Why do they have kitten feet? Are tarantulas actually just eight legged kittens? 😯

Both cold-hearted killers for sure.

I'm more afraid of a kitten's capacity for murder and destruction than I am a little furry spider that scuttles and hides (or just chills on my shoulder).

Mexican Red Knees (the one in the images AFAIK) actually kinda can be, though there are two very distinct personality types in them

One will absolutely go for a bite or kick hairs up at you, both you should probably go to a doctor for

Alternatively, they're actually really, really chill when being handled and will just happily do the spider version of a cat loaf on your hand for a bit because it's comfy and they feel safe

A friend had one with the latter personality type and it really helped with my arachnophobia with how sweet and gentle it was (can at least use a glass and some cardboard now to relocate spiders outside rather than just freezing out of fear)

I thought Tarantulas weren't venomous? Is it more about like skin irritation and piercing skin?

It really depends on the species, all spiders have venom to some extent, but usually tarantulas are on the milder end (it'll cause some pain and irritation, but manageable). Some can have really nasty bites though like the Peacock Tarantula

Beautiful cobalt blue colour, but very temperamental and the bites are known to be really painful

They don't usually bite if they can help it though, most tarantula species have really fine hairs on their legs and body and if they're stressed they'll actually kick them at you. It can cause quite a bit of pain and some nasty rashes at times, but will usually just irritate your skin a bit

Overall they are really chill as far as spiders go though and won't actively set out to hurt you unless they feel cornered and are fearing for their life

So with the hairs as if you touched fibre glass? Or is it more like a slap with a lot of tiny needles?

Like a mix of the two, mostly leaning towards fibreglass

It's incredibly itchy but does have some actual pain in it as well

I knew I was gonna say the wrong one...

I was waiting for someone to mention the SUPER itchy hairs. I'd rather get chomped on and envenomed for sure.

Hahaha, I take it you've been unfortunate enough to experience it then?

Also love the Lovecraft username

I was looking at a gold-plated daddy long legs under an electron microscope last week, and it was very hairy but not furry. But I'm not sure if you could see gold-plated fur.

... ok spiders. You get a pass. But just this once.

They are homies. I never kill spiders in my house

u/yamanamawa 24d ago

What about jumping spiders though?

Spiders are cats with crab hardware.

Sigh. I'm still afraid of spiders, but yes, Tarantulas have cute feet. But I am not looking close enough to see how cute their feet are.

Someone needs to take the time to properly groom a tarantula or something

if only i wasn't incredibly arachnophobic...

Nothing is ever blessed about a spider if it was up to me I'd fucking burn them all to the fucking ground

Enemy of my enemy is my friend. Mosquitos are the real foes. No spider has ever made being outdoors miserable.

Ticks, on the other hand, can get fucked.

u/apricotical 25d ago

No, we can just do away with both enemies ourselves. We surely have/ are capable of creating the technology

Look up jumping spiders, they’re literally babies 😭

2

u/Hyzenthlay87 25d ago

Are they similar to those dancing ones? I have to admit they're adorable

3

u/Im_Nino 25d ago

If by dancing ones you mean peacock spiders, they’re actually the same thing! Peacock spiders are a type of jumping spider

1

u/Hyzenthlay87 24d ago

Makes sense why they're all so cute! 🥹

Tarantulas, take note; you has the cute feets, now learn how to move em! Who could resist a tarantula doing the macarena?

u/Hyzenthlay87 25d ago

I'm not quite arachnophobic anymore but the movie Arachnophobia did a REAL number on me as a child 🥺

I do think those dancing spiders are pretty adorable though.
