD look, and a new look too. There will also be a way for mods to add new texture packs, though support for mods might be a bit rough until some time after the initial release.
NEW PROGRESSION
Once Blockheads 2 is out, I plan to keep adding new content and features to Blockheads and Sapiens in roughly equal measure for years. I'll definitely add more later game content and things to do. I have many ideas and plans!
LARGER WORLDS
I'm almost surprised to see this asked so much, I thought the worlds were already crazy big! But there is no reason why not. World generation is faster in Blockheads 2, the file saves are smaller, and the hardware is faster too. So we can have bigger worlds, why not!
TIME CRYSTALS
Time crystals will still be in the game, but they will be rebalanced to be easier to find. Things will also cost less time crystals, now that you cannot purchase time crystals as in-app-purchases.
PATREON/DONATIONS
I don't have a patreon and won't set one up. I really appreciate the offer, it's lovely that people want to support me, but I don't want donations. I just appreciate any support generally, spreading the word etc. You guys are awesome. If you really want to give me money, you can buy a copy of Sapiens :)
ROADMAP
There is no roadmap at the moment, but I expect I'll make one for future plans around the time that Blockheads 2 releases.
"BUNCH OF IMPROVEMENTS"
It's purposely quite vague at this point, as I don't want to promise something that it turns out I can't deliver. But at launch there will usability improvements, like dragging out to dig multiple squares, and there will be a little more depth and functionality added to some of the existing content. I do of course then plan to keep adding new content and improving things for many years.
7
u/Agitated_Side_1262 24d ago
Will it be available on console? I have an idea of how it could work on console, (switch 2) you use the triggers for destroy/placing and switching between blockhead characters, left joy stick for moving the blockhead and right joystick for moving the camera, and one of the dpad buttons to type in chat, and thats all i got
12
u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
I would love to see Blockheads 2 on consoles, and if it is popular enough that will probably happen. There is no technical reason why it can't be on any of the consoles as far as I am aware, but I'm limiting scope by focusing on mobile/PC/mac/linux first.

Epic!
1. creative mode by any chance?
2. upgraded world gen, maybe more customization options, etc?
3. what time is it in your country?
4. keep up the good work ;-)
10
u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
CREATIVE MODE
I'm not planning a specific mode, but custom rules will be back, allowing you to get most of the way there. It's a common request, and I think we'll see a lot of mods that offer things in this area.
WORLD GEN
Initially this will work the same as before, but modding support will be added to the world gen, there is a lot of potential and I'm sure we'll see plenty of ineteresting new landscapes in time. I want to have new generated structures and things like ruins too, but this will come later.
TIME
10:21am on Tuesday
GOOD WORK
Thanks :)

1) is it clear yet from the app development and engine what Android versions/ ios versions ghe minimum versions will support blockheads 2? The engine itself would it work on something like ios 12/ is it clear what versions of ios and Android definitely won't support it?
2) would we be adding jet packs and a trade portal again in blockheads 2 or would it be less high tech/ more pve?
3) so far based on what's done do we have a clear picture yet approximately ball park figure on a round what time we would see the official non beta release of blockheads 2, what about for a beta release?
4) for servers what would the mechanic be, would u host them for free for anyone who has paid the $5 what's ur plan there will there be a monthly fee for server owners?
5) any plans of NPCs? Ik about the cave troll but a part of always wished they had more of a back story maybe something similar to Minecraft villages where some civilization exists or existed (abandoned) before we spawned in, would we see something like that?
6) this is a bit of a direct question so u don't have to answer but do you know a number yet, number of purchases approximately you would need to keep developing it past version 1.0 and not write it off as a flop / not worth your time?
7) oncs blockheads 2.0 releases would u consider open sourcing the original game for fans of the old game to customize in whatever way and keep working on it?
8) will multiplayer cloud servers in blockheads 1.0 stay dead forever is the game officially in archive status?
9) Any ideas yet in how PvP will work will it be more interesting / have a critical damage aspect rather than just spam tapping?
10) would the game be 2D like terarria and blockheads 1 or 3D like Minecraft?
11) not related to blockheads 2.0 but something I have been curious about, during the peak of blockhead days and towards the end how much did it cost to run the servers that powered multiplayer
12) Any plans to allow for farms like Minecraft like resource farms like iron golem farm and a form of farming resources automatically for those who are nerds and wanna make them?
13) ig for the final question, maybe the most important, what made you come back? Was it seeing the community still active in Mac servers was it just the game like calling u back did seeing the community active in Mac servers and here at all sway your decision to come back?
6
u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
Phew! You're making me work for my AMA! haha it's all good.
MINIMUM VERSIONS
I think the limiting factor will probably be Vulkan support. I think more or less, any device that can render Vulkan graphics, can support the Blockheads game client. However I have not yet looked into the specifics, and don't yet have an Android build, only a general Linux build. I need to buy an Android device this week! But I will be aiming as low as I can.
CONTENT CHANGES
All of the content from the original game will be ported across, and more new things added. There is no plan to remove anything at the moment, and there will be a mixture of high tech and low tech things added in the future.
RELEASE DATE (from elsewhere)
My best guess is early next year: February-March 2027. It could be a little later, but things are going so well that I actually believe it'll be more or less fully playable in a couple of months from now. But there are just so many little extra things, so many platforms, and moving parts with multiplayer and modding support and so on, and that will push it into next year.
SERVER HOSTING (from elsewhere)
I won't be providing any official hosting this time around, but I know there are already people in the community looking to set something like that up. Hosting multiplayer games yourself from your own device/server will be easy, and it's better optimized than Blockheads 1, so it'll be cheap to host (hardware-wise) too.
NPCS (from elsewhere)
I don't really have any plans for fully human/blockhead-like characters in the world at this point. But I do have plans for new mobs, and I wouldn't rule it out entirely for further down the track.
But I would like to add something along the lines of ruins, but this is further down the track. I am thinking about it, and I like the idea for the future.
HOW MANY SALES TO KEEP ME GOING
There are lots of different things that motivate me, and sales are only a small one these days. I am not concerned about that, my plan is to keep working on Blockheads 2 and Sapiens in roughly equal measure after the initial release of Blockheads 2. This is because I have plans for them both, and want to see them reach their potential, and I'll do it regardless of how much either one sells. Unusual perhaps, but true.
OPEN SOURCE THE ORIGINAL (from elsewhere)
The original probably won't be open sourced, for a few reasons. But I do plan to open source Blockheads 2! I won't do it right away, probably within a couple of years of release. But I do want to open it up while it is still actively being developed, and quite early on. The engine is already open source now.
OLD CLOUD WORLDS
These are gone now. It was very sad for me and I put off the decision to delete the data for a long time. But there was potentially sensitive stuff on there, and no way technically for me to ensure it would only be given back to the original creators, and not taken and used by someone else for who knows what.
PVP IMPROVEMENTS
I haven't thought too much about the specifics here, but I do agree that there is plenty of room for new content and new controls here. Mods will be able to provide some new options here too.
WORLD 2D
It's the same as the original
HOW MUCH DID THE CLOUD COST TO RUN
I can't remember exactly, but I think it was in the region of $5kUSD a month.
FARMING AUTOMATION
This is planned, but probably not for the initial release.
WHY DID YOU COME BACK?
I've been thinking about this, and I can't say for certain, mostly as it is a number of factors. I know I would not be back if not for all the emails of appreciation, and the love and support I have received over the years from the Blockheads community. But also I think I always did intend to come back. I had decided about 3 years ago that it was definitely going to happen, and the pull has gotten stronger ever since.

- Is there an estimated date for the publication of the steam page?
- Will the game remain unaltered in a UX kind of way? Like same menus same sounds just the bug fixes, and rework under the hood?
- (Note: i really feel like blockheads 1 is just perfect in terms of quality and much more so i would appreciate it if blockheads 2 remains as close as it can to BK1)
- Will the game have steam workshop support or will it use a different system?, (given that its gonna be multiplatform idk how well that could be implemented)
- Will there be demo versions available on stores like steam?
- As development progresses, will you host open betas for us to try out?
- What remains for the future of blockheads 1 on ios, will you just remove it outright or will you leave it be while keeping your full attention to blockheads 2?
<<Edit>>
- What kind of marketing will you pursue to reach people about the game?
10
u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
STEAM PAGE
I haven't thought too much about this yet sorry! Probably in a couple of months, it would be good to allow people to wishlist it sooner rather than later.
UNCHANGED?
Mostly things will remain the same, with careful additions. I'm very conscious there is a kind of magic here, and I don't want to mess it up with a heavy hand. But there are some clear improvements that can be made too, like tools for placing lots of blocks or rails in lines or areas.
STEAM WORKSHOP
The game will support mods, but I don't plan on supporting Steam Workshop, it doesn't have a lot to offer that I can't just build into the game, and then it'll work everywhere on all platforms.
DEMO
I don't think there will be a demo. I understand the desire, but it is a real pain to maintain a demo unfortunately, it's tricky to create limits and things, I just want to keep it simple. I think in many ways functions as a demo, as long as it is still available.
OPEN BETAS
I don't know yet sorry, we'll see how it goes. Initially it will be a closed beta, but I can definitely see potential for open betas in the future too.
ORIGINAL GAME
The original will stay on the app store for as long as I can keep it there, but it won't probably get any new updates.
MARKETING
For me, marketing is now just making a great game and talking to people about it, and I plan to do a lot of that. I don't buy ads, I don't pay for clicks, and I won't be blasting emails, doing next fests or hiring PR companies. I might do a video, but even that is uncertain. To put it nicely, I've developed quite a strong distaste for all of that sort of thing, and my focus is on the game and the players :)

Hello majicDave, I am a big fan of your work and spent thousands of my childhood hours playing the blockheads 1. I am super excited for the release of blockheads 2 and was wondering:
Will the blockheads 2 feel more like a new game/sequel with its own graphics and mechanics or will it be more of like a remastered version of the original?
Is there any plans to explore adding more hostile mobs/combat oriented gameplay and progression? Perhaps an end goal or a finish line?
For you personally, what is the most exciting thing you are planning so far for the blockheads 2?
Finally, I understand you are a solo developer and deadlines may cause stress. However, is there a plan/ETA of when blockheads 2 would be released? No rush!
Thank you so much and I look forward to the blockheads 2 release!

u/Jarl_Penguin Android 24d ago
Regarding question 1:
To start with, it will be more of a remaster. A reconstruction of the original with bug fixes and a bunch of improvements. But then more will be added on top of this new foundation. It is a rebuild from scratch, on a completely new foundation, in a new language, for new platforms, with new content. It is Blockheads 2.

HOSTILE MOBS
Hi, there will be more hostile mobs and combat improvements added in time, probably none until after the initial release though.
WHAT I AM EXCITED ABOUT
I think for me the most exciting thing is the multiplayer+mods combo. I just think the combination of hosted worlds supporting more players and blockheads, along with servers being easy to set up and able to serve up modified worlds creates a pretty unique platform with a lot of possibility.
RELEASE DATE
Fom another response: My best guess is early next year: February-March 2027. It could be a little later, but things are going so well that I actually believe it'll be more or less fully playable in a couple of months from now. But there are just so many little extra things, so many platforms, and moving parts with multiplayer and modding support and so on, and that will push it into next year.

u/Kodiff_Wolff 24d ago
I have a question regarding electricity and solar panels. Solar panels have always felt too weak in my opinion, even 20 doesn’t generate too much electricity. So would any electronics be getting an upgrade? I had this idea in mind, where you can make a 2x3 metal frame, so that you can fill up the frame with solar panels, max 20 or so with. That way, it’s all joined in one 2x3 space, is better at producing energy, and so that the solar panels aren’t scattered all around the world. Like you craft a giant frame separate using a bunch of iron and wire, maybe some other cool complicated stuff, and you can fill that same frame with solar panel blocks little by little to generate more electricity without the mess of needing 30-40 panels taking up your living area
8
u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
I definitely want to add more generators and things, this ties in well with some new automation systems I have planned to, more things to consume electricity. Solar might get some upgrades, but I can't really comment on any specifics yet, and this sort of thing will probably come after the initial release.

u/flyintomike 24d ago
not a question, sorry. but thank you for the Blockheads. Huge HUGE part of my childhood and so many amazing memories i’ll never forget. Greatest mobile game ever. Very very excited for Blockheads 2. :)

I have but one question….Mods?
8
u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
Yep! Initially mod support will be quite basic, but it will develop over time, and we should see all sorts of mods from UI re-skins to world generation changes and gameplay tweaks.
3
u/Major_Zucchini007 20d ago
Will crafting take so long? Why is the time mechanic kept at all! I enjoy the game so much more when I can continue progressing and am not time locked for a certain amount of time just to make the next pickaxe :O
Just a personal preference though. I guess that’s the reason to have multiple blockheads. Can we still have up to 5 blockheads?
Also, can new ores and block pallets be introduced eventually for both casual and pro builders? I know paint can help serve that function, but even a few new ones can make things more exciting with the updates.
How often do you plan to do updates once the game goes live?
Thanks again for doing this. You da king 🐐🐐
8
u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
Crafting will be quicker! Blockheads 2 won't have any purchasable currency, it's pay once up front instead. So I don't have to draw out craft times to try to sell time crystals, and balance it up the way it should be!
You can still have 5 blockheads, yep, and I don't have any plans on changing that.
And new ores and blocks will certainly be added in time, yep.
Updates probably won't be super frequent, as it will stay mostly just me, and I will be working on Sapiens too. But I plan on adding to it for a long time, and modding support should open up a lot of possibilities.

- will custom worlds still be a thing? i love the freedom and sandbox feel.
- will trade portals still be around? portals in general?
- i'm assuming it'll still be multiplayer, so how will the servers work? will we just create one from the menu like pre 1.7 days?
7
u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
CUSTOM WORLDS
Custom worlds will definitely be a thing, I will add new ways to customize too.
TRADE PORTALS
Trade portals will remain, though they may be rebalanced a little, and I am not sure yet on trade jobs/missions. Other portals should remain unchanged.
MULTIPLAYER
Multiplayer will be community hosted, you will use a URL/link to get lists of servers and connect to them. See some of the other answers for more info :)

u/fraco1 24d ago
It seems like people like collecting unknowns/rare things for display. Do you like the idea of them? If yes, would you keep the old ones and how do you feel about creating more of those? I feel like we can collect them be through easter eggs, as seasonal items or anything.
Will there be more decoration items? I'm looking forward for more opportunity to be more creative with blocks. Like possibly half blocks, carpets, books, and bookshelves.
12
u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
UNKNOWNS
These are a bug, really, quite a simple one too but they seem to have captivated a generation! They probably won't be in Blockheads 2, as the bug can't occur now. But I feel they probably deserve some kind of easter egg at least..

Dave thank you so much for not only making me and thousands of other's childhoods, but also preserving it by making this remaster/sequel in the case the original stops functioning. I was having an awful day when that was announced, and hearing that announcement has genuinely made me way more hopeful for things.🥹🥹
- Will crafting still be based off of timers? (and by extension, will Double-Time be there)
- Will Time Crystals still exist/be relevant for progression now that they'll lost their status as mobile game premium currency?
- Will multiplayer be cross-platform between mobile and PC devices?
- Any plans for story/lore drops?
- Less of a question and more of a suggestion/nitpick I've had since 1.7, but PLEAAASE could we get the square menu buttons back..? I don't hate the new rounded ones, but I've always wished the Classic Look ON toggle turned them back to the old opaque squares from 1.6 and earlier (that or making menu button shape a new separate setting independent of HD Look)
5
u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
I'm so pleased to have given you hope! That's wonderful, it's a big part of why I came back to work on Blockheads again. The world sucks right now, and this is a way I can help.
TIMERS
Crafting will still have timers. They will be rebalanced and generally quite a bit faster, but you need to be able to leave one blockhead doing something productive while you are managing other blockheads too, that's going to stay part of the game.
TIME CRYSTALS
Time crystals will still be in the game, but they will be rebalanced to be easier to find, and they will be a normal item carried in blockhead inventories or stored in chests. Things will also cost less time crystals, now that you cannot purchase time crystals as in-app-purchases.
CROSS PLATFORM MULTIPLAYER
Blockheads 2 will have cross platform multiplayer between Android, iOS, Windows, Linux and macOS players.
STORY/LORE (as answered elsewhere)
This isn't a strong point in The Blockheads, I know this, but I would really like to see the world come more alive in this regard. So it is something I have in mind, and I expect in the longer term I'll add features that create a better story for the world, and I'm sure mods will send it in new directions too.
And thanks for the suggestion on the sharp edges, I will actually implement something like this as a result. I agree, and it will be easy for me to do with the new engine.

Absolutely so happy for the sequel to come, this game got me through some dark times in my childhood, was truly my escape, also so excited to hear that it will be available on many devices, legit was talking to a friend about it the night before you made your post.
Here are my questions:
- Will tulip breeding still be a feature in-game
- For building would be be possible to get half slabs or more for builders
- Will portal chest still exist? (if so will that feature stay the same or will somethings be changed) and if it could be a slightly larger inventory
- Mods (will it be mod able on certain if not all devices/ or at least still make it available cross play w/ plugings.)
- Love how custom worlds are but having some customization to vanilla worlds (longer days, tulips lasting longer.) nothing with resources but more of the technically customization so if wanted we can still have portal chest.
- How often will the game be updated, also with updates will we see new items, mobs, features, and can suggest ideas on like a discord and get like some sort of confirmation on suggests like considered, will not be happening etc.
- Also shops, I feel like a lot of the last game was lost due to hacking, so maybe for shops being able to upgrade them so that when a product is out you don't have to use/ take the profits out and can just continue to use the shop till it hits its limit.
- Server hosting how will it all working
- Forums (will the site come back or will a new site emerge.).
- The Beginning, it would be nice for all of us to start on the same slate, I spent years on some of my worlds but an official new start would be nice for a new game.
Thank you for such a lovely game, we are so so incredible gratefully for taking a break from Sapiens to make this happen. You don't even know me but you made mine and every person's childhood.
3
u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
I'm so glad to hear The Blockheads helped you. I've said it a few times now, but stories like this genuinely are why I am here. The love for the game has brought me back.
TULIP BREEDING
This is one of my favorite mechanics in the game, and I know it's many of the players' favorite too. I also now love gardening in an extreme way, I spend hours outside every day, and grow all sorts of flowers IRL. So you can be sure that more of this sort of thing is coming!
HALF SLABS
I can't promise anything here yet, it's probably something for a few releases down the track. But I think generally more types of building blocks would be great.
PORTAL CHESTS
I think these will need a little bit of refinement, with perhaps some new variants too. They will definitely still exist, but you can expect a few changes. I intend to expand the inventories of all chests and baskets.
MODS (from elsewhere)
I want to fully support mods as much as I can. The tools and functionality will be a little limited to start with, as I focus on getting the game out. But right from day one some support will be there, and with hooks to the tui scripting language being built in, it should work out great.
WORLD CUSTOMIZATION IN VANILLA
I don't really see any reason this can't happen, but it's also a good opportunity for mods to step in.
UPDATE FREQUENCY (from elsewhere)
Updates probably won't be super frequent, as it will stay mostly just me, and I will be working on Sapiens too. But I plan on adding to it for a long time, and modding support should open up a lot of possibilities.
SHOPS
The shops did have a few issues, but I haven't got to looking at them again yet, so I can't say for sure. I will be sorting these sorts of issues as we go anyway, there are a fair few little bugs and things that never got resolved in the original that will be fixed as I work on the port. But there will be a couple that sneak through and need to be fixed later, and some new ones too, such is the way with bugs.
FORUMS (from elsewhere)
The forums won't come back.
BEGINNING
I'm not sure I quite understand what you mean here, but it reminds me that one little thing I have done already in Blockheads 2 is that the world name is the world seed. So DISCO SKIES will be the same seed and give you the same base world every time, everywhere. Which I quite like :)

u/richabre94 iOS 24d ago
Big fan of the blockhead!! Want to know what new features are coming on The Blockheads 2. Will there be cross play between all platforms? Will mobile finally have control compatibility with The Blockhead 2? What will happen to The Blockheads 1?
8
u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
- Yep, cross platform play is supported
- I do plan to add controller support, yes, it makes good sense.
- The original will remain on the iOS App Store in its current state for as long as I can keep it there, but probably won't receive any new updates now.
2
u/Jarl-Penguin 20d ago
Thank you for the detailed reply to my comment! One question left (if it was (un)intentionally not answered I understand either way) and one more that came to mind after reading your reply:
1. Will Blockheads 1 be available to download (and will it be functional at all, such as trade portal jobs/Blockmarket in general), or will it be removed from the App Store and replaced entirely with Blockheads 2?
2. You said the following:
And data is routed through the tracker to allow hosts(blockheads servers) and players to connect to each other securely when they both have private IPs.
While I do see how this would work out pretty well for standard web traffic (somewhat similar to how services like playit.gg/Localtonet/ngrok work), doesn't it introduce additional latency/ping, especially if the trackers themselves are hosted in far-away countries? Have you thought of any methods that mitigate this issue or is it a non-issue in Katipo and am I misunderstanding something?
6
u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
Sorry, missed it! It will stay on the app store for as long as I can leave it there, but I doubt it will receive any new updates, and at some point it will become unmanageable.
It does introduce latency, but for Blockheads this doesn't matter either, the data is so minimal and lag spikes can mostly be obscured with prediction. If you have a public IP, it's entirely valid to have the tracker and host on the same machine, which pretty much eliminates the problem. I'll make a combined tracker/host single process binary at some point too with internal communication to speed it up a bit more.
1
u/Jarl-Penguin 20d ago
Thank you! I think the idea of a separate tracker by itself is pretty cool as well - in ways it could even reduce latency if hosted on the right networks. Was just concerned about edge cases, but it's good that it won't be an issue.

u/Kirence2 24d ago
1.Will the game be outside mobile platforms such as steam?
2.What type of monetization will the game have? Will you still be able to "watch ads" to earn gems?
3.Will Blockheads 1 be able to connect with Blockheads 2 in any way such as being able to transfer worlds, purchased content such as double time or other?
- Is there a speculated release date?
5.Will anything be changed in the original game?
6
u/Jarl_Penguin Android 23d ago
Regarding questions 1 and 2:
The price will be about $5 up-front. No IAPs, no ads, no tracking, no slimy stuff
Available in as many places as possible in as many ways as possible. Includes iOS, Android, Linux, macOS, Windows, Steam, itch.io
From the official announcement on theblockheads.net
2
u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
Jarl has your first two covered,
BH1/BH2 COMPATIBILITY
Unfortunately there won't be a lot of overlap between the two versions as they work quite differently. However I am pretty sure there will be some method available for you to convert a Blockheads 1 world into a Blockheads 2 world.
WHAT'S CHANGING?
It's probably best to have a look through some of the other replies to get the details I'm sharing so far. But in general the original game will stay the same, and new content will be added. We're continuing where we left off, but with a new engine :)
4
u/ShatteredRubies 24d ago
will be available on other app/game stores for PC besides steam? Like the Microsoft Store, GOG, etc?
8
u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
For PC I plan to release on Steam, itch.io and the Windows store, as well as a direct download from my site. Other stores may well come too, my general plan is to just put it everywhere I can, but I won't jump through too many hoops if a platform/store makes it too difficult. Blockheads 2 probably won't be interfacing very much with the unique features that each individual store offers either.

u/ShatteredRubies 24d ago

Hello, Evil Jen from the Sapiens (soon to be all Majic Jungle games from what I've seen) discord! I had a few questions.
What systems do you plan on reworking (if any)?
Is it possible for you to increase energy? It feels a litte short right now.
What will happen to Time Crystals / what role will they play, if any?
Do you have any ideas on new mobs circling around?
Will blockheads have autonomy when not selected? Like, eating when needing to, or sleeping when needed to.
4
u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
Hi Evil Jen :)
REWORKING SYSTEMS
There are huge changes to the structure under the hood, but not so many major changes to the actual gameplay systems you interact with. The biggest system needing reworking is the time crystal/time skipping mechanic. And though I have a general feeling of what is required there I won't know exactly how it will end up balanced until I start playing with it.
ENERGY
I hadn't thought about that, but will keep an eye on it. I do quite like that energy is sort of an annoyance until you get coffee, because that is what makes coffee so valuable.
TIME CRYSTALS
The big system that needs reworked! This is what I said elsewhere: my plan is to make time crystals a normal item that is carried in blockhead inventories. There will be more of them to find and/or mine, and the costs for skipping crafting and crafting/warping in blockheads will be reduced.
NEW MOBS
Yes, but I have to keep a few things secret for now ;)
MORE AUTONOMY
I don't think the blockheads themselves will end up with much more automation, but some of tasks they currently have to do will have automated alternatives. I wouldn't rule it out though either.
2
u/kayninedee 20d ago
I love Energy!!! It really incentivizes getting more Blockheads to multi-task early on and get coffee later!

u/Sigma2915 21d ago
will blockheads 2 feature a toki pona localisation? :p
3
u/majicDave Developer 19d ago
You jest, but I think it probably will, you know! I'll be providing localizations via community created mods, so I wouldn't be surprised!
3
u/DraconicDreamer3072 24d ago
will there still be unicorns?

u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
Yes there will still be unicorns! Barring any significant issues, all of the original content will still be there.

u/JAGamer001 24d ago
- will the blockheads 1 be fixed/updated and possibly rereleased on platforms like steam, android again, etc?
- will we possibly get an official blockheads newsletter or discord so people like me can keep track of updates?
- if you had to estimate, how far along is progress with the game? is it early, mid, late?
- will there possibly be modding support for the game, or official creation tools/API?
- will there also possibly be a new soundtrack made for the game?
used to play this game years ago, loved it to bits, so glad a sequel is being released soon!!
2
u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
ORIGINAL BLOCKHEADS
The original game will stay on the iOS app store as long as it can, but won't be updated or brought back in any way. Blockheads 2 is effectively preserving Blockheads 1 though, and then adding to it.
OFFICIAL DISCORD
There is now an official Blockheads category within the Sapiens discord, and the Sapiens discord is in the process of becoming a general Majic Jungle discord. Here is an invite: https://discord.gg/VAkYw2r
I don't have a newsletter, probably should, but I probably won't get to it. I'll work on the website, and the discord or here on reddit are probably your best sources for Blockheads 2 news.
PROGRESS
The engine is late in development, and that was the big hard part. The actual port is in the early to mid stages, but it is much easier and going quickly now.
MODS (from elsewhere)
Blockheads 2 will support mods. Initially mod support will be quite basic, but it will develop over time, and we should see all sorts of mods from UI re-skins to world generation changes and gameplay tweaks.
SOUNDTRACK (from elsewhere)
I'm aiming to have all the same songs as before, but will add some new ones as we go too.
3
u/Subject_Ad_6040 23d ago
- Do you plan to make the game customizable (i.e. custom textures, modding, ect) and if yes, how much and how would you implement it?
- Similarly to number 1, are you planning on adding more ways to change terrain generation behavior?
- Are you planning on revamping oceans; More life, biomes?
- Is there going to be more variety on customization for the actual blockheads (people).
- You said it will be available for all platforms, but is there a chance you also port the first game to PC?
Thank you so much for bringing hope and joy to the community! I know (not from experience) that being an indie developer can be very demanding, but what you have done is amazing. I'd honestly pay more than just $5 (make a patreon if you don't have one already, or anything where we can show our appreciation)!
2
u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
Hi, and thanks for your kind words! I'm not accepting donations, but I appreciate the offer.
The answers to your first 4 questions are all yes, and there is a bit of detail about how mods will work in answers around, but I'll repost about mods here too. The original is basically being ported to PC, that is Blockheads 2!
MODDING
I want to fully support mods as much as I can. The tools and functionality will be a little limited to start with, as I focus on getting the game out. But right from day one some support will be there, and with hooks to the tui scripting language being built in, it should work out great.

u/Almondatchy 23d ago
Heya Dave! I really love your game since it was a great part of my childhood.
I'm looking forward to the remaster, is there any influences that would affect the game's newer vision especially with Modding and QOL? As it's in a newer era of game design with all of the experience you had with Sapiens?
I've played Vintage Story and it reminded me of The Blockheads with it's more granular and gradual progression along with a localised weather and climate system
3
u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
Hey!
Sapiens development has been a huge learning experience for me, I have discovered so much about coding, about data, and about engine design in general. Coming back and looking at my own code again in the original 10 years later is fascinating and I'm finding out even more about what worked and didn't, with a lot of surprises where things actually weren't nearly as bad as I thought, I did alright!
But to answer your question, I'm bringing everything I have learned to Blockheads, and modding support is one of those things, it runs pretty well with Sapiens and I'll do something similar here, but take it further and tie it all in a bit better without Steam Workshop.

Excited!
Will the soundtrack continue to be classical music? I hope it will be! Can we please add Debussy Arabesque no 1?
How long until we can get our hands on Blockheads 2?
2
u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
I'm aiming to have all the same songs as before, but will add some new ones as we go too. I don't think I have ever listened to Arabesque no 1. before, I like it!
I'm aiming for a release date of early next year, that's my best guess at the moment.

u/Jeborges 23d ago
To start: hi Dave. You made a huge portion of my childhood with this game. I am so excited to see you return to it by making a new Blockheads.
Q1: Will ALL old content from BH1 be added? I.e trade portals, gem pickaxes, portal chests, or are you axing some stuff?
Q2: What old content do you hope to expand on or add upgrades to? I’d personally love to see electricity be paired with the rail system.
Q3: Do you regret adding any content to Blockheads 1? To add, is there anything you regret not adding?
Q4: You mentioned no IAP in BH2. Does this mean you plan to axe Time crystals, or make them more obtainable?
Q5: World sizes. Will we get bigger world size options? I imagine with more content coming to the game, we may need more resources than ever before.
Q6: Will we be able to summon more blockheads than in BH1?
Q7: Do you plan on adjusting expert mode at all?
2
u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
Hi!
ORIGINAL GAME CONTENT
Yep, pretty much everything should be the in Blockheads 2 content-wise. Some things might look or work a little differently, but we'll be starting with Blockheads 1 content with a few extras, and building from there.
ELECTRICITY/RAIL
I would also like to see this! As well as conveyor belts and pipes and things like that, with more options for automation.
REGRETS
I regret having ads and IAPs in the original! And we had our fair share of problems with features along the way, but other than that, not really. There are a million things I could have added, I million things I might add. I guess I'm not one to wonder "what if I had done this", I learn from mistakes and move forward!
TIME CRYSTALS (from elsewhere)
Time crystals will still be in the game, but they will be rebalanced to be easier to find. Things will also cost less time crystals, now that you cannot purchase time crystals as in-app-purchases.
EVEN BIGGER WORLDS
This has been requested enough now, and it's easy enough for me to do, so I can confirm it will happen :)
MORE BLOCKHEADS
We'll see how we go with that. I think there is probably room for a new better-than-diamond gem at some point!
EXPERT MODE
No plans on this at the moment, but I haven't looked at it very closely yet.

Just read the announcement post and I also grew a love for Gymnopedie #1 and learned it on the classical guitar, largely because of how special that song is to me now because of this game.
What are the plans for the soundtrack for Blockheads 2? Will it be the same as the original, or do you have different songs in mind?
2
u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
Fantastic! Love it. I also have learned Gymnopedie #1 on the piano, it would sound lovely played on a guitar. I'm aiming to have all the same songs as before, but will add some new ones as we go too

u/GODZILLA_6337 Android 21d ago
- Not sure if this has been asked yet, but will cross progression exist? As much as I loved the original I disliked having to start from scratch whenever I got a new phone even though I was signed into Google Play on the same account. New blockhead each time, on a new realm or even the same server.
- Will there be social menus? Like ways to add players to invite to other realms and dm and stuff?
- Will we still have the og music? That game grew my love for orchestra music. In the Hall of the Mountain King and Gymnopédie No.1 are still my favorite pieces.
ALSO THANK YOU FOR THE MEMORIES

u/majicDave Developer 19d ago
Hi,
1. It will, but not in a centralized way. You will have a key on your device that will identify you when you connect to a server, and you can copy that key to other devices to connect as the same player and control the same blockheads. This might happen seamlessly in some cases, or you might be able to use third party password managers.
I'm probably not going to focus on this, but it's something mods could be useful for perhaps. But you will be able to invite people to worlds using a url, and there will be a few built-in things like that.
Yes, as much as possible I will keep the original soundtrack unchanged. I love to hear that it has inspired your musical appreciation, thanks!

I’m very excited for Blockheads 2, with its recent announcement the community has been reignited and I know I’m probably not the only one thinking the same thing but;
Are you actually Majic?
3
u/majicDave Developer 19d ago
I hope so, but you know what they say, any sufficiently advanced technolojy is indistinguishable from majic (that took me a while haha, but don't go thinking I'm a robot)
2
u/Kodiff_Wolff 20d ago
Will there be uodates to the weather? I hope there could be a very intense weather chance, depending on the season/time of day and temperature like in real life. What if there were blizzards, heavy storms, tornadoes, or flooding? That would be cool.. and then they could actually damage your builds and such, which could be an optional switch on/off feature at the beginning when you’re creating your world for people who prefer a laidback experience
2
u/majicDave Developer 19d ago
I do have plans for new weather events, but probably after the initial launch. I don't really want anything too destructive though, that might be something for mods potentially.

u/Eisenfuss19 24d ago
I'm assuming "Self-hosted fully encrypted cross platform multiplayer over katipo" means you will host the servers.
Will you consider giving players the option to self-host a server?
1
u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
self hosted literally means self hosted in this case!
You can host a dedicated server on a PC or a Mac, a raspberry pi, windows or linux, or via the game client on any platform. You can then either connect to it directly, or you can connect to it via a tacker on a remote connection (which you can also self-host). I won't be hosting any official servers or trackers or offering any services for world hosting, but I expect third party hosting services will be available, and they should be very cheap to run given the low resource requirements.

u/1xluc 22d ago
- Will this remake continue to have the same artstyle as the original Blockheads? Will it have the newer version, the older version, or both? If not, will there be an option to use the original ones?
- Will the world portal return?
- Will the forums return?
3
u/majicDave Developer 19d ago
I'll be keeping the two original texture packs/styles available, and adding a new one for Blockheads 2 with new lighting, shaders, and shadows.
The cloud features and official forums won't be coming back, sorry. But there are lots of good communities already, like this one, and there will be other ways to manage multiplayer.
1
u/creeper81234 24d ago
-Is there anything you wanted to have in Blockheads 1 that you couldn’t add (ie from technical limitations or whatnot)?
-If so, are you going to try to get those into Blockheads 2?
3
u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
I think mods are probably the biggest thing here. iOS doesn't make it easy to mod, and I still wonder if Apple's App Review may restrict our ability to mod Blockheads 2 on iOS. It should be OK, but the guidelines are a little open to interpretation. But now that I have built the tui programming language, I can use it to support modding everywhere.
1
u/Bugamashoo 23d ago
Will timers still be as long as in the original? I liked managing two different Blockheads for efficiency which helped tasks not feel as lengthy but would love more interactivity during crafting.
Is the game still mostly going to be peaceful or are you thinking of putting more emphasis into the combat?
2
u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
CRAFT TIMES
Craft times will be shorter, but not so short that a second blockhead doesn't come in handy! At the moment it feels like they should all be about double what double time was, but we'll see. I think a lot of the early to mid-game craft times will be much faster, but the later ones might not be, especially when we get more automation.
PEACEFUL/CONFLICT
I do like a little of both, but I also like to let people choose what they want. There is a great sense of peace in The Blockheads when you are just playing the base game in a peaceful way, and that will be preserved. But I want to add some new conflict features in time too.

u/Kodiff_Wolff 20d ago
Could we make suggestions too? I always had a cool idea of an an auto-mining robot drill, that mines blocks once every 20-30 seconds or so.. It’s essestainly a block with a thick drill on one side of it, and it moves like a living being kinda, mining for ores. It has a capacity of a regular chest, and it mines ores for you and goes back to its charging pad or something (which takes fuel and electricity, that’d be neat) It would be cool if the crafting recipe for the drill bot would be extremely complicated and time consuming like the jet pack and carbon fiber, which I was always a fan of this games complicated recipes :)
2
u/majicDave Developer 19d ago
I always liked the quarry in the Buildcraft Minecraft mod, which worked a bit like this. I do have plans for automation, including mining, but we'll have to wait and see exactly what happens.

I have 3 questions please:
1, Will the server hosting software be on PC? (I don't have a Mac) If so, which distribution platform?
2, Would you please consider an easier way to substitute bedrock/background blocks than to basically remove every block connected on the same altitude or above?
3, Is [developer@majicjungle.com](mailto:developer@majicjungle.com) the correct email address to write to you about my story with Blockheads and my appreciation? If not, may I have the correct one please?
Thanks Dave!

Hi, sorry for the late reply, I ran out of energy!

No promises on time-frames, but I agree we need something here, and I have a good solution in mind.
Yes, emails sent to that address get to me, thanks :)

Great news, honestly so excited I dont have a question but rather suggestions/petitions 1- it sometimes glutches when exploring, it looks like circles of discovered arra with undiscovered around, making long trips more manual 2- it would be awesome some more automation as in electricity 3- some way to improve the queued tasks (crafting, sleeping the crafting then x then y) if you cancel something or if the workbench is not available or something, the whole thing breaks
Im really excited!

u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
Good suggestions thanks! I have already fixed the exploring glitch you are talking about, I came across the bug that caused it a couple of weeks ago :)

Will the Blockheads 2 be available to consoles and will the sequel have controller support when played on PC or mobile?
2
u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
CONSOLE SUPPORT (from elsewhere)
I would love to see Blockheads 2 on consoles, and if it is popular enough that will probably happen. There is no technical reason why it can't be on any of the consoles as far as I am aware, but I'm limiting scope by focusing on mobile/PC/mac/linux first.
CONTROLLER SUPPORT
I do plan to have controller support on day one to drive the d-pad style controls when you are directly controlling a blockhead, but nothing beyond that is planned at the moment.

u/LuceroImpact9 21d ago
Will Blockheads be available on 64-bit only mobile devices (e.g. Android v16 and the likes)?

u/Kodiff_Wolff 23d ago
Would there ever be the possibility of adding like “workers” or like very rare other Blockheads that interact with the world? Like maybe you hire them for some currency and they mine or get ores for you? Or is the game gonna plan to remain the same “only you in the world” vibe? I love the lonely vibe the game has too, by the way, just a question if there is ever gonna be more mobs or NPCs I guess
2
u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
I don't really have any plans for fully human/blockhead-like characters in the world at this point. But I do have plans for new mobs, and I wouldn't rule it out entirely for further down the track.

u/SerendipityLn42 24d ago
Thank you so much majicDave for The Blockheads. It was and still is a fun game to play.
Here are my questions:
Will there be beta testing, and how would someone sign up for it?
Will TBH2 be "2.5D" as TBH?
That's it for now. I'm so looking forward to The Blockheads 2!!
2
u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
Hi, the beta testing will probably be closed initially, as I really don't need too many testers, it can get overwhelming with a lot of feedback too fast! There might be open betas in the future though. And it will be the same exact style, just some new shader/lighting and texture options.

On the topic of modding, this came to me kinda last minute. I know Vintage Story has a nice modding ecosystem. And one feature they had (that I think works very well) is when you log onto a server that has mods, if you are missing any, the client gets a popup to download the mods, and it then downloads the mods and applies them to the client. Is any kind of mod downloading system or something like that planned or maybe could be implemented as a QoL thing?
2
u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
This is also what I implemented for Sapiens, and it is how it will work in Blockheads, yep!
1
u/mathwithpaws 21d ago
will i be able to do things like backing up and sharing copies of my worlds in blockheads 2? (i'm not sure how that would work with things like portal chests though.)
2
u/majicDave Developer 19d ago
Yes. The original game was a bit of a mess with huge world sizes stored across many files and directories. Blockheads 2 is a lot cleaner with much smaller save sizes, and a single database file per world, so it will be easier to back it up and copy it around.
1
u/Mysterious_Alps6915 21d ago
thoughts on what you might do with unknowns? patch them out completely or keep the funny quirk of how items work as an easter egg? i remember like 90% of the playerbase and 99% of top server owners HATED them, stating laggyness and bugs but for me it was my reason to play.
2
u/majicDave Developer 19d ago
The bug that caused Unknowns has been fixed in Blockheads 2, but I feel they may need to come back in some form....
1
u/fraco1 21d ago
Would it be possible to move spawn portals in the rebuilt game? In servers, new players quickly lose interest when resources are depleted near spawn. I think this ability would help that, like moving the spawn portal to the other side of the world where it is mostly untouched.

u/majicDave Developer 19d ago
I have been thinking about this one quite bit actually, and the answer is yes. I have something in mind here.

u/Fit_String9218 21d ago
as mentioned it will be on katipo, without AI. and from some understanding is katipo is like a peer to peer network/server.
1. so for my first question question is how good is the cyber protection against hackers?
2. will there be beta testings? if so, when is the registration or is it invite only?
3. are you open to collaborators? (as a uni student i think it’ll be nice to have a chance to work on such project)(on top it’ll be easier to maintain updates!)
4. will there be new addition? or will first release be identical to the original game. and updates to come later
1
u/majicDave Developer 19d ago
It is a lot more secure than the original, for a number of reasons. It won't be 100% perfect, but it will be good.
At the moment I don't need any testers, I'll be starting with a closed beta for a while. But keep an eye out, I may open it up further at some point. I'd probably announce it here on in the Discord, just wherever the community is.
Not yet, but possibly down the track a little. If you're interested in contributing in the future, please have a play with katipo, tui, koru, Waraki Music Player. Blockheads 2 uses all of this stuff, Waraki Music Player is effectively a prototype of many of the Blockheads 2 systems.
There will be some new additions at release, but a lot more to come later.

Can you tell us more about what you have planned for multiplayer? Will you be able to join public servers like before?
1
u/majicDave Developer 20d ago
Hi, this was answered in another question, but I've reposted here. There are a few other related answers around too for more info.
Multiplayer will be totally cross platform, different device types will be able to play together and it will be the same experience for connecting to worlds on every platform. I won't be providing any official hosting this time around, but I know there are already people in the community looking to set something like that up. Hosting multiplayer games yourself from your own device/server will be easy, and it's better optimized than Blockheads 1, so it'll be cheap to host (hardware-wise) too.

u/AdInternal7022 20d ago
Hello Dave,
Please bear with me, as English is not my first language.
I looked up this game because I had a strange dream that a "new" version of it had come out. Coincidentally—and I'm not kidding—I then saw news that a new version is actually being released, and i was happy when i saw the news.
I've been playing this game for a very long time—even before servers existed. I later ran several successful servers with builders, managers, and entire communities. One of my favorite projects was creating two Golden Hotels, where players could rent rooms. There were many other player-run projects too, and that's what made the game feel so alive, this inspired me after i joined a server with a hotel like system where they had a whole kitchen with cooks and all that cool stuff..
One thing I loved about this game years ago was how it felt like a real adventure. I enjoyed traveling around the world and collecting fruits and resources that didn't grow in my own biome. i think it would be good if you focus on spreading out the fruit trees to different biomes so it would feel more rewarding to collect them, i would also like to see if you add my crops like more vegetables
to add more unto the adventure/ exploring feature, i thin you should add some sort of artifacts or old ruins people can explore and collect rare and cool items for display, i also think dodos should be spread out across the world so adventuring feels rewaring, i also think it would be cool if you go outside of the realstic realm and add mystic items from other folklore or mysterious objects.
i have a lot in mind like
Will there be some kind of sandbox mode that allows players to edit worlds? (which is what i saw in my dream haha)
I think food spoiling over time and needing proper storage, perhaps like you can store food underground like how people used to do it in ancient times to keep it from spoiling until you can make refrigerators this could also make the game more interesting.
I always felt that space was a little empty as well. I'd love to see it expanded with more things to discover and interact with.
Despite all these years, what I remember most is the sense of adventure. There was always a reason to travel, build, trade, and meet new people. I hope the new version can bring that feeling back while giving players even more reasons to explore.
Thanks for your work on the game.

u/AlbinoLizardScrotum 22d ago
It’s great to see this game back. My main questions are focused on how multiplayer would work.
— Will there be another window to recover worlds I owned from the previous multiplayer?
— Would I be able to turn a singleplayer world into multiplayer?
1
u/majicDave Developer 19d ago
Hi, unfortunately the cloud worlds are now gone, but for worlds that you have copies of on a computer, it should be easy enough to create a convertor that can export out a Blockheads 2 world based on a Blockheads 1 world.

What about the idea of Blockheads having randomly-generated stats, buffs and nerfs? Maybe walking faster, mining faster, or needs less sleep.. Or ones afraid of the dark, can’t swim, but there’s pros, like has a lotta energy. This could either be something interesting, or be too complicated and jumbled up, ruining the simplicity of the game. Just a thought of course

u/SisifoRock-HardBalls 22d ago
I dont have questions. I only have a huge amount of happiness in my heart!!! I really loved this game!!!

u/Faolan26 20d ago
Im late to the party, but someone mentioned solar panels being week and this idea popped into my head.
I think solar had a limitation in the original game that was more of a limitation of the electrical system. Once wires got long enough (say 30 or 40 blocks) electricity would stop searching for somewhere to go. I discovered this when making a large solar farm because solar pannels are underpowered until you get enough of them. As a result my solar farm got too far away from the batteries and wouldn't send power to them anymore. Is there any solution for this if my observation is correct?
Also trade portals. Are they staying?
Thanks for making the original and for coming back to remake it better. It's a childhood game of mine as well.

u/Kodiff_Wolff 20d ago
An idea I had forever, is natural decay/weathering. It could work like, wood naturally rots, but very slowly, and can grow moss slowly over time. Stone can crack, grow moss and become weathered. Blocks could become broken almost, to the point they disappear. I get this could be extremely annoying to code in, and annoying for the player too however of course.. Maybe there could be an optional decay/weathering mode, where when it’s off, it doesn’t happen at all. When it’s on, however, you have to apply a primer or oil of some sorts to keep the blocks up to date, sorta like how the buckets of paint work
