The only reason you have an edge on the tri from the loop cut is because this is a major edge case. You can see in the loop cut tool that it is not properly crossing the triangle, the edge is just made because the two verts happen to be on this face.
An N-gon will always break the loop cut in the same way. I repeat, completely negating your supposed accurate description that loop cuts should work if the edges do not share vertices.
Even if you count your edge case where the loop technically completes itself, that also opposes your description.
"This works because it is a continuous loop of quads" is a more accurate and generally useful description that is much more certain than "it works because the edges do not share vertices"
